  1. Far Cry 2

Looks great, will be getting this.

I didn't like Far Cry at first (save for the absolutely amazing graphics) but just as I was considering returning it, the whole game changed into something completely thrilling and ended up being one of my favourite Xbox games.

Speaking of returning games, I picked up a pre-owned copy of F.E.A.R. for the 360 and absolutely hated it immediately. Clunky controls, dated graphics (even for the 360) and clumsy deaths convinced me to trade it for Dead Rising which is much more fun. :)

  2. Scarface is really good but when you think about it, not an awful lot actually happens. In fact for an allegedly epic movie, much of it is very rushed.

Anyway, I saw In the Valley of Elah on Friday and it's a remarkable film. Tommy Lee Jones has rightly been nominated for an Oscar, his performance is incredible.

  3. Finally finished the epic Gates of Fire and I'm exhausted. It's a truly astounding piece of work.

I've moved onto Robert Hicks's The Widow of the South which plays out around 1864's bloody battle of Franklin in Tennessee. I'm very into the American Civil War and last March spent a week in Virginia, the focal point of the entire conflict. The book is beautifully written in a mix of styles and from a number of first-person viewpoints and features, amongst others, the fearsome Confederate general (and later KKK founder) Nathan Bedford Forrest . I'd recommend it to anyone with a similar interest.

  4. I loved devil may cry 1.

Devil may Cry 2 was awful

Devil May Cry 3 was back to the old stuff but I was rubbish at it (because IMO it was mega hard)

I like the look of the new one but will wait for the price to drop - there are better games that will hopefully be released around the same time

(I hear a rumour that the demo for it will be up in the next 2 weeks)

I have to agree. I bought Devil May Cry 3's special edition last year and haven't touched it in months. The difficulty on that edition was supposed to have been dialled down but it was still stupidly hard, to the point where it was no longer enjoyable. And after playing God of War I find Devil May Cry to be very plodding.

  5. Hmmm....

I managed to do a few assassinations without alerting anybody at all. The one with the guy on the boat, the book-burning dudes and a couple of the earlier ones spring to mind. The mad doctor in the hospital as well. There's an achievement for doing it stealthily on the Xbox version.

I'm talking about the aftermath. I've managed to assassinate each of the targets so far with my hidden blade but you'll always be chased afterwards.

  6. I like it also. I have three kills to go and while the repetitive nature of the game can be tiresome, there's enough to look at and enough cityscape to traverse without the whole thing being spoiled.

What is annoying though is that this should have been nigh on flawless when you consider how sloppy some of it is. The crowd AI is atrocious, the rendering of many civilians is quite poor and the fact that a supposedly deadly assassin can never carry out a job without alerting the entire city and having to make a desperate run for it after every kill, is very annoying. This is not really a stealth game.

    Other stupid glitches include:

-The ability to 'stealth assassinate' people in the middle of the street.

-The fact that every mission follows the exact same path. As I said above, this isn't disastrous but it still remains a poor strand of a much hyped game.

-The investigations themselves are pretty crappy, be it the clunky interrogations, naff pick-pocketing or the fact that info gleaned by Altair is never available to the player rather it is simply a means of checking the boxes before each assassination.

-When in a mass brawl (rescuing citizens from groups of guards will always involve the exact same sequence) the enemy surround you and take you on one by one which makes it a ludicrously easy game to get through.

  7. We're snowed under.

I was out for dinner last night and the snow started falling around 6.30 or so. By the time I left the restaurant there was a couple of inches worth lying on the ground and I had to abandon both my attempts to drive a friend home (after much swerving) and my car in a unmanned car park, before my father showed up in his Land Rover to get me home. Unbelievable. :o

  8. just got home from watch AVP 2 on it's release day here in australia. i am somewhat dissapointed by this effort. like the aliens films, the 2 of this franchise so far has had different directors and i much more enjoyed the first one by paul w.s. anderson. i also thought that while the concept for the 2nd part was fine, the script was not upto very much at all. i would not be surprised if this effort didn't do so well at the box office.

You mean it's worse than a film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson?!
