This Buckley sounds class, I reckon we should sign him.

I dont agree with the idea of targets that graduates should play x minutes in general. Nothing like that shouls be a target as it causes conflict in the sole purpose of picking a team every week that is best suited to winning that game.
I doubt that is anything but a “soft target”. If JDT gets the boot for playing the wrong players I’ll concede I was wrong, but I don’t see that happening.
Remains the case that we need the academy to produce a return on investment, and it is a huge advantage we uniquely have in this league to edge toward self sustainability.
I just don’t think saying “Rovers have played a lot of academy players, this should be encouraged and continue” is as nefarious or unambitious as you state - it’s just the right way to go.

My favourite thing about the gaffer is the way he says “everybody”, and that it sounds like someone from Rovers put space echo on it

Why is that the alternative?! There is never any middle ground.
Well I’m using hyperbole to illustrate my point.
Similarly, I don’t think anyone from the club has said “our only aim is to give minutes to academy players” but it’s in the post I’m replying to.

An extreme example, as he was a top class manager, but remember when Wenger refused to properly replace Vieira, Henry and Co because he "didn't want to block the pathway of the youngsters"? They persisted with those youngsters and went to shit (relative to their ambitions) and have been floundering for 18 years without a league title.
In our case, we've been floundering for 12 years and look set to add a few more to that as Broughton feeds us some guff about a youth project and "measures of success".
I'm not convinced that any of this lot (aside from JDT, maybe) are serious about promotion. It looks like it is all about developing kids, getting them minutes and hoping to sell them on for big fees further down the line.
You only have to read/listen to Broughton's spiel to understand what he sees as success.
One of the first things he said when he arrived was that Rovers would have to overachieve to make it to the Premier League. Inspirational stuff and exactly what you want to hear.
Next, he talked about how almost 40 percent of the minutes played by the Rovers squad last season were from Academy players, and how that needed to be maintained this season. Why? Is the aim to win football matches and try and go up or to give minutes to youngsters and crow about how many first teamers are from the Academy?
On a podcast about his time at Bodo, he talks about how one of the ways of measuring success was by looking at the 'R number' of the Football Club. That is done at any stage, over a five year average, by looking at how many young players from the Academy are in the first team. The more, the better, for the 'R number'. What a load of bollocks! I thought football was about trying to be the best, though? I've obviously had it wrong for all of these years.
Just like the 40 percent quote about the Rovers first team, he proudly mentioned how Bodo had 35 percent of their first team made up of North Norwegians from their Academy. This guy will do stuff all, IMO, and won't help us to get promoted. As long as the youngsters are getting game time, it's all good.
Bear in mind, he turned up at Luton when they had just finished outside the play offs in the Championship. They went on to suffer three successive relegations whilst he was there. Not saying it was all on him, clearly. However, in his own words, he had the autonomy to implement the vision of the Academy. Three relegations. Yet he takes the fact that youngsters got first team football and brought increased financial value to the club as plusses. Three relegations, but the above are positives. That should serve as a warning sign, in my opinion.
We missed out on Anel, Davies, many of us are after Van Hecke and another quality defender. Will he want to 'block the pathway' for Carter and Phillips by bringing in a couple of quality defenders? I highly doubt it. I'm expecting another cheap loan back there.
Our DoF would do well to remember what Alan Hansen said, and it still applies today 27 years on:
"You can't win anything with kids".
Personally, I think it’s a good thing that our DOF is talking about a strategy that will make the most of our excellent existing resources and provide a healthy and sustainable model for a club of our size going forwards.
Last thing I wanted to hear was “we’re gonna invest millions into established players we can’t really afford, roll the dice and hope we go up to pay for it”
Our advantage in this league IS the academy. It has to be the main focus of the direction we go in.

He said when he came he wants a better team spirit than everybody else and wants us to work harder than everybody else.
I’m not sure pissing off or shipping out Bradley Dack would be the best way to achieve that.
Seems very popular and a good laugh in the dressing room, and one of the few senior players we have.
It was the first game. Let’s not panic yet.

I admire your optimism, but on checking, I found that the current average attendance in the WSL is around 2,200. In the Championship, the average attendance is 410.
I'm sure there will be an improvement following the tremendous success this weekend but the game as it stands has been funded massively over recent years but they are some way off stadiums for club matches.
A lot of them play in the arse end of nowhere and are poorly marketed.
Sharing the “identity” of the men’s side, where the clubs fans are used to going, could really boost the profile and eventually become a decent revenue stream.

Morton has me very underwhelmed to be honest, but then so did van Hecke and Khadra.
But it really felt like Wharton and Garrett were close to proving themselves, now we get to develop another player once .
Can understand the thinking from Broughton's comments - if we'd signed someone older on a permanent contract, they would get in the way of our young lads. JDT must be pretty confident in their ability going forwards.
Looks a good player this lad - hopefully more Elliott and less of a Clarkson.

Absolutely delighted. IT CAME HOME!
What a fantastic tournament it's been, chuffed that so many people have seen how far it's come on in the last 10-15 years - genuinely entertaining games of graft and physicality with loads of skill and passion.
Tugay wears Keira Walsh pyjamas, and if we had Mary Earps in goal instead of Jason Steele we probably wouldn't have gone down.
This is the beginning of a new era in the women's game, really excited to see how good it's going to get.
Thousands of young girls can wake up today dreaming about being superstar footballers, just like we all did.
Next step imo - get the club teams to play at the same grounds as the men.

Huge call starting Vale and Hedges tbh. I didn't see Hedges as the type that fitted with the high press, high energy/intensity game plan?
Dunno he’s nippy and runs his bollocks off

Already making us look very light at CB with just one out.
Still, looks a good side.

Excited for this one today - hoping to see a new, and hopefully effective, approach but prepared for it to take a few games for the boss to get things really moving.
(these boards tend to show that Rovers fans have always had an infinite capacity for pessimism, negativity and misery - probably a local trait - but it eventually wears off when you live away from the area for a long time....)
I think they show we can have those traits, but can also flip to wildly optimistic and delirious with joy after a good win or run of results.
Like any football fans in the world, ever.

Surely the isn't just to get anyone in, that has been the key point of those dismissing worries that we haven't got players in before the season?
If people have genuine about the value of a player or indeed of , being worried about not getting most of our business done before the season doesn't eliminate those issues.
It isn't OR timeliness.
Personally I don't know enough of him to write him off yet. Just tickled me a little.

Got to laugh. Page upon page of "we need players asap", then it looks like we're signing one and it's "that's too much money, hard pass"

A final at Wembley vs. Germany then, doesn't get much bigger than that.
Bright vs Popp should be some battle, and whoever wins that likely wins the game.
Germany are a good side, but I think we'd have fared worse against the pace and intensity of Diani etc.

The real standout and the key to England’s success for me is Keira Walsh.
Tugay-esque. Everything goes through her, and little gets past her.
Rovers heritage always helps a player.

So who would we prefer in the final.?
White taking a fair bit of stick tonight, unfairly IMHO as she's done well.
Milly Bright player of the tournament so far for me.
Good luck in the final girls... Every one of you deserves it.
Surely Germany. But either team will be massively tough, France can be lethal.
England have the momentum though, hopefully that’s enough to help them over the line.

White won't get a kick v Reynard etc. It's plain to see she's too slow...I think she's playing because of sentimental reasons rather than merit
Yeah I know what you’re saying. I really rate Russo too, she’s got the lot.
Just don’t see her being dropped for the final after starting the rest.
Ellen does a job, she’ll scrap and beat them up a bit, could give us a bit of a foothold in the game.

I can understand the argument with dropping White.
But she’s still class, a presence up top, and it’s a big call to change the starting team that got you to the final.
The Russo goal was filthy though, sheer quality.

The Ladies certainly put the effort in and there is no shortage of skill and technique.
Sweden looked decent first half and dominated the physical side of the game and should have scored at least 1. England destroyed them in the second although I would fault the keeper on the 2nd and 4th.
It is much slower than the men's game but enjoyable just the same.
I am sure that most of the over 28k who attended would agree.
Absolutely class. Bouncing down Bramall Lane on the way out.
The women’s game is gonna be huge. It’s different yeah, but it’s still quality football. Imagine how good it’s gonna be with another 10 years of professionalism behind it.
Roll on Sunday.
IT’S COMING HOME
