  1. Dillo,

I think I'm falling in love with you. As are probably many other who post on here. Why a woman from Japan decided to like Blackburn?

Rovers is your decision, but you have done it so you'll just have to live with it.

They are not really our rivals. Just a few Rovers suporters who are too aggressive for their own good think that they are out local rivals.

    They are not really.

OK, you've got the answer to that one. Lilly Savage

Now this is a strange and difficult question to answer. I've lived in Manchester for 30 years. It's about 50km south of Blackburn, but everyone here speaks differently. When I go back to Blackburn everyone seems to me to speak differently. Here in Manchester everyone thinks I speak with a Blackburn accent.

50km to the west of here is Liverpool and they all talk different there. It is just local accents. If you go 200km south you will meet another accent, and they will use different words

You can look "Accrington Stanley " up on the internet. Most of us are quite pleased that Accrington Stanley have got promoted and back into the football league. Some of us with longer memories will remember that Accrington were forced into insolvency( english law for having no money) by Burnley FC. Which is why some of us quite like Accringon Stanley & do not like Burnley. It was 35 years ago.

    Actually, it's 45 years ago!

  2. I can't remember the exact figures that were being bandied around at the time, and in truth I don't believe anybody outside of the Rovers themselves ever knew. However when the Rovers were given their allocation by the FA the figure that appeared in the press was around 30,000 for each of the two clubs and the rest for distribution by the FA to member clubs. Allowing for the expected allocation of tickets (say a dozen or so) to every member of the Rovers staff including players (which we believed was the norm) this should have meant over 29,000 for sale to the public with ST holders getting first choice, and then the rest going on open sale. I can only speak for my own circle of friends and family that were all die-hard fans (about 15) then including workmates ( another 50 or so). Out of those I only heard of ONE person that actually got a ticket. This was my brother-in -law who got one ticket that he WON in a raffle at the YMCA where he was a player for the football team. I never actually met anybody else that got one. Where did they all go? You tell me!

The rumour was that the players were openly selling them in the town centre-presumably for more than their nominal price and this double-whammy also upset a lot of fans who vowed never to return.

  3. You advocated continuity and stability within a squad but it's well known that we were in pole position to sign Zidane and Dugarry in the summer of 95, but it was blocked by Jack Walker himself and they ended up at Juve. Apparently JW wanted to display loyalty to the players that won the Prem the season before. If we had bought those two I'd guess Wilcox and Atkins would have been shown the exit door pdq. People would have railed against that decision but we all know that it would have been the way forward big time. Rem also the summer that we were promoted many people criticised KMD for replacing the excellent David Speedie with some raw kid from Soton called Alan Shearer!

If you stand still in football you invariably go backwards.

It's not the way I remember it-although that doesn't mean I am correct. What I remember was at the end of 94/5 we were linked with a double signing of Macateer and Stubbs from Bolton, that Liverpool came in for Jason and we only wanted to do the signing as long as we could sign both, so a combination of that and Uncle Jack not wanting to make major signings meant we didn't build on the success.

What I remember about the following season was that Ray Harford started looking at Zidane and ended up being more impressed by Dugarry but by the time he got involved in trying to do anything about it, they had both been signed up by an Italian team. When he became interested in Ronaldo, he found Barcelona had already done a deal to sign him.

  4. There's just been a nice little clip of Pearce on Sky Sports which sounds far less angry than what was reported in written press. He basically said:

"If he goes and has a fantastic season next year and makes the full squad for Euro 2008 then next time he bumps into me he can say 'I was right'".

Edit: Having said that, Merson is now saying what a stupid decision it was and that he'll have to have an absolutely outstanding season to have any chance of playing in the full squad. Peter Taylor isn't impressed either. Bentley has made a huge cock-up by the sound of it, there isn't one person involved with football that has said it was definitely the right decision for his career.

It's not surprising that Taylor was critical as I am pretty sure Taylor had dropped him from the squad when he was manager. It was Pearce who recalled him.

  5. Lee Hughes should have served a hell of a lot longer in jail without doubt. However, once a man is freed he should , within reason, be allowed to coninue working like anyone else. He's done his time and completed his punishment.

If Lee Hughes is now officially 'free' then he should be allowed to continue working, be it as a butcher, a baker or footballer.

I have been told by an Oldham fan that Hughes will not be released till September.

  6. In the Daily Telegraph last week-probably Thursday's edition- Henry Winter did a very highly criticle article about McClaren, suggesting that Beckham was a backward step and Bentley would have been a forward step. Now I don't know if he read it, or if he was reacting to it, but he acted as though he thought Bentlay was way down the pecking order.

Someone might be able to find the link.

  7. I don't expect to get much loyalty from players these days, but neither do I want to see players signing for Rovers and before they have even kicked a ball for us witness them making it blatantly obvious that they see themselves as far too good for us and are just using us as a means to display their talents for the world to see and admire. Obviously there is an unspoken desire to move on as soon as possible to a bigger club.

I don't know him personally and I have been frustrated with him at times, but, since he was voted players' player of the year, I did wonder if a re-think should be done on his attitude? Presumably his colleagues would have seen through a fraud by the end of the season and they can obviously see something in him that we have missed.

  8. I think it's known as " Flying a kite", you get one of your journo mates to release the rumour and wait and see what happens- Chelsea and co step in, it's your lucky day, if nothing happens you just deny all knowledge.

On Radio Lancs they had part of an interview with Jose; he acknowledged Benni as "another one of his sons" having worked with him for 2 years at Porto, he was delighted he was 2nd in the charts of Premiership strikers and when asked if Benni would be at Chelsea next year, JM seemed to say "no".

  9. I'm not too surprised. 'After Hours' is a personal favourite of mine hence its inclusion. 'Raging Bull' is a great spectacle but I found it hard to really warm to. It's not really a film that is easy to watch IMO. Still...it is according to others. Each to their own.

Gangs of New York, other than for a great performance by Daniel Day Lewis, was a film I didn't enjoy.

    What is your favourite 92er?

My favourite is Goodfellas, my wife's is Taxi Driver- I found that overly violent at the time.

  10. Top 5 Scorsese movies...

    1. Goodfellas

    2. Taxi Driver

    3. Mean Streets

    4. King of Comedy

    5. After Hours

Blimey...no room for Raging Bull and Cape Fear? The man is just too good. Actually The Departed, even though I enjoyed it, would only just get into my personal Scorsese top 10. It's decent enough but a bit Scorsese Lite compared to some of the true cinematic masterpieces the man has produced.

EDIT - Whoops forgot Casino and The Color of Money. Loved those as well.

If you're interested....................the Halliwell's guide to films has 1-4 as ****, 5 as **, Raging Bull as ****, Cape Fear as ***, Casino as *** and Color of Money as **.

  11. Bloomin' 'ell. A Blackburn lad! I didn't realize he directed the Cock and Bull movie with Coogan. That's next on me list....

In the Daily Telegraph of 14/04. they had a list of the top 21 British Directors of all time. Michael Winterbottom is listed as 12th. " In contrast to many direcotrs......Winterbottom is dauntlessly profilic. Also, dautingly versatile. He moves with cosummate ease from literary adaptation ( Jude 1996 ) to pop-culture follies ( 24 Hour Party People 2002 ) and excoriating social drama ( In this World 2002 ) and then back to the Eng Lit canon with his cunningly post modern take on Tristram Shandy ( Cock and Bull Story 2005 )."
