I’d argue If mowbray didn’t see him as an option for that position wouldn’t we be after a left back , leaves bell and at a push Williams, both of who struggles at times last season. Hart will go out on loan again I presume. Seen as an experienced head to coach the youngsters through late collapses as seen last season with bell and Armstrong not strong enough to stop crosses coming in late in games. I think if ur expecting him to link up with dack etc your going to be disappointed but hey it’s Blackburn and mowbray so you never know

Do you have an idea of the wages Downing has been put on?

Sorry to tell you that downing was signed to compete with bell for the left back position. Leaving chapman as the only out and out winger. I don’t want the striker or mids converted nonsense so I believe another proper winger is needed. Why we haven’t signed a fullback as there is downing/bell one side and Bennett/ nyambe the other. Tony doesn’t want any others

    This sounds bad.

Has i'm mainly a lurker, i do find all this squabbling beggers belief. Whilst we're on the subject may i add that i think this mb is in free fall, whether thats because theirs 1. No transfere activity hence a build up of frustration  2. Nothing to post about except petty juvenile squabbles who knows.

Yeah, message-boards tend to deteriorate during summer because people have nothing to talk about; it's made even worse when there is a transfer drought. Having said that the juvenile bickering is unbelievable. I think the cause of it is that when people see opinions they don't like and post a sarcastic, passive aggressive reply instead of either ignoring it or trying to have a civilised discussion.

He was playing at Southend who survived in League One by the narrowest of margins.

He'll be 23 later this year. Not really young.

If impressing in a few months at a rubbish League One team is enough for us we'd be better going after some players from Accy Stanley.

Yeah fair enough. My point was we have three mediocre left-backs and only one mediocre right-back, making signing a new right-back a bigger priority.

Nyambe is a fine player but last season his progress stalled after Christmas when Mowbray for some reason decided that Bennett was our first choice right back which meant on some occasions Nyambe didn't even make the squad. Nyambe should be our first choice right back but sadly the manager doesn't agree but even if Nyambe was our 1st choice right back we would still need another player to cover him there as Bennett showed consistently last season that he is a terrible full back.

As for Bell you quite simply cannot have a full back who does not attempt to stop crosses going into the box.

As for not gelling we conceded 69 goals last season even though that was the third season that most of that defence had played together. Even if there were some teething problems (which is by no means a certainty) it would improve the team over the course of the season and beyond that.

If he uses Bennett at right back and Bell or Williams at left back then he is setting himself up to fail.

I agree with this mostly. I think the plan this season is to stick with Bell and Williams at Left-Back and give Sam Hart some games after his successful spell at Southend and by the looks of it a good pre-season. For me this means we definitely have to sign a centre-half and a decent right-back to put pressure on Nyambe.

As a left back I would take Bell all day long. In an ideal world I would look to bring a new one in, Olsson ideally, however I think centre half and keeper are priorities right now.

Yeah fair enough, I just think Williams is a better player to have because he can play center-half.  Mowbray appears to have high hopes for Sam Hart at Left-Back so hopefully he has a good breakthrough this season.

    A defence lining up like

    Hart

    Nyambe Lenihan Skrtel Bell

    Is 100 times better than

    Raya

    Bennett Lenihan Mulgrew Williams

Roll on the announcements. Still believe this will be the best window we have had since relegation from the top flight.

I have no idea why Bell is immune from criticism, I think he's worse than Williams.

Edit: perhaps not immune but he always seems to ranked higher than Williams which I never see as fair.

He had a month ban (not sure why, don't know the ins and outs) the ban is over but he is yet to return.

He were always controversial and pretty annoying but he did start a lot of different conversations. This thread so far has gone through small periods of transfer speculation and then reverted back to arguing over Brereton.

With the transfer window now officially open I assume that we've paid some kind of fee and Brereton is now our player rather than Forest's. Odd that there hasn't been any confirmation from the club yet though. With his lacklustre introduction to the team I wonder if they're just going to let it slip under the radar and not announce anything?

I reckon the money would have been paid at the time we signed him. The whole loan until January thing just seemed to be a formality to get around the new transfer rules.

I'm guessing you didn't watch the game on Wednesday?

No way should Williams who hasn't played this season should be in ahead of Bell, Smallwood isn't at the races, Armstrong is wearing a protective boot and Dack is struggling to be fit.

I did attend the Reading game and as I sit in the Riverside stand I only got a proper look at bell in the first half, in which he was dreadful.
