I don’t disagree however difficult to call it a mistake yet. Phillips might really step up and prove he capable of handling this level.
I’d have thought the last thing Tomasson would want to do today is throw a 17 year old in for his proper debut!

Turns out starting the season with only two senior centre halves was a mistake, who’d have thought it?

That just isn't going to happen unfortunately. We couldn't keep two players who graduated from our own academy and another who didn't, who are good Championship players but no more than that for now. Why would we be able to convince a Chilean international star, coveted by numerous clubs, to sign on for far less money than he will get elsewhere and forego the fantastic signing on fee he will be eligible for next summer? Optimism is all well and good but it should be grounded in reality too.
The only scenario I can see it happening is in the fairly unlikely one that we get promoted this season. Even then, it relies on him not signing a pre-contract with a foreign club in January. We know some are looking.Because he’s on around 5k per week now and if we offer say 30k on a 4 year deal, he’ll be earning 25k more per week until the end of the season and has 4 years’ financial security in case of injury/loss of form etc., along with the benefit of going for a reduced fee at the end of the season. He’d have to think about it at least.

Brilliant. Here’s what happens next, alongside some story telling…
He signs a new 4-year contract on 40K a week with a 17M release fee. His contract is now worth £8,320,00.
He scores 10 goals by 20th Jan. Leeds are in the bottom three, 5 points from safety and Bamford gets injured. They immediately offer us the 17M and Ben goes.
We pay off his contract that we owe him and are left with 7.5M, of which Forest take their 10%. We now have 6.75M and Ben stands us at a loss in FFP, so we can’t sign a replacement.
Rovers pick up 4 points from 27 relying on Markanday to replace Ben. Furious, JDT walks. We hire Mowbray to steady the ship. You don’t half talk some nonsense

The 3rd keeper thing is exactly why reserve games should not take place a day before first team games.

Nope, he definitely wasn't better than Smallwood. Nothing will change my mind either.
Lowe is the worst footballer to ever play for Blackburn Rovers more than semi regularly and nothing will change my mind.

Oh no they are doing the weird thing of erasing how bad Buckley was last season overall and trying to convince others to drink the kool-aid. Another season of hearing how good poor performances are and how stunning decent performances are. All to save face. Yawn.
What the fuck is kool-aid?

Yes I'm buzzin too 😃 new exciting manager, a rare pretty much fully fit squad, square pegs in square holes regardles of which formation we go with... happy days
The foundations are looking good, sprinkle a few more signings in there over the next month 🎉
If you think Dolan as a centre forward is a square peg in a square hole can I please have some of what you’re smoking?

It will be 2.5m with all potential add ons etc included. Posh will brief their local journos that the fee is 2.5m and we’ll brief our locals that it’s (say) 1.5m.

Yeah it’s nonsense that we won’t get a sell on fee.

More likely to move for nothing in a years time.
I agree that’s the most likely option, however he would have to think about signing a new deal because
1) if he has a bad season this time, how much would a club be willing to give him next summer?
2) he’s one bad injury away from being worth nothing to anyone next summer, a guaranteed 30k+ per week for 4 years gives him financial stability
3) if he’s currently on say £8k per week (this might actually be over estimating his wage), a 30k per week contract would be giving him 22k per week extra that he wouldn’t otherwise get
He’d have to consider it.

Rovers wont sell BBD for under £20m. Either we get £20m for him in this window or he will stay.
If that’s the case we need to offer him a bumper contract that will make him the highest paid player at the club, which includes a non promotion release clause. He’d have to think about it as he definitely won’t be wanting another year on his current relatively meagre pay.

An excellent signing on the face of it, good age, lots of championship expereience and a real engine.
We may lose on the defensive front, but his end product in the final third will add much more than we've had since Emerton departed.
Think this is great business
From the bit I’ve read on him his final ball seems to be his biggest weakness

The govt; all foreign workers have to apply for a work permit/visa to ply their trade in the U.K. It’s based on a points make prizes system, unless you have a brown envelope for the relevant govt minister.
I don’t think that’s strictly true re the football industry

Who set the brexit footballer work permit rules, the FA or the government?

It’s a tough market to play the game SW and GB wants to. Pre Brexit would’ve been a lot easier…
But it’s not pre brexit, they were both brought in post brexit and are working under the exact same conditions that every other club in the country is working under.

Something ironic about the Cat 1 academy news coming out in the same day that we learn that we haven’t signed Phillips on a professional contact, almost makes you think what’s the point?

If Phillips does play, which I’m sure the vast majority on here would rather happen than Pickering being played there, would he play on the left or the right? Does anyone who’s watched the youth teams know if Phillips has played on the left before?
