I don’t recall it being a complete failure? I remember it being ineffective at times, useful at others. Similar to how we played 4231 and 442 times and it looked useless - ie Oldham away.

Was certainly useless against Southend on opening day, switched it at half time if I recall!

I don't think Mowbray will start the season with wingers, so I doubt there is any panic in his mind to get any wide players over the line at the moment.

Of course when we get stuffed in our first 2/3 games of the season because of his insistence at playing that horrible 3-5-2 formation, things will probably change and we'll look at getting in a couple on loan before the deadline.

Looking at the squad now I agree we will be back to 3-5-2.

    So:

    Raya

    Lenihan NEW Mulgrew

    Bennett——————Bell

     Rothwell——Smallwood

    —————Dack—————-

    ———NEW———NEW——-

You have Williams, Nyambe, Travis who can all play a couple of positions off the bench for you, Bennett can play RWB or CM. Evans and Whittingham depth for  CM, and Gladwin can be Dacks back up.

So expect a Centre Back like Bauer or the boy Hector from Chelsea.

Then 2 strikers. Hopefully one with power and strength like a Gestede type and then a quicker Armstrong type.

Would love Lucas Joao back on a permanent and Thierry Anbrose on loan from City.

Throw in a real quality Centre Midfielder and get rid of Evans or Whittingham and you have the 4 New Signings I think we need.

Your post was reasonable enough until the last paragraph. Performances most of the time were poor? We wouldn't have been promoted if that was the case. Plain and simple.

I missed two games last year out of 46. We were poor in most, no point sugar coating it. We had a couple of players that had no business being in the league, namely Dack, Raya and Mulgrew.

We need to improve a lot before this season kicks off.

Have to disagree. This is a better team to the one that was relegated, that’s before any signings- imo obviously.

Id understand that many would disagree but from the performances I’ve watched, and Tony’s influence - even statistically when he inherited a rock bottom broken team from Coyle - even with only a couple of loan replacements, we are a better “team” than that imo.

A lot of that comes from spirit, character and organisation, and obviously id like to see us further up than just merely surviving but I think we are in a better starting point than a few others might.

Yeah I started off saying the 'we are better than the squad we got relegated with' claptrap too, but now I'm starting to get more worried, and the statement carries less and less weight.

The team your comparing it too, was two years ago to the day, and money has been pissing into the division since then, the division has gotten stronger. It's not a fair comparison.

As pleasing as last season was, our performances most of the time were quite poor, but for a solid back line and Raya, and touches of quality we were poor for most of the season. After what happened last time in the championship, along with people like Conway getting retained, I am fearful that we are not going to be good enough.

Some interesting and potentially viable players released by Premier League clubs this summer. Just wondering what people think of the following?

    •  Tim Krul, available on a free after being released by Brighton and Hove Albion. Better than Fielding surely?
    • Lee Chung-yong, available on a free after being released by Crystal Palace. South Korea International and different to what we have.
    • Joel Ward, also available on a free after being released by Crystal Palace. Defender and defensive midfielder. Good age and played 185 games over the last 6 seasons.

    Would take all three

That wish list added up to £6.5 million. I'd be amazed if we have half of that to spend half.

That will be middle of the pack championship spending this transfer window, which is the impression I got from Mowbrays and Wagotts post trip comments. Slightly ambitious but the right age of these players cost money, Mowbray will have sold them on resell value, whilst also giving us a shot at top half/playoffs.

If they are only planning on spending 1-2m, expect another relegation battle I’m afraid.

The Venkys have been pouring money into the club for a long time, by all accounts the finances have leveled off, and we have cleaned house. Maybe just maybe they could stretch a meager “speculate to accumulate” transfer budget of 6.5m.

I’m aware this type of optimism/hope is discouraged on the this forum.

Funnily enough Id say in Lenihan we have a dominant centre half, and in Bennett and Nyambe decent right full back options. Obviously in a perfect world we'd want better, but I don't see them as the major issues at the moment.

Raya, Mulgrew, Graham all good enough for next season imo. Not convinced with Smallwood. Think he's missing the required quality.

So for me the big areas to strengthen are :

    1) one quick goal scoring striker (Armstrong if we can get him)

    2) two wide players with pace and quality delivery

    3) one top holding midfielder. Be a bonus if he can pass well.

Other than that need a more depth across the squad, but not starting roles.

    1. Armstrong 1.5m

    2. Chapman 1m + Sacko 500k

    3. McGinn 3.5m

All 4 under 24 with resell value.

Need a striker, centre mid, centre half and a winger all on loan. Brandon Barker(Winger)and Jacob Davenport(Cente Mid) from City?

Thats if the India trip went well.

  8. Bloody hell this forum is being over run by us Scottish.

Everytime someone says Nyambe isnt good enough for the championship, I cringe.

Did you actually watch last season? He was excellent before his injury, and at 20 years old, he is hot prospect for us and a vital piece of our future. Best athlete in the team, needs to get better going forward.
