If you do them club-wide, sure. On one player? Nah not so much. It would be a drop in the ocean, and absolutely isn't worth the EFL scrutinising the deal. Assuming this is what's even meant by this relegation clause speculation, and assuming there is anything in what Nicko said in the first place.

Look I’m just spitballing the hypotheticals, I’ve no idea what’s gone on, how it all works or how on top of the contract situation we actually were.

But if the question was - “It says here lads that you could be in League One having committed over 50% of your gate receipts to a single midfielder, sure that’s right?” then I’m bloody glad someone was asking.

It would fuck the whole wage structure and cripple the club etc etc etc

There‘s obviously some things that needed clearing up in the obligatory contract.

Perhaps we have the necessary foresight and right kind of professionals to broker that kind of deal.

Maybe the EFL have just saved our arses.

    Doubt we’ll ever know.

If pushed I could take a guess.

edit- reminder I’ve pulled this scenario out of my arse. Just trying to make sense of it.

Personally I'm not sure why we didn't insert a clause specifying what we would do if we got promoted but the player showed up to the celebrations in ripped jeans, if we didn't go up but Steve Waggott's shares in Tesco rose by 23.42 percent, or if we got relegated but the star Betelgeuse went supernova.

Frankly, I think it's a dereliction of duty for the EFL to not ask questions like these.

(On a more serious note, who gives a fuck if we went up, signed a player on 65k p/w then got relegated? We'd have £170 fucking million in the coffers!)

I’d give a fuck. No relegation clauses are a fast track to Portsmouth-ville. Or worse.

  3. To elaborate: in the highly hypothetical scenario we did go up, then signed him on a PL contract for 3 years… but then came back down - we’d be under the jurisdiction of the EFL again.

Did we explain to them (or even know ourselves) what we intended to pay him and what his contract would look like after those two seasons? What about if we double dropped?

It’s a highly complicated signing with all these clauses.

With the last minute nature of it (and the personnel we have in place) I’m not wholly confident we’d have been on top of the legals at any point in the process.

”If we were relegated” is a nice way to dance around these questions too.

Are they not just asking if there was a relegation clause in his wages as well ?

Perfectly entitled to do that in regards to a club who have been in some sort of embargo twice in the last 8 years.

    Fair point.

Did we fully flesh out what the contract situation looked like after May and beyond in all the relevant scenarios?

Can’t fax the back of a fag packet.

I think we’ve established that they’d miss it anyway. Problem is, I’d get really frustrated and really have a massive go. Sorry for any forum members reading this too, I’m just all over the place with the most recent news. What an absolute shambles.

I think that’s exactly what you should do.

Some comments from the Lancashire Telegraph reckon JDTs not good enough and the clubs a shambles. When was the last time Blackburn Rovers went through to the 5th round  of both FA and Caribou (league cup) , besides this there still in the top 6 in the Championship. And JDTs still to bring his own players in.

JDT’s good enough. But the club is a shambles.

Where does this leave Brierley ? The look on that photograph says “ What have I done !”

They haven’t wanted to announce it because everyone would kick off. A full window and we managed to snag a youth prospect for the u23s from league 2.

Not fair on the lad! Just sneak him in the back door, hope he does well.

Then its the fault at Rovers end for taking too long in negotiations.  Its probably 50/50 regards outcome.  If there's potential ramifications should Rovers go up then they should walk away from the deal but Rovers going up is as likely as me bedding Taylor swift

50/50 is optimistic in my view. I’d be shocked if it went through.

It’s an absolute shitshow. What an incredibly costly fuck up.

But now we are in them, we don’t fancy it? Must be the only club in the country that thinks that way and it’s pathetic.

It's an aside by Rich Sharpe isn't it? Not a club statement! Looks like we've failed with some money bids (say what you want about that), so why is everyone taking this as gospel?

I know what the problem is and hopefully everyone else does too but Tomasson and Broughton are complicit by talking about a three Summer transfer window project. That is where my objection is. This is football and there are more variables than any other business making it extremely difficult to make and plans. Unless you are a mega rich Premier League club then I believe it's too difficult to plan for the next few months never mind years.

I remember our squad in preseason when they came in and think 3 windows was a fairly optimistic statement tbh.

Loses his awkward cult hero status if he leaves on a free, surely.

From a “cult hero” status, I’d much rather see him leaving and playing in La Liga with our best wishes than take 3m or whatever and see him playing for a Bournemouth or Forest.

Not his fault we ballsed the contract, he’s always given his all and it’s a great opportunity for the lad.

Plus he gets to fire us to playoff victory in the meantime.

Yet again nobody mentioned promotion and it's bizarre you keep bringing it up. JDT has told you it's a project and Broughton has told you it's about increasing squad value.

There is simply no getting away from the fact that for at least the tenth time this season so far that was abject clueless rubbish that once that first goal went in was only going to end one way.

Despite league position there have been far more red flags this season than green shoots, another 12 months of this project and i'm seriously worrying.

Another 12 months is a different story.

With all of the issues with the club though,  if “nobody is mentioning promotion” what does sacking the manager actually achieve?

You genuinely believe you can predict he’ll take us down next season and it’s all his fault?
