  1. Morecambe deserved their victory tonight.  Their manager brought on two subs at half-time, switched his formation, and caused us no end of problems.  Mowbray again tried three at the back and once again it failed - just like every other time he's tried it.

This was like so many of last seasons games - slow build-up, passing sideways, backwards and then a long punt upfield to nobody in particular.

We started brightly but quickly ran out of steam - which is a worry in itself.  We carried little or no threat going forward with the Chilean version of Brereton being replaced by the usual Bambi  version who struggled to keep on his feet and continually gave the ball away.

Without Armstrong's goals I really do fear for us this season.  It's certainly going to be a long hard winter watching this lot.

I take it you're not convinced by Pickering, Parson?

Far from convinced.  From the games I've seen thus far - admittedly only pre-season and the two games this week, he looks a slightly slower version of Bell.  I thought he was awful tonight and caught out of position far too often.  Going forward he seems to offer very little and his crossing seems just as erratic as Bell.

Lancashire Senior Cup  5th Dec 1967.

    Rovers 1 - Morecambe 2

    Rovers

    Blacklaw

Coxon, Clayton ( sub Sharples ), Coddington, Wilson

    Ferguson, Rogers, Hole, Connelly

    Darling, Gilliver

    Scorer - Ferguson pen

    Att 1,600

I’d suggest that was a worse defeat than tonight’s.

I remember that game Tyrone.  At that time First and Second division clubs fielded their second string and Third and Fourth Division clubs fielded their first team.  On the back of a defeat, Quigley selected the First team - partly to build up a bit of confidence - and they crashed to a defeat.  Got to say that was a far superior side than the one we have at present.  What would I give for that midfield - plus a proper left-back who could tackle and defend!

Just seen this.....  Memories from more than 50 years ago are fading but I remember him as a reserve to Blacklaw. I'm surprised he was our No 1 in 1966-67 which wasn't a bad season as we were near the top most of the time. I can only say our defence must have been good!

I remember standing in the shed behind the bowler's arm at East Lancs CC. One of the wags shouted as the EL wicketkeeper dived and missed a ball down the leg side: "have you been wtaching Barton?".

It was funny at the time

My memory of Barton was that even when having a good game, he was always likely to make the most horrendous and costly error.  He went from an ever-present in 66-67, when we finished fourth and enjoyed a decent season, to becoming the regular back-up to Adam Blacklaw, the old Burnley favourite, the following season.

Not the tallest, to say the least, and somewhat portly in build he nonetheless carved out a career that lasted over a decade with Preston North End and ourselves but was mostly spent playing in the Central League.

Happy memories of a time when supporting Rovers seemed so much more enjoyable than today.

  4. Personally, I'd rather go with Magloire or Carter in a back-four, alongside Lenihan, and forget about Ayala.  Yesterday they both looked uncomfortable in Mowbray's attempts at a back five.  Ever since he came Mowbray has tried the three centre-back option and can't get it to work with the players we have - or perhaps it's a case of the players not understanding what he wants.  Whatever the reason,  Mowbray's overcomplicated systems tend to highlight the weaknesses in a player rather than try to play to their strengths.

Wisdom of the crowds type thing…what do we predict for the following…?

    1. Will Steve Waggott still be at Rovers on 1/7/22 ? If no, date of departure.

    2. Will Tony Mowbray still be manager on 1/2/22 ? If no, date of departure.

    3. Rovers Player of the Season 21/22 ?

    4. Where will Rovers finish the season ?

    5. Who will be championship winners ?

Reply to this with your predictions & we’ll assess the consensus…👍🏻

    1. Will leave in the summer of 2022 if Mowbray goes

    2. Yes.  Will be here until his contract runs out.

    3. Kaminski - he'll be the one with most to do during the season.

    4. 4th from bottom would be great but I fear it will be below that unless some serious signings are made.

    5. One of the three who were relegated last season.

Venus is another Mowbray appointment - all roads lead back to Mowbray sadly.

At the end of the day all roads lead back to Venkys just have they have for the past decade.  Every decision they have made has taken us further and further away from where we want and need to be.  If the owners were unhappy with Mowbray they would get rid of him.  Clearly, as he is still here they are content for him to continue.

    What an absolute shit show.

Having to be bailed out by a non League side. We're meant to be a professional Club in the second tier of English football.

    So:

    Extortionate match day prices

Season ticket prices raised during a pandemic

    The Brockhall fiasco

New pitch promised which never came to fruition

Edit: Young fans excluded from a Club mural

    No kit to play in

The list of fiascos gets longer and longer.

Come on Venky's - sort this rabble down at Ewood out!

    Please!

Why are they going to sort it out now Rev? It's been ten years and counting.  The names change from time to time - Shebby, Hunt, Senior, Shaw etc/ Kean, Berg, Appleton, Coyle - but club continues it's never ending downward spiral.  To change things they have to be interested and that's something they haven't shown since they bought the club.

As for the today the main plus for me was being able to go to a football game with friends and enjoy a social occasion.  As for the game I thought Barnes and Carter looked good at the back, whilst Butterworth and McBride showed promise up front.  The predictable was Johnson and Vale coming off injured.

Don't understand your post Parson, are you claiming the flak he is getting is unjustified, therefore he is doing a good job shielding the owners from it?

Edit: Even if that's not exactly what you meant, get in a really good manager and a half decent CEO and we'll do a lot better than with Mowbray and Waggott irrespective of the owners.

I thought you would also be pragmatic enough to realise that whilst we are losing the thick end of £20m p.a. having owners who are seemingly wealthy enough to cover it without batting an eyelid does have its advantages albeit we are where we are due to their poor decision making in the past.

We are where we are and can't change what has happened in the past, that doesn't mean we have to be happy with it though and we can only try and influence things going forward.

My point Rev, is that they are still making the same mistakes as they did ten years ago.  They may well stump up another £20m p.a. for the next ten years and we will be no nearer the Premier League than we are today.  They've been changing managers and CEO's for a decade and we are still light years away from where the club was when they bought it.

Yes we need change at every level but that isn't going to happen until those at the top - in India - start to get their decision making right and from what I can see there is no sign of that happening.

PS - Hope you and the family are keeping well during these difficult times.

Not too dissimilar a situation to last season. A proper CEO would keep fans engaged. Last season it looked probable we weren't going to be able to attend and the Club needed a membership scheme at a nominal fee with some sort of gift, benefit or reward attached to keep people engaged signed up and on board. We could always have upgraded the membership to a ticket had the time arose. Instead we inexplicably waited until it looked like we DEFINITELY wouldn't be able to attend and then put prices up by up to 25% thereby reducing the season ticket base from just short of 10 k to a paltry 2.5k.

This season it looks likely we will be let back in and it looks unlikely the demand for ST'S will massively out strip supply even at a quarter capacity. No harm whatsoever in putting them on sale on a first come first served basis. If the Government do a bottle job yet again and things go tits up on the relaxation of restrictions front  it shouldn't be too onerous a task to decide what concessions people who have already bought season tickets should have.

Waggott seriously worries me. If you wanted to plant a mole in the Club to deliberately get every decision wrong, run the Club completely into the ground and ultimately take it into administration you couldn't be doing a better job.

Which is why the problem remains with the people who appointed Waggott in the first place and who are happy for him and Mowbray etc to continue in position.  No wonder the owners are happy to keep them in position to attract all the flak and take it off them.  If the owners didn't like the job he was doing they could remove him - in the same way they've done with other administrators they've employed.  Clearly they must be happy with the way things are going or they would act.

Wake up Gav, why do you think we we training on an already knackered pitch in the middle of winter in atrocious conditions?

Of course Mowbray was instrumental in it just as much as the other two.

They tried (and failed) to pull off the same sort of scam at Coventry as well. You can't pin that on Venky's.

I'm sorry Rev but I simply don't believe that the owners were not involved in the attempt to sell the training ground.  It couldn't be sold without their approval or knowledge.  It's fantasy to believe otherwise imo.

Is this going to be discussed on two threads then?

Nothing in that story makes sense.

Coventry have just confirmed on their website that they have been placed under a transfer embargo.  It appears that Coventry took up the Government's offer of file company accounts late during the pandemic.  However, as the EFL rules don't permit it they have been placed under a transfer embargo.  Another example of the EFL not being fit for purpose.

Who knows these days. If it's just essential staff what do you need so many stewards for? No fans. And why are Dalglish and Ferguson for example attending games in director boxes if it's just essential staff?

Get the fans forum to ask Waggott the question?

Club directors are allowed to attend and they are both directors of some description.
