I agree we shouldn't break it up whilst the partnership is working well.

I just have a hunch that Tony will be under pressure to play Tosin, and shoehorn him into the team like he has with Gallagher.

Let's face it, if Tosin doesn't start any games before Christmas, he'll be off back to City in a flash come January.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change of formation/system when Tosin is fit

Yeah, Wharton’s dined off a couple!

As an aside, tiny bit surprised Travis isn’t in the England under 21 squad. He can’t be too far off...although perhaps best he’s flying slightly under the radar for now.

Unfortunately for Trav There's a lot of very good u21 midfield players in the Prem who because of the clubs there at they are in front of him, if he was a fullback or centre half he would be in with a shout

To be fair Bennett and some of the other ‘senior pros’ have largely been second division journeymen, but I digress.

Fine with the rest of that. But why the need to do it in public?

We don't know what has gone on previously with Chapman but from what we know he was injured while in Austria how seriously only the club know this, but it happened early in the trip which by all accounts was a tough pre season meaning from the off he's behind the rest of the squad, he's played for the 23s and done OK but OK won't get you in the 1st team, it looks to me that Mowbray has had a word with him in private and its not working, then he has been asked a question by a reporter and he has given an honest answer, he isn't slagging Chapman off he is looking for a response from the lad, the ball is now in Chapmans Court, starting with u23s game at Brighton tonight

  4. Some young players need a kick up the arse, professional football can be a brutal workplace, no one hands you anything on a plate and young players need to understand your only as good as your last game, forget what you've done in the past it counts for nothing

But I would add with regards to the senior players the above isn't the case as they have earned the respect of Mowbray as they have carved a career at the highest level of the sport, and he trust them, Bennett, Graham, Johnson, Downing etc have seen it all, and they maintain a level of performance due to their experiance

there is nothing Mowbray can say to these players that will phase them and he knows it, so why would he risk losing the dressing room by trying to teach old dogs new tricks, he would lose his job

But I recon If he feels any of the senior players are starting to let him down he will bomb them out of the club as quickly as possible

It's obvious his approach to young and older players is different and in my opinion is right

by digging out the young players he's looking for a response, it's up to the player to provide it or be left behind

I thought we had unearthed a gem. With all the alleged interest from Top 6 PL Clubs for it to end so soon is disappointing. It will be interesting to see how the young lads career develops.

In all honesty he wasn't all that he was made out to be Jack Vale is far better

I think the talk about other clubs being interested was to try and force Rovers into offering a contract, it was just agents doing what agents do

Anyone else think Butterworth should really be going out on loan? He is being described as being on the fringes of the first team, but realistically there are too many bodies in front of him at the moment for him to get more than a token cameo or two throughout the season.

Unless I'm mistaken he can play...

Up front - competition being Graham, Gally, Armstrong, Brereton, even Samuel is likely to be given a chance by Tony there first when he is back.

The Dack role - against Dack, Rothwell, Buckley, Downing apparently, and I'm sure most of the strikers would be given a shot there ahead of him if it came to it.

The wide attacking roles - against Armstrong, Downing, Brereton, Gallagher, Samuel (lol), Buckley, Rothwell, Chapman.

I'm probably forgetting a player or two as we have so damned many in those areas. Can't see what will be achieved by keeping him around when he won't get a look in and we don't need the bodies for depth.

There are 3 young players who won't be going anywhere and one is Butterworth the other 2 are Buckley and JRC, they are expected to try and break into the 1st team, but for this to happen they will need a chance, will they get it? Time will tell

The selection will say a lot about the future direction on the U23s - and Mowbray’s view of it.

Another Ben Benson and it’s curtains. A credible appointment - an ambitious ex player or experienced development coach - and maybe it still has an important part of our future. Surely Venkys won’t let their investment be wasted.

Billy Barr...to be promoted he Is very much front runner apparently

No he isn't.  He's not a right back. Nyambe is so much better defensively and going forward. Nyambe runs at defenders, bennet turns back as he has no strength to get past. Mowbray should hang his head at the ignorance of nyambe, in my opinion one of our only proper defensive minded players. International too for christ sake.

Yeah like I said a proper right back, a defender who defends well, but please tell me how many goals he's scored and how many assist Nyambe has from right back? seeing as he's great at getting forward

Oh I forgot "for Christ's sake'

Cheers Skip. Any idea if we gave them a closer game than the scoreline might suggest, standout performers or injuries? Any sign of Samuel or Williams?

    Sorry for the bombardment!

I know the game was organised more for united than Rovers, it was 3-0 at halftime, 2nd half a raft of changes for Rovers with some other u23s getting a run, the only players to get 90 mins were Nyambe, JRC and Vale for Rovers

An U23 team featuring Lutwieler, Nyambe, Magloire, Grayson, Rankin-Costello, Evans, Vale, Smallwood, Chapman, Buckley and Brereton were on the wrong side of a 4 nil drubbing at the hands of a Manchester United U23 (behind closed doors friendly) team today.

The United team featured Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard (2 goals), Mason Greenwood (1 goal), Tahiti Chong (1 goal), Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian and Axel Tuanzebe.

The only 2 in the United team who could be classed as u23 are Greenwood and Chong

Also Gomez who came on 2nd half

They also included Jones, Smalling and Darlot who've been missed off

Would it be completely mad to include Costello at right back? Didn’t he play there well in pre season. Saying that don’t think Tony has the balls to try him.

It would do no harm, I hear a lot of posters saying gat Nyambe in he's a right back, Bennett isn't blah blah blah

What a lot seem to miss is how different as players Nyambe and Bennett are, if you want a right back who is a decent defender but gets a nose bleed if he ventures over half way, Nyambe is your man (this is why I see his future at centre half)

If you want a right back who can get forward but who will get found out defensively  now and again but should create chances and offer that extra bod in the last 3rd Bennett is your man

Now if you want a hybrid of the 2

Rankin Costello is ideal, he will get caught out defensively now and again but Id bet a pound to a pinch of shit he will create chances and offer a threat in the last 3rd and he can defend

You got 1/2 right, although to be fair most of us predicted Mowbray wouldn't start Rothwell. It seemed like an inevitability that the one player the fans were most excited about would sit on his arse for 70 minutes watching the manager's favourites labour through yet another unimpressive performance. There was no excuse for him to be on the bench today, but going forward he simply must start. If he's still being used as backup/rotation by the time January rolls round he needs to be looking for a move, because he will be wasting his time here.

I agree about Rothwell he's at the stage where being a bit part player is stunting his development, there isn't enough young legs in that starting 11 in important areas, I watched the game today and thought it was to slow in the build up, I would give the young lads a go and see how it went as after watching today to many of the old guard when the chips are down go through the motions

Oh and I did get the starting 11 right?

There is a game tomorrow behind closed doors at United, it will be interesting to see how that goes as it will contain those who didn't play today and thosse not involved

Southport seem to do very well off our arrangement with them (we still play our u-23 games there right?). They get to keep tabs easily on our lads and probably get first dibs on the lesser ones we let go, with them being comfortable with the surroundings etc.

Interesting to hear about a 'lack of end product' from Chapman...I don't expect him to be delivering goals and assists all game. An assist and hit the bar in this one and 2 goals in the previous wasn't it? Sounds like enough end product for me. However I'm sure he won't get as many breaks at Championship level so if he isn't consistent with the end product it could be an issue in the first team. Sounds like Arma really. Electric and unplayable at his best, but little more than a nuisance (and an outlet to stretch play) when he isn't. I think our fans are harsh on Arma personally.

The u23s play at Leyland  (Lancashire FA) and before that it was Leigh Sports Village ?

Not that you'll see many youngsters on Saturday versus Charlton.?

Maybe not but it's not about next week it's about the season, TM now is aware that he has a decent group of young players coming through, who he can trust..... The big word is trust, he knows that when called up on JRC, Buckley, Butterworth etc etc won't let him down, if any young player can be involved 5/6 times off the bench from now until Christmas, that for me is a result, they can suplement game time with the u23s at the highest level available, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal etc and if they cant break in and everything is going great for the team, then come January the loan market will become attractive to the youngsters and as TM says that can then be looked at
