Agreed - I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch Lancashire United. The idea is ludicrous. I am sure the fans of Preston, Blackpool and Burnley would think the same. The day they create Lancashire United (although, of course, it will never happen) is the day I quit football.

err scuse me but should you two be even allowed an opinion (rather than a nostagia / homesick fuelled rant on Rovers dwindling support and finances)? I will of course apologise if you are both still season ticket holders and still chucking money into the coffers.
Anyway who thought up the name Lancashire Utd? Sounds like a bus company?
FLB the fact (and prob the circumstances) that you are in China suggests to me that the world is changing faster than you yourself can comprehend. The Market forces that sent you there are still at work here you know. It's sink or swim time for everyone in business.
Of course I'm allowed an opinion...even if you seem to have more than enough opinions for us both.
No, I'm not a season ticket holder at present as (lazy I know) the travel back and forth from China to each game is a wee bit much. Rovers do benefit through my money for merchandise, shirts etc and when I come back in the new year for a bit I'll be going to some games so yes I'm still chucking some "money into the coffers", albeit not as much as a season ticket holder. Even if I wasn't though, I'm still entitled to my opinion and you're entitled to disagree with it.
As for the market forces...I'm not disagreeing. The question was whether you would support a combined Lancashire team. Well...I wouldn't. Blackburn Rovers are my team and even if they're playing fourth tier football I will still support them. Winning isn't everything you know...
-
In other words...Lancashire United. Would you support this team? Certainly I wouldn't, I'd rather support the new Blackburn Rovers AFC (or whatever) that would be set up in its place.
As for..."people on here are inevitably coming around to my way of thinking"...
. What gonna have on your tombstone? The Words "see...I told you so."

"There's a lot riding on the Newcastle game because Graeme Souness is coming back, Alan Shearer is also coming back to Ewood Park and you've got Michael Owen as well," said Savage.
"But there's also the Craig Bellamy factor and I'm sure he will want to prove that Souness was wrong to get rid of him."

Once saw Shay Given up Cav (Peppermint Place it was then i think) trying it on with a girl before getting told where to go and then trying it on with another girl all of five seconds later before receiving the same response.
Tony Parkes came to our school (St James' CE near St Mary's College) to hand out some football awards. Unfortunately he was about half an hour late and so missed the assembly. Instead the football team were dragged out of their lessons but at least he talked to us for a while afterwards. This was about spring 1988 so we talked about whether Rovers would finally go up that season or not. They of course didn't.
Mark Atkins was once spotted by my good self outside Blakey's bar/restaurant next to King George's Hall in a worse state for wear. Sat on the steps with his head in his hands looking p1ssed out of his face. It was the summer of 1995 though so he had a right to be.
David Mail and Chris Sulley gave out some football awards to local teams. Both were very nice and David had an incredibly bushy perm, as was his trademark. Didn't mind posing for pics with the dozens of kids there and were very patient. They weren't my favourite players at the time but after then I forgave any stray passes much more easily.
Favourite player as a kid was Scott Sellars who really should have been playing at a higher level, as he did when starring in the free-scoring Keegan inspired Newcastle. Cruelly injured (with David Thompson and Matt Jansenesque bad luck) when called up to the England squad. Didn't forget the Rovers though as I saw him outside Cardiff after our Worthy Cup win in a long trenchcoat. Admittedly only said 'Hello' to him but it was nice that he still had a soft spot for the club after all these years.
Seen David Dunn out drinking as well. Loads of times. Sometimes with Martin Taylor. Big lad that one.
Finally...a friend of mine once went to the toilet in Utopia to relieve himself. Upon looking up from the urinal who did he see using the urinal facilities next to him but Damien Duff. Now...that's a close encounter if ever there was one!

On another part of the Sky Sports website Martin Tyler has researched the question and he came up with just the three. Kirkland was only 6million.

Let's face it us English have never forgiven the Yanks for throwing our tea in the Ocean and then having that bunch of ragamuffins royally kick our collective arses.
Don't be silly...the majority of English don't give a damn about what happened over two centuries ago. Most now are appalled at the disaster and there are plenty of people giving money to the relief effort. Don't let a few American-bashers using a human tragedy as an excuse to score a political point sour your view of most people. Most on here are horrified at the tragedy.
Besides, even during the American Revolution there was substantial support for the cause of the Americans among the working classes of Britain. 'No tax without representation'? Good for them...don't bloody blame them for throwing the tea into Boston harbour.

- unlike us Europeans, Americans don't know how to be imperialists. The military victories in Afghanistan and Iraq were awesome but all the American hang-ups about the War of Independence seem to render them clueless about what to do when they are in charge of someone else's country.
That's not fair though is it? The reason they may seem "clueless" is because they are, albeit in an at times hamfisted and clumsy way, attemptiong to set up these countries as self-governing democracies. Some bastions of the free world, such as West Germany and Japan, were rebuilt after the Second World War with American aid. The USA is an aggressive force on many occasions but they have been a force for good as well. Some anti-Americans won't admit this and it merely serves to leave their arguments seeming biased and one-eyed. Sure, they want to preserve their trading rights in Iraq and Afghanistan but then again that is the kind of thing on which the British Empire was built, particularly in the realm of the unnoffical British empire, covering the likes of Argentina, Chile and Egypt. I'm no particular fan of US foreign policy but I'm sure they believe they will genuinely leave the countries in a better state than they left it. What was so great about life under the Taliban and Saddam?
As for the Americans not knowing how to be imperialists, maybe they should look into their past...courtesy of wikipedia...
Former American colonial possessions
The following areas have at one time or another been under the control of the United States of America and have not been fully incorporated into the country as states.
American Samoa (1900-)
Cuba (1899-1902)
(now independent; however, Guantanamo Bay remains under the control of the U.S. military)
Dominican Republic ( occupied 1916-1924) (now independent)
Guam (1898-)
Haiti ( occupied 1915-1934)
Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (1944-1990)
(now comprising the independent states of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; as well as one US commonwealth — the Northern Mariana Islands)
Panama Canal Zone (1903-1979) (now part of Panama)
Philippines (1898-1946) (now independent)
Puerto Rico (1898-1952) (now a US commonwealth)
U.S. Virgin Islands (1917-)
Seems Americans do know how to be imperialists after all, at least to anyone who brushes up on their history. To their credit, they are not attempting to be so now in that way.

Hurricane Katrina victims in Houston, Texas, were "underprivileged anyway" and life in the Astrodome sports arena is "working very well for them," former first lady Barbara Bush said..
"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said.
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this - this is working very well for them."
(snip)
She may as well have said "Let them eat cake"
You know...when I was reading that I thought exactly the same thing!
Some people just don't have a clue like Mrs Bush.
As for the looters...they may well have just lost their homes and all their belongings. Not trying to defend the looting but come on, let's not condemn them for nicking a box of trainers while their city is under a few foot of stagnant water. Big deal, there has just been a hurricane for crying out loud. Poor buggers need all the help they can get.

Fair enough. I'm not saying he was crap, as the figures show. But weren't at least 25 of those 44 goals scored in our brief sojourn to the lower reaches? How many of the remaining 20 goals were scored against good teams? Despite the many thrilling touches and turns which I too enjoyed at the time, I can't recall a single instance of him doing it against the big teams. To put him ahead of Sutton and Gallacher is ridiculous. Great goal against first div Notlob when we were three up, but can't be compared with Kevin Gallachers dribble and chip over Schmeichel at OT or the first time volley over Seaman at the Library.
Great players rise to the heights in the big games. 20 top flight goals against lower/mid table teams doesn't qualify for legend status in my books. Very good, but not great.
Judging him against the best teams is fair enough but that can't be done by just posting some career stats on a website. If you wish to judge his influence solely on the black and white of goals scored you can do but it is myopic to do so
.
Jansen had great touch, was wonderful at shielding the ball as well as holding it up for teammates and had a brilliant vision with an ability to spot others, certainly he developed into a player who could weigh up his options. This was real progression from what he was like when he first arrived at Ewood under Brian Kidd. Forgetting the goals, his movement alone created a myriad of chances for the team, not just himself. You say "Despite the many thrilling touches and turns which I too enjoyed at the time, I can't recall a single instance of him doing it against the big teams. " Well...I can. Before Cole's arrival the club had been in a shockingly poor patch of form. After starting the season well, culminating in the 7-1 tonking of a star-studded West Ham we just had a bad patch which was hindered furthermore by our participation in two cups. Cole's arrival led to Jansen finding a level of play (and yes, consistency) which suggested we were seeing the real deal.
The motorcycle crash has led to Rovers fans idealising his form perhaps a bit too much, yet even if it is built up slightly too much...Jansen was still great in the Premiership nonetheless. If Tord Grip hadn't convinced Sven to change his mind at the last minute and take Martin Keown (tournament playing time - 0 minutes) to the World Cup then...well, who knows...
Whatever, Jansen either needs perserving with by Hughes or offloading. There is no point in any half measures anymore. Either he gets a sustained run or forget it. There have been too many false dawns.

Some random thoughts and questions after only seeing part of the game -
Is this new signing Zurab a good addition or is it the Nelsen effect? Everyone seems to improve with him around. Would Mokoena benefit by his presence if moved back into central defence?
Lucas Neill - where has he gone? Hopefully will continue his good form and this is a season of him being back to his best. Looks assured.
Craig Bellamy - How many chances is he going to get in a 4-5-1? Will his return mean a shift to 4-4-2? If so...a Big Man/Little Man double act with Kuqi would make sense. Is Kuqi good enough? Certainly he's big enough but does he have enough quality?
Football - Really boring at the moment. I'm quickly coming over to the view that football really will die on it's arse unless entertainment improves. Chelsea as champions don't set a good bencmark. At least Arsenal and Man Utd were good, attacking champions even if they were good to hate. Chelsea though have so much talent yet are happy with a dull 1-0 win. Hopefully this is just a phase and more attacking and exciting games will be seen.

Is there any news on how he played? Any reports you have heard?
So....we have...
Matt Derbyshire (Plymouth Argyle)
Jonathon Douglas (Leeds United)
Paul Gallagher (Stoke City)
Luke Jones (Cercle Brugge)
Jay McEveley (Ipswich Town)
Is that the lot out on loan?
Should be some more playing time for them on wednesday when there is...
Hull City v Stoke City
Ipswich Town v Southampton
Plymouth Argyle v Crewe Alexandra
Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United
The Yorkshire derby in particular should be an interesting game.
Cercle Brugge, bottom of the Belgian league after five games with just the one point, play second-placed Standard Liege at home next Saturday. Cercle Brugge page on the UEFA website is here.

Well...Mark Hughes is certainly happy enough that Savage is no longer in the plans of Wales boss John Toshack.
Hughes : "The fact that he is no longer playing international football is something that can only help Robbie. I think he is now clear in his own mind that part of his career is over and it is time to move on. He will now be able to benefit from the breaks he will get and I think he will reap the benefits as a player - and that's good news for Blackburn."
-
It seems that the players we have sent out on loan to get some first team action have been getting just that this weekend...with mixed results for their teams.
On a high note...Jonathon Douglas scored in injury-time for Leeds aginst Brighton & Hove Albion to snatch a point as they game ended 3-3. Dougals had come on as a substitute in the 57th minute and must have impressed as he was given an 8 out of 10 by The Sunday Times. It seems David Healy had a shot thaat was saved (unlike against England last wedenesday) and Douglas slotted in the rebound.
James McEveley ended up on the losing side as Ipswich went down 2-0 at Sheffield United but played the full ninety minutes. The report from The Sunday Times suggests that he was much more comfortable in the centre than as a full back. To quote -
"Paul Ifill gave James McEveley an uncomfortable opening to his debut on the opposite wing. McEveley, on a season’s loan from Blackburn, took up a more central position later in the game and gave as good a defensive display as any of the Ipswich players. "
Paul Gallagher scored for Scotland Under-21s against Norway during the week and is on loan at Stoke. For some reason here on the official site he doesn't appear to have been given a profile, does that mean that he wasn't given a squad number before he left on loan???Gallagher came on as a sub with half an hour still to go against Watford but could do nothing much to prevent a crushing 3-0 home defeat. In the match reports there is barely a mention of him so it may have been a rather quiet day at the office for the lad from Shad.
Matt Derbyshire has been causing some news at Plymouth with a hat trick on his debut for their reserves but yesterday it wasn't enough for a starting place the first team lost 2-0 to Norwich, the first win in the league this season for the Canaries. Matty was brought on in the 74th minute however as a substitute and almost took his chance according the official Plymouth website. "Scott introduced Derbyshire in the 74th minute and the youngster almost scored within seconds of his arrival, Green grateful to turn his speculative rising long-range shot around the post."
As I don't remember Derbyshire ever having played for the Rovers first team was this actually his senior professional debut?
I was going to post this in the Outgoing Players thread but it's a bit bloated to say the least so maybe we can use this to keep track of how our players are doing on loan? Gone but not forgotten by Hughes I hope, especially as they are all still young.

Ehiogu played for England and even scored a header once I seem to remember.
So it must be players who haven't played at all for England, either before or after the fee. Which means those three mentioned...didn't Kirkland have some clauses in the contract to be paid? Maybe those were triggered?

The only way the authorities are going to change their meddling is if the fans hit them in the pocket. A few thousand and some clubs not renewing their season tickets is nothing compared to the millions generated by Sky money. Football is big business and it's hard to see how it can ever return to being a 3.00pm on a saturday afternoon with entrance for a few quid affair. Not at the level we currently compete at anyway. The Premiership is where people want to be, yet not only do the club have to spend more money to be there, the fans do too.
Alan75 - Excellent post. Unfortunately...that's life now in football. I'm not sure why so many people spend so much money on following the game but, for now, they do.
-
So...the general consensus is that Savage can be a bit of a tit but he's our tit...so he's an alright tit rather than just a right tit?
To be fair to Sav...Toshack is another who can start a fight in an empty room and has a history of falling out with people in a public manner. Like Bellamy and Souness, a Savage and Toshack working relationship without fireworks was never likely to happen.

Francis Jeffers; wasn't capped until he moved to Arsenal for 10million.
Seth Johnson played for England when he was at Derby, so he isn't one of them.
Jeffers
Davies
Richards
Don't know the other one...

This Wez guy seems to be being treated a bit harshly on here. Even if he was in a group chanting he still doesn't deserve a brick in his face. If there is any cowardly action that took place it was that act by the Villa fan, secure in the knowledge that they were some distance away and protected by being in a large group of Villa fans.
Not too sure why everyone should be expected to sing at a football match though. Sometimes I've felt like singing and sometimes I've been at matches and not wanted to. Every fan should be allowed to behave as they wish as long as it doesn't ruin the enjoyment for others, whether that means singing or not.

However, they didn't have the history and tradition of Blackburn Rovers. A merger could work but only if it could retain enough of the original fans. Preston and Burnley don't like us too much and it's unlikely many of their fans would support a combined side. Shaddy mentioned playing at different stadiums; this is impractical. A club side needs a home which would mean either using one of the existing stadiums (which would have to be Ewood as it is the biggest and most modern in facilities). Why would a Burnley fan or a Preston fan travel to see a team which plays in Blackburn at the detested home of their rivals?
Fair play to thenodrog for making the suggestion but is it feasible? Really, I don't see how.
