  1. Think who, and if, someone comes in after reed and Rodwell will be the defining transfer of this window. The squad is threadbare which can be seen by looking at the bench from last night.

Positives from these though is that no one knew anything about Rodwell or Reed before Mowbray mentioned them. Why were they not leaked?

  2. Rothwell was phenomenal last night, showed a lot of attacking threat but also a lot of heart in defence.

Reed for me would be a better signing than Rodwell, don’t need two midfielders and Reed has performed more recently. Rodwell just seems like a lost cause, but if Mowbray sees something in him then I’m all for it.

Desperately in need of attacking additions though.

I know we're living in a different footballing world nowadays and our scouting limitations will be natural, but it wasn't too many years ago we were 'scouting' the likes of Santa Cruz (€3m), Lewandowski (€4m) and Benni McCarthy (€2.5m). = £8m.

Now we're looking at signing a 19 kid from Nottingham Forest with 8 goals in 2nd division football for potentially the same price as those 3 combined... where's the bucket ?.

Would we not be better with Gallacher, Bauer and Freeman for almost the cost of Bereton? I'm not certain, however if we are spending £8m+ on a forward, there must surely be others worthy of that price.

I mean, we only signed Bradley Dack because he played well in a 4-1 defeat for Gillingham. So Even though the manager does know a good player WHEN he sees one, I just fear we're being ripped off because of lack of scouting ambition.

Gallagher on his own would cost more than Brereton

Lambert signed Ward and Bennett for peanuts.  He also got that Simeon Jackson in for free (6 month deal). Loans were Danny Graham, Jordi Gomes and Matt Grimes if I remember correctly.  Then sold Rhodes on the promise of funds in summer.

Bennett and Graham were good signings then, the rest were mediocre. Compared to some of Mowbray's signings.

Lambert led us to a 15th placed finish after only taking over mid way through the season and didn't spend a penny on transfer fees. Let's see if Mowbray betters that this season  with his own squad and a bit of money.

Did he not buy Bennett? sorry I didn't realise he didn't spend any money I thought he had.

The whole problem returns to the owners being unpredictable.  If TM sold them his vision of building a promotion team over 2/3 windows, and he gets £10 mil each window, we can afford to spend big on one or 2 players each window.  However, the owners have never shown any previous indication (Rhodes aside) that they will spend that level on transfers consistently.  Lambert thought he was getting it and look how that turned out.

Most likely, as TM even mentioned himself, if the money isn't spent, it may not be available again.  In which case signing 3 or 4 is much safer option.  Strengthens the squad and provides better odds of a profit on at least one player - enabling us to become a trading club once more.  It really is the only way we will ever 'wash our face' outside of the Prem.

Yeah but being fair would you have given £10 million for Lambert to spend. What he got out of the team was mediocre at best, admittedly he did make some shrewd signings but nowhere near to success that Mowbray has had with similar funds.

Thank you! Was starting to think it was just me this was irritating. I've been tempted to message him on Twitter and ask him to stop. It really is terrible use of language for a professional writer. Incorrectly applied, usually, as well as unimaginative by virtue of repetition.

It’s awful for a professional reporter! He literally has one job

Not much sign of the loan player we were more or less promised before the weekend. Looks like the loan window is moving with the same well oiled efficiency as our dealings during the permanent window. Get ready for us to make a last minute bid to loan someone with an option to purchase for 10m when it is too physically late to complete any deal on deadline day

incidentally it was very strange terminology used when Sharpe ran the story on Monday whereby TM "admitted" there'd be another signing before weekend. Almost as if it was being done against his better judgement. You'd usually save that sort of terminology for bad news I.e. TM "admitted" player X would have to be sold to balance the books etc.

Presumably just a slip of the pen by Sharpe. Doesn't appear to be happening anyway.

He always writes 'Mowbray admitted such and such', not a one-off and it annoys me everytime. Makes it sound like he's coming clean to some crime or something

    And they didn't pay 12 M.

Yes but Karanka and forest are obviously going all out for promotion this season, and currently Grabban is a better bet for goals. Whereas Mowbray has stated several times that he is building a team, so buying players with potential.

The only reason people are bothered with the (potential) Brereton signing is because they want him to go all out for promotion this season. Which he knows is slightly unrealistic.

  10. Big fee, but trust in Mowbray. I’ve heard about brereton a lot from my friends, never personally seen him play, but he’s gonna be next level in my opinion. Don’t have any facts to back that up however.

Also I think 5-6 million is the going fee for young, English players who have played for England at youth level and is relatively experienced in the championship.

Are you critiscing the fact we are going for this guy? A highly rated youngster who was linked with united and Liverpool not so long ago. He sounds like a great option to me.

I assume he’s criticising the fact they’ve slapped  12M price tag on him and don’t deem him good enough to play for them.

Apart from a tweet from a 'Sky Source' made last night where is the evidence or indeed remote suggestion that we have that sort of money left, let alone to spend on one player?

I thought it was odd when I heard it last night and nothing since then has changed. I doubt we'll spend £4 million on one player ever again under these owners.

I know sorry, my first message was poorly worded. IF we had £4 million, why didn't we spend it sooner. I'm saying that the reason its come out now is to win favours with owners

According to his wiki page, Celtic had three bids rejected by Hibs for McGinn in July. Do we have the funds and would he want to move here?

The highest bid was 1.5 million, and Hibs wanted closer to 3 million. Not an unreasonable amount of money for us especially as he’s on the last year of his contract.

Armstrong is a very good signings, 10+ goals this season from him.

  14. If we can buy Armstrong for 3 million, then McGinn doesn't seem like a player who would be out of our budget, especially as he will be on much lower wages than Armstrong. McGinn, Armstrong, Maddison, Bauer? that would be a very very good window. Just hope some things materialise in the next couple of days.

I personally am not so thrilled with Gallagher.  I don't believe he is that good, seemed to me like he believed his own hype.  Maybe things would be different if he was here permanently.

This posh fella, I don't think we are getting him and does he really help improve the starting 11? is he an upper end of the Championship type player?

I would love to see a skillfull winger with oace that CAN cross a ball.  That said I do think the squad as it is now, with the togetherness and unity in the squad, can hold our own for a mid table finish.  Question is if we start out in a bad run hiw well does that unity remain.  Quietly optimistic for this season and that is so not me.

He definitely improves the starting 11, but true I doubt we’re getting him.
