  1. It really was a special occassion-I arrived at 1:15 and was just able to get one of the extra seats already put out.

More people arrived after, with a large influx after the coffin was brought in; all these people were encouraged to go to the front of the Cathedral. I couldn't see how full it was but I speculate that the Cathedral was full.

Ronnie's grand-daughter did extremely well with her tribute until the very end, when her voice quavered.

I'm sure that each member of the congregation had their own private memory of the great man.

And although very humble, that is what he was.

Of the current squad, the players I saw emerge-I was able to leave by a side door and as a result had a good view-were Nelsen, Samba, Dunn, Jones, I think Emerton and Andrews.

Dave Whelan left the Cathedral in tears.

  2. When I said 'I was there' that was the City game with apparently 42000 on in 67. I was responding to Jim's comments about Whittle Blues piccy of the Lpool match in 58 and the match in 1929 and wondering how so many could get into Ewood. I gave a bigger Blackburn End 'mound' before the stand was built as a possibility.

    Does that make more sense?

Both you-and hence my previous posting-and Philip refer to it as the Blackburn Stand, whereas I always think of it as the Blackburn end.

I thought a Stand had seats?

As in Nuttall Street Stand etc.

  3. I was there that night and I've always wondered how many more could have squeezed on. It was ram jam full. However I may be wrong but I seem to think that the Blackburn End stand might not have been built in 58. Building that would prob have reduced capacity somewhat.

You might want to check what you wrote about the Blackburn End stand.

The roof went on the stand after the 1960 cup run, from what I remember.

  4. My first reaction was OMG.

A real hero-I hope the site pays a real tribute to him.

Before the Nuttall Street stand was re-built, he used to come back after half-time with a small meat pie for the lads!!

  5. I remember him at Ewood in 1974 when we were going for promotion and Palace were our rivals. Peter Taylor was mugged in the penalty area in the last few minutes and a stone-wall pen wasn't given. Allison was practically on the pitch he was so enraged, crowd hurling abuse at him, fantastic atmosphere and we hung on for a lucky draw. I think over 17000 there but could be wrong.

Couldn't cut it at City when he made some bewildering buys but a great character. RIP.

13,623 for the home match-more than 17,000 for the away game.

  6. How could he not get as much as he expected? He did actually look at the contract before signing it, didn't he?

The impression I got, from his reaction after he left, was that he had been promised more than he actually received.

  7. I think it was speculated that Tottenham were giving him £38k p/w. Bearing in mind this was 1997/1998! If I remember, Martin Dahlin was on £20k p/w and was one of our highest paid players at the time.

I don't remember hearing any rumours that he was unhappy what Davies was being paid, though. I think it was the strictness of Roy that got to the "I know better" types.

What I remember was that Sherwood was over the moon about the idea for signing for them......until after he had signed and then there were some comments suggesting he wasn't getting as much as he had expected.

Sherwood was very disparaging about Davies and there were rumours it was connected to a disparity of pay.

I could, of course, be wrong.

  8. Wasn't he the one that led a dressing room revolt against Roy? If so then we should have sold him earlier than we did. :o

I thought Sherwood was a main instigator-unhappy with the amount of money Davies was being paid compared to him- and that was one of the reasons he left to go to Tottenham.

Then he found his contract was not as good as he expected and though not overly complimentary to us, referred to as proper football club compared with Spurs.

  9. As a born and bred Darrener and Indian food lover, Sukhis is the best. No question about it try all three if you like and find that I am correct. YUM

I'm going to speak up for the Anaz as I've been a patron since it first opened.

The vast majority of meals I have had have been excellent, although the chef seems to go on holidays every year and then the standard drops.

I have been in the other 2 and have always been disappointed.

I also quite like the Bukharra, the original East Z East in Manchester and I had a wonderful trio of desserts in the Quillon in London.

More locally, the restaurant/cafe near the Barbara Castle end of Whalley Range is really quite good.

  10. Went on your recommendation 'drog.

Quantity is such that at least half the tables including me took doggy bags.

The clothing worn by the clientelle was colourful to say the least. Plenty of Rovers shirts whilst the Asian ladies present ran the gammut from burkahs through head scarves to glorious sahris to casual sort and jeans to microskirts.

Incidentally being non-alcholic makes it extremely safe for driving, a great chance to drink a superb mango lashi (sp?) and keeps the price right down.

    Lassi.

  11. I'm amazed to see Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah is the Christmas number two...obviously not happy that the X-Factor's version has beaten it to number one, but still...it's rare for such a great song to get anywhere near the charts, especially at Christmas when it's generally filled with novelty crap.

It inspired me to listen to the album 'Grace' again, I haven't heard it for years and kind of forgot how good it was...especially this song.

I really enjoyed the Grace album.

I was also a fan of his father, Tim.
