  1. No way was that a red card, and whilst Halsey had a stinker getting in the way of three Rovers attacks amongst other things, it was effectively the linesman who got Todd the card.

If only football adopted ideas from forward thinking Rugby League, by bringing in much needed technology, we might have finished with 11 men and three points. But there again the Iraqis might start morning prayers at the White House..........

  2. Went out for a couple last night, flicked teletext on, latest score Charlton 2 Rovers 0. Got round to my mate's and it's now 2-1. About half ten, asked at the bar what final score was and I was told got beaten 2-0. I said, no it must have been 2-1 because I know Rovers pulled one back.

Came down this morning thinking we'd been beaten, teletext showing 2-3. Dear me, they've put wrong score up, thinks I. Not until I go to main headlines and double check does it finally register! biggrin.gif

  3. Good post Revidge - and my sentiments exactly. As has been pointed out by some, alcoholism is an illness and, as such, George didn't choose to waste a liver. He chose to accept the organ and with it the gift of life (who wouldn't?). Unfortunately, the rest happened because of his illness and there was nothing he could do about it.

My wife's cousin started drinking at a more serious level when he was around 17 or 18. Very respectable family, both his parents are teachers, sound upbringing etc. Over the last 10 years or so they have tried everything to get him on the straight and narrow but he had already progressed to being an alcoholic and it's all been to no avail. He's presently in a bedsit in Manchester, spends his giro on booze and in all honesty doesn't have too long to live. He wasn't caught in time. Like George it wasn't a question of choices and like George there's very little anyone can do, though not for the want of trying.

  4. Mancunian accents are pretty easy to imitate.

  5. Watched the game on Sky's Football First programme last night. After yet another Rovers attack starting with extremely fast, accurate, passing football, the commentator drooled...."oh, this is fantastic....!" tinykit.gif

After being a critic of Emerton for some time, I want to hold my hand up. Bentley's presence has given him a kick up the backside and yesterday was a superb performance by Brett - long may it continue.

  6. ....... on BBC Scotland, their pundits were saying that they struggle because they're only a small country.  Is that really true in comparison with others of similar size, such as Croatia (pop. 2005 estimate 4.45 million), Slovenia (pop. 2005 estimate 1.96 million), Norway (pop. 2005 estimate 4.6 million) and Slovakia (pop. 2005 estimate 5.38 million)?  Mind you, we're pretty good at making excuses for the England squad when we need to...

Part of the problem is what the kids these days get up to in their spare time. When I was a lad from the age of six to sixteen, I kicked a ball around in the street with my mates and I bet most lads in the 60's and 70's did the same. Now, a significantly higher proportion of young lads seem intent on just hanging around street corners, looking threatening, dressed in their regulation "street gear." Aimlessly hanging around, nothing to do and nowhere to go, blaming everyone but themselves for their lack of activity.

Despite its size, Scotland had a great production line of footballing talent, Peter Lorimar, Eddie Gray, Billy Bremner, Kenny Daldlish, Dennis law etc etc. The list could go on and on. But now there's almost nothing in comparison.

England being much bigger than its neighbour has not suffered to the same degree because there are still plenty of talented footballers coming through. Like Scotland though it still suffers from the youth of today problem and the numbers of footballing greats is nothing like that of previous years.

  7. this can be shown in games at ewood park , some bloke behind me always curses dickov and previously as "Scottish ..." whereas i don't use the term "English" followed by an explicive to Rovers English players.

    I don't know if I should......erm, no.........go on then I will.

It's nothing to do with that. It's because of the way you deep fry Mars Bars. Nothing more, nothing less. The English love a normal, plain, virginal Mars Bar. To deep fry them is sacrilage! Shouldn't be allowed. What can any of you say to justify it? biggrin.gif

Now then, I must be in the minority, because I am English and love Scotland. The people, the lansdscape, from Islay to Ullapool and from the Highlands to Orkney. It's a beautiful country. I don't even mind if Scotland win......it's great to be different.

  8. Man United were extremely lucky when Beckham, Scholes, etc came through in so far as so many came through at once. It will never happen again. They were, by and large, able to stop at United for many years due to the size and stature of that club.

I used to watch both our youth teams around 1997/98. For cup games they were allowed to pick from both years and play a sort of merged team. Beattie and Thomas up front with Johnson and Duff the wide men - what a team! I even went to Bury away on the strength of watching Duffer play.

Dunn and Taylor emerged shortly after. On the whole our Academy has been almost second to none although it's fair to say it has "dried up" in recent seasons. Part of the problem is that all teams in the PL are sh!t scared of getting relegated and as such want instant success if they are seen to be struggling. Thus they buy established players, many from the continent, instead of bringing on home grown talent. In turn, the young, local, lads on PL teams' books get farmed out to lower league teams and have to work their way back up if they are good enough.

I still think and hope McEveley will be able to make the grade with Rovers. Let's hope that soon both Taylor and Jay are competing with each other for that left back spot.

  9. In which case I assume your in the small majority who seem to enjoy their controversial status of ''I can find something to hate about everyone,'' whilst making a complete fool of yourself with your inablity to spell reception esque words such as 'to.'

Just been to a Chinese restaurant with two of them. The banquet cost nearly as much as the admission fee at Ewood but we certainly celebrated the victory in style. biggrin.gif
