Cannot but help think Mowbray is storing up trouble for the club in the years ahead. Johnson is 32, Downing 34/35, both past their sell-by date, Darlow at 28 is not old for a keeper but not young either.  Ageing squads suddenly need wholesale restructuring as these players lose it,  and we have enough older players on the books already. I hope we have some very good youth players coming through, because these old legs will need the youngsters to do the running for them. Ideally, we should be signing quality players in the 24-26 age bracket, people like Harrison Reed for instance.

I personally disagree here, we have plenty of young heads in the squad already and bar rodwell our recruitment has only been u25's for a while. Be it your chapman's, davenport's or Brereton's, along with a strong u23 squad.

I feel it's right we are looking for experience and the calm heads that brings. Granted Downing maybe a little too far on that scale. Bringing in young players seems to only give Mowbray an excuse not to play them. Plus quality 24-26 Year olds are more expensive.

Replace one ginger ninja with another, don’t think Colback would be a terrible addition but we need two new defenders before anything else. The thought of Bell at left back and Williams/Mulgrew at centre half in the starting line up this season makes me want too projectile vomit.

Don't worry if we sign Colback i'd very much expect him to be square pegged into a round hole at Left back!

  3. I think today states the clubs ambitions for the season.

That said I'm not annoyed, we could have thrown the dice today buy some quality and given us a better chance to reach the lottery of play-offs.

The counter to that would have possibly gearing ourselves too high and cause damage for seasons to come when we ultimately failed to get promoted. Similar to Sheffield Wednesday last few seasons.

Had we been fighting top 2 I'm sure we'd have seen some investment today. I gather if TM really wanted someone he could have got BA or CA, he'd rather get the right players at the right time then the wrong players quickly.

In the ifollow interview Mowbray seemed to flip flop a lot. Certainly seemed to have changed his mind from months to a few weeks.

Most of it is down to Harry now, but I expect he’ll have a decent cameo in the run in.

I'm guessing a similar treatment to Rodwell.

Don't think we'll see him in the squad till mid-March.

Once he makes the squad TM will deny he'll possibly come on any time soon, only for him to belt in a 90th minute winner against Aston Villa.

  5. Out of the three the only one I see happening is Sam Gallagher:

TM has always valued (rightly or wrongly) Team Spirit over Player Quality.

As a result we won't sanction a deal that will break our wage structure, in fact breaking it in such a way will prove more expensive then buying the player itself. The likes of BD, mulgrew etc will all expect similar wage bumps.

For preference i'd rather BA over CA; I'd rather a player wanting to make it to the premiership over one on his way down.

However i'm in the camp Sam could be a long run successor for Danny Graham; similar player with more physicality but less intelligence which will come with age. Also helps TM and senior players already knows him personally. That said I don't see the point loaning him i'd want him here full time.

  6. I'd have taken 4 points from leeds, Swansea, west Brom. So overall decent week.

Injuries are a concern, but with this team i think it's one warrior out another one put in.

It's  joy to be a rovers fan for the first time in 10 years.

While there's no such thing as n easy game the fixture list does look a little less daunting for the coming weeks.

First and foremost we need to edge to 50 points. Any luck we may be there btly March

I don't think he would have to fail all that spectacularly to not be trading hands for 8 million again. It's a lot of money. He would only have to show he was below average or not develop much further and we would make a significant loss.

Get what you mean, if it's a failure of a number of seasons we'd lose a lot. But if we cut ties after one season having only scored 5-6 goals having started 25+ games (similar to Dominic Samuel last year) i'd still expect us to recoup most the fee. It's certainly less of a potential loss then spending 8m on a 28 year old who fails. Granted less likely to be a failure if you're buying someone with a track record.

Anyway, point of my original message was i wouldn't buy him.

  8. it's all strange.

it feels like a luxury buy from a team who already has it all not a buy from someone who's biggest buy has been 750k for the last 3-4 years.

My only knowledge of the player is buying him on fifa this year, did very well though ?.

I don't think anyone would be upset for him to sign, he's clearly a prospect, who'd have to fail miserably for us not to at least recoup our outlay. But the opportunity cost of buying him would rightly annoy many. we could buy 4 first team players for the cash.

Or are venky starting something and is this a start of a big project where we will be spending like this every window (unlikely)

Agreed. Hence my comparison which people laughed at a few weeks ago of offering 1m for Messi.

If Charlton want £2m for the player you'd imagine our opening gambit would have to be in the order of £1m with a view to hopefully landing him for maybe something like £1.25m plus some add ons.

Otherwise We're just wasting ours and Charlton's time instead of pursuing targets we might have a chance of landing.

A laughable bid was when shef wednesday offered 100k for mulgrew last year!

My opinion is 5-600k is right for a CB with 12 months left in league one, 300k isn't a bad starting point.

If Charlton won't play ball we'll just play the long game like we did with Rothwell and maybe just loan a cb this year.

  10. I get the Lowe talk,

When we signed Smallwood most of us thought he was the next Lowe just as Keith Andrews before hand.

The reality is Smallwood is a cracking player. Potentially best defensive minded midfielder since our PL days. Let's not bring this thread to such a Lowe Standard
