If that remark is true what amazes me is the players hadn’t lost faith in him years ago.

Mowbray keeps the influential players on side and picks on the less influential ones, always has. He won’t lose the dressing room as those with an influence in the dressing room like him. Very similar to Bowyer.

On reflection. Decent bit of business. He’s not setting the world alight in the PL. We weren’t going to mount any sort of promotion charge this season with the clown in charge,  so may as well get some cash to keep the lights on.

Looking at some Southampton forums, he’s starting to cop a fair bit of stick, mostly along the lines of “good Championship player, not cut out for Premier League”

Did anyone ever say it wasn’t good business? We had to sell. The Raya sale was bad business, Armstrong’s sale was inevitable.

He screwed up the subs, again. You're acting like this is a new thing. Poveda, Clarkson and Magloire shouldn't have been on the bench never mind the pitch.

3 at the back with wingbacks - so that's 5 at the back with 3 forwards Chaddy. That's madness when we're trying to hang on.

And two out of the two wingbacks aren’t wingbacks, genius.

  4. That last night was the one of the worst displays of managerial ineptitude I’ve witnessed. What on earth was the formation and why did he seemingly throw away a draw when it was clear at 2-2 that we were incredibly lucky to still be in the game? He was going to make a double/triple substitution and for some reason beyond me only made one, and that one was Rothwell (one of two in midfield) for Poveda?!? They had two really good chances to score before he had chance to make the remaining substitutions and he didn’t think to shore it up, he thought that the time called for two lightweight loanees with virtually no first team experience. Absolutely moronic.

If Buckley is the poster boy of the academy, there's no point having one.

the gulf in ability between elliot and buckley is an almighy chasm, one is destined to be a regular in the liverpool side while the other will end up playing non league,in buckleys case,if you`re not showing anything at 21 then it`s not going to happen for you at this level

Buckley couldn't carve a joint of roast beef. Totally overrated. Lightweight, not quick and easily knocked off the ball. Needs to go out on loan and beef up somewhat

    Agree.

I think Buckley is so overrated.

Some on here bang on like he's the new Messi.

If he's such a 'special talent' eyed by PL clubs then why the feck has he not battered down our first team door and made himself an indispensable part of our team.  £10million for Buckley - someone aint half havin' a larf!

Contrast with Elliott who is a mere 17  - now that is a lad with REAL talent and potential who COMMANDS a place in our team.

These comments were found in about 2 minutes and there were plenty more. All go way beyond saying ‘he has talent but might not be able to cope with the physicality of men’s football’.

I think you have a point to degree. The first time I witnessed Lewis Travis playing in centre midfield for the under 23's under Johnson and Dunn he was so impressive and I knew we had player off alot of talent here and we need to bring him through to the first team. Which we now have and he is a key player for our club now

I saw Buckley play against Rochdale a couple of years back in preseason and said that he’s the most talented player at the club at the time, sometimes it’s obvious.

How many other 16 year olds has he gone public about? Phillips is undoubtedly a player with huge potential but I don't think it's right that Mowbray is already bigging him up to the world and his wife. In my view the lad needs to be able to develop without the pressure of the first team manager heaping huge praise on him.

That’s it. The way he’s gone about praising Phillips is a complete anomaly. If he signs a pro contract elsewhere I believe it will go to a tribunal, where we’ll be able to say ‘look how highly we rated him’, pointing at Mowbray’s comments etc.

Mowbray was offered Simeon Nwankwo (Simy) for 800k Euros in May, from Serie A relegated side Salernitana.

He is a 6'6" Nigerian centre forward, who was only a couple of goals behind Lukaku in goals scored in last seasons Serie A, playing in a team almost relegated at Christmas!

The only downside to 'the gurning one', was that he is 29 years old!

Not like we could have done with him or owt!.......go figure!

    Calling bullshit on that

Of course there is hardly any evidence because we don’t and haven’t played with wingers who can supply a cross whilst Mowbray plays a 6ft centre forward out wide! Put in the middle with good crosses and supply and the lad will score goals I am pretty confident on that

What makes you think the worst header of the ball at the club will score goals if we put crosses into him?

From a Rovers perspective, some of the most skilful players are the likes of Cowans, Tugay, Duff, Berkovic, none of these were physically big, all of them created their own time and space and they all delivered a killer pass/cross or two

Not saying they weren’t, I just took issue with a demonstrably untrue comment.

It's not highlights. Clips of every mistimed tackle, every missed header, every shot blazed over, every pass wayward, every yellow card given, every penalty conceded, EVERYTHING are available on these platforms. Sure on social media, highlights packages and fun clips of players scoring goals are going to do well and get shared for that reason, but if you spend an hour or two watching clips (positive and negative) on ONE player, you definitely know a bit about them.

It might not be the same as scouting a player in person, but you know what foot they use, what positions they pick up, what they're good at and not good at (in general).

I get the idea that data and video analysis isn't the same as watching a player week in week it, but surely you can see there's some value in watching clips of a player?

Where on earth are you watching two hour long videos of kids playing for City’s academy sides?

Not sure I agree fully. I take your points on his limitations, but he is growing into a leader, wins a lot of dirty stuff and he is passionate about the club and the fans. Losing him would be very bad imo. I think he's good enough to play for a team near the top.

Near the top of what? He’s a dreadful footballer.

Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Edit: That's probably what you meant. Keep the Armstrong fee relatively low and Obafemis price high but in reality based on our own valuations Obafemis price is lower than reported. If that makes sense 🙂

I presume if it was Armstrong for £15m + Obafemi we’d have to give Newcastle 40% of the market value of Obafemi. If we said Armstrong for £15m as a deal and Obafemi for £1 (as an example) as another deal, the Obafemi deal would be distinct from the Armstrong deal and his valuation wouldn’t come into it as far as Newcastle are concerned.
