Haha, what a load of rubbish.  If a poster says he's going to meet the CEO of the club it's quite natural people are going to want to know what was discussed, especially considering the general lack of trust and confidence towards the boardroom.  You do know this is a message board for people that support BRFC don't you?  We're likely to be interested.

Chaddy has come back as many would have predicted, with a glowing reference for Waggott, no information of any substance other than confirming bits of the pitch have been stitched and season ticket sales are a secret,  and a closed door approach of 'I won't be answering any questions on the matter'.

And so what? If you’ve got burning questions for Steve Waggot you’d be better placed to take some initiative and ask them, rather than pouring scorn on someone who has the initiative to set up their own meeting. Much easier to gripe and moan from behind a keyboard though isn’t it?

    Quick update.

Good meeting with Steve Waggott. good guy

He answered all my questions and was very personable.

the pitch has been improve and a number of areas have been stitched up to help the quality of the pitch throughout the season. So money has been spend on the pitch as others have said.

ST sales have been good and better than start of last season first home game. I won't given exactly figures. Not my place to.

I was happy what I heard about how the new footballing structure brought in(I said I agree and wanted this structure in place for some time) and how we identify players and scouting. I won't go into exact details as it not my place or position to. Just for the record I didn't asked for specific names or positions we want signings in as I didn't arrange the meeting for this purpose or wanted to asked those questions to him.

I praised the club on keeping its Category 1 status and being the only club in the championship who has this. It is important part of the club football strategy going forward and vital for our club.  Spoken about the good prospects coming through now and how good it is for the future of the club

Also just for the record I won't be answering any questions on the meeting.

Thanks for sharing Chaddy. Not much to report back seemingly, but it seems like you got some reassurance from the meeting. Hopefully we can all move on from this now as the repeated questions aimed at you are tedious in the extreme.

Its next on my list Hypnotic.

I started to watch the first episode a few weeks back and right away noticed a grown up Marlo Stanfield playing a policeman.

I don’t know if they’ve done it on purpose but the good guys from the wire seem to play bad guys in this one and vice versa, nice touch. Hope you enjoy it Gav.

  4. I just finished “We own this city”, from David Simon, the genius behind the all time best TV show, The Wire. Brilliant performances from Jon Bernthal, the guy who played Sean Suiter, and the civil rights advocate, an amazing conclusion, and a riveting true life story of corruption and the futility of the war on drugs.

Similar in a lot of ways to the wire, this takes a more matter-of-fact approach to crime and punishment in Baltimore, with less humour and less character development. Like the wire, it shows the trickle down effects of disinterested or downright foolish policy on institutions and ordinary people that are affected by them. People get caught up along the way and are used, chewed up, and become complicit, while those trying to do good have to fight an unwinnable war against criminals and a crooked and poorly administered system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this show. At only 6 episodes it is an easy binge watch, and although it takes a while to adjust to the accents and the narrative which jumps through timelines and parallel storylines, the payoff is worth it as everything is drawn together for a hard hitting and unflinching conclusion.

Lots of good cameos from the cast of the wire along the way, and I believe I noticed a member of the Barksdale crew being referred to in a court scene near the end 😄

Shane Long at 35 years old, no thank you 🤣

An extra striker could be handy, but we already have a natural bagger who (I believe) is going to be attracting offers of £10m+ this time next year... it's the year of the Vale!

Speaking of which, does anyone know a site where I can stick a few quid on Jack Vale to score 15+ goals this season? Would consider doing similar for Markanday too. SkyBet doesn't seem to have such options

Skybet got their fingers badly burned on BBD last season, they’ve changed their policy to no longer accept bets on Rovers players 🤑

Broughton and Tomasson are the two most qualified appointments we've made during the Venky's reign of terror.

I have to disagree with this.

Lambert and Mowbray had far more experience of football management when we appointed them. Lambert didn’t last long, and Mowbray couldn’t achieve what we wanted and so has departed.

We’re all trying to be positive but JDL hasn’t done much in his career to say he’ll be any more successful than TM, and I fear that a DoF who is not given the tools to do his job may go the same way as Lambert did.

I can't imagine that the new Coach, his staff and the DOF will be at the club for long if that is the case.

I think you’re right here. What’s the point of hiring a DoF who isn’t allowed to spend money? I think JDL’s relative lack of experience will work in the Club’s favour as this has probably been sold to him as an opportunity to get his name out there and build some recognition in the UK with the potential for a move to a bigger club. Just depends on how long he’ll put up with the shambles that is Blackburn Rovers these days.

We've made a real ass of ourselves tbf. Butt, onto the next one. Let's get these transfer wheels lubricated and bring a big one in. We might be able to avoid other clubs gazumping us if we sneak someone in the back door.

I didn’t know much about the guy so I used the internet for help. My google search for “Anel video” was vouch more illuminating than I’d dreamed possible.

  9. The greatest Irish player I’ve seen at Rovers is undoubtedly Duff. Even as a Northern Irish fan I was immensely proud that a countryman of his calibre was on our books. I told all my big club supporting mates about him, then at the World Cup he was truly world class. Probably the most technically gifted Rovers player I’ve seen, he was quick, a good finisher, and held on to the ball like it was glued to his feet.

Honourable mention for Keith Gillespie - I thought he’d be one of the players to push us on but I can’t recall if he played much? I know he had gambling problems which must have affected him. Proper old school winger, think he scored against his old club Utd as well 😁

There has always been an Irish/Northern Irish connection at Rovers, even of late I loved DL and I willed Corry Evans on, even though he was only good in short bursts. Sad now DL has left and tbh there aren’t any promising players for Ireland North or South coming through.

edit - Steven Reid was class as well. I knew of him as a promising millwall player (same squad as the godlike Cherno Samba) from champ manager back in the day, so I was excited when we picked him up. As others have mentioned, that goal 👏 but sadly another who didn’t feature enough, this time down to injury issues.

    Nothing wrong in saying:

'Our main aim has to be to secure a return to the PL as soon as we can - it's where the club needs to be.  At the same time we need to put plans into place which will give the club a sustainable growth'.

Correct. That would have been a great introduction to the fans tbh, and a sentiment we could all get behind. Your original post came across in a more negative, demanding light IMO. I didn’t see anything wrong with Broughton’s presser, but I don’t attach much importance to these things and am glad to see a sensible and measured approach to his career here 🤞

Always suspicious of guys with journeys in mind (Mowbray) and long terms goals (Broughton) "We want to become a sustainable Premier League football club. That's not going to happen overnight, but with a really clear plan and by sticking with that plan, I really believe we can get there."

We've been promised jam tomorrow for far too long.

The bottom line is we need results and fast - the only goal the club should focus on is promotion to the PL this coming season.  Achieve that and all the 'nicer long term stuff' should more readily fall into place.

Oh definitely. How realistic of you to expect a bloke on his first interview, before even meeting the players or staff, with a new boss to build a relationship with, to suggest that he can achieve what nobody else has managed in the last decade and more. I mean it’s silly to have a long term goal, it would have been more impressive if he’d just said “we’re for the premier league next season.” Plans? Sustainable growth? Common sense? No thanks! I see your point, I remember being delighted when the Venkys took over and immediately started with the champions league statements. That was real ambition, never mind that it was unrealistic and foolish to promise something that was going to be incredibly difficult.

From my reading of the article he was moderately successful, poor in cup competitions and unpopular with the fans. The Norwegian Mowbray? Probably suffers in comparison to the stellar job Brendan Rogers did there after him.

He wasn't massively impressive at Celtic, I think that is the top and bottom of it.

He won the league twice with Celtic albeit without Rangers in the league at the time. I appreciate that it is not much of an ask in the circumstances but he has had success elsewhere hasn’t he? I am genuinely trying to find out how good he actually is.

Couple of Celtic-supporting colleagues told me he got a lot of unfair stick when he was up there and said that he brought through a lot of good players into the first team. Opinions and all that but I was cautiously optimistic when I heard it.

Anyone who says that from now on should be fined £1,000.

We played the second half of the season in relegation form.

    (FFS).

Can’t really argue with your assessment of our form, but I wouldn’t be amazed if we hear wistful comparisons to TM throughout this coming season. We are making a big gamble here, and the ones throwing the dice are unable to count the dots. The managerial candidates we’ve been linked with recently have not impressed me at all.

Again that's entirely unfair lumping Ainsworth and Warne in with Ferguson.

They're experienced, successful managers. Ferguson is a no mark.

Totally agree. While their success has come at a level lower than we should be considering, at least they have held the top job and had some achievements while in it. Ferguson being linked is bizarre given his age and lack of experience. While I can see that some hated TM so much that they would support anyone else in the role, I think they are in for a rude awakening this season if we get someone unproved at our level.

What exactly has Ronny Deila done to deserve the Rovers job?

Did ok in the Norwegian League, moved to Celtic and won the league during a time that their only challengers were Aberdeen.

Then went back to the Norwegian league and did poorly. After that he goes to the MLS, the retirement village for ex Premier League players.

NO THANKS. I’d rather have Warne, Ainsworth or even Dunc.

Deila has better experience than the three coaches you mention - worked with a top club, succeeded in different leagues, and has managed players of a far higher calibre than Ainsworth and warne have. Didn’t Pep Guardiola start at a low level in Spain before success in the MLS? Barring the entirely unrealistic suggestions of Farke and Carvalhal he is the first coach of any substance that we’ve been linked with. I’d be pleased if we got him in, and I would be completely underwhelmed with Ainsworth, Ferguson, or Warne. Tbh we’d have been better off sticking with TM than that motley crew - his recent record is far more impressive than any of them, hell Ferguson has never been appointed manager and he’s now 50.  Sadly I reckon we’ll end up with someone like Woodgate.

edit - Guardiola never managed at a low level or in the MLS, don’t have any idea where I got that from! But the rest of my post still stands…

  17. “You’re dead to me” is an excellent history podcast. Good guests and interesting topics 👍

After listening to YDTM I got into Peter frankopan, currently reading his excellent book “the Silk Road”. Looks at the Near East, and how the flow of trade, philosophy and culture from east to west has affected world history and cultural development. A very readable overview on historical developments since the Roman Empire.

I’ve also enjoyed “genghis khan and the making of the modern world”, a revisionist look at the monghol empire which certainly opened my eyes to a different viewpoint on the period (eg the mongols were incredibly liberal with regards to religious practice and pretty much had full freedom of religious expression in their conquered territories).

Great idea for a topic, I’m looking forward to hearing what others are in to.
