  1. Sorry den but where's Sellars? Also...Shearer needs to be taken out. He isn't a 'cult hero'. Simple as. Hero yes, cult...god no. If anyone wishes to disagree then I will gladly argue (as in the Cole thread) until the cows come home. EDIT - Oh by the way, the BBC are looking for players who used to play for clubs which would rule Friedal out. Alright how's this... Mark Atkins Chris Price Colin Hendry David Speedie Noel Brotherston Simon Garner Killer Keeley Duncan Mckenzie Shearer Kevin Gallacher Sellars, S Clayton, R Douglas, B Roger Jones Derek Fazackerley You may notice the subtle change...
  2. I think theres a slight hint of "look how long I've been a rovers fan for" mixed in there as well. I'm not sure that's fair. It's more that for most fans their fondest memories tend to be when they first started watching the team. That's certainly the case with me. As good as Duff was, he couldn't quite match Sellars when it came to hero-worship. Nor could any player mind, it's just that when I was nine or ten and stood on the right hand side of the Blackburn End (so right in front of the left wing) Sellars was the man. You can tell when people started supporting Rovers because (in most cases but certainly not all) that's when they found their heroes. For some reasons it usually isn't quite the same when they grow up.
  3. Pray tell us more Blueboy! ....................................... Come on Blueboy spill the beans... What happened with Gayle???
  4. There was mention of a small fee in some of the reports, however Chris Coleman has just said how happy he was to get Cole on a free so it isn't quite sure. If there was a fee it'd likely be a miniscule one, maybe just to cover the legal costs of Rovers. We can talk about whether it is a good move or a bad move on here until the cows come home.
  5. Never mind "Wheres Loftys Post Gone", where on earth has lofty gone? Has he resurfaced under another handle once again? Oh and do we know who his mate was?
  6. READ THIS for the truth about the movie and how it was "creatively edited." You say presented in an interesting way, I say presented in a deceiving way. Michael Moore continues to divide. While his documentary Farenheit 9/11 is easily the most succesful ever (it made more in its first weekend than any documentary had managed before in its entire cinema run) and passed the $100million dollar mark this weekend, a book entitled 'Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man' was released in Britain. Ah well...you win some you lose some. From what I've managed to ascertain about Moore it isn't so much that he lies, more that he is the King of the Half-Truth and leaving things unmentioned. Bit like all politicans really I suppose. One thing I do know about Moore though...he's laughing all the way to the bank. Bit like his enemies really! Farenheit 9/11 came out a week ago over here, be interesting to hear the views of any who have seen it and can comment.
  7. Not too sure how Shearer could be described as a 'cult hero'. Great player, lethal finisher yes but one seriously boring man for the most part, at least what we saw of him through the media. Now the likes of Gayle or Speedie - they had an excitement about them that meant you didn't know what they were going to do. They were also nutters mind, which helped. When Shearer popped one in from twenty yards it was fantastic but he was so good at that time it was no shock. Shearer was a hero rather than being a cult figure surely? EDIT - Actually I do remember him eating chicken and beans a lot but is that enough to confer cult status?
  8. I always thought that the 'Flying Greek' George Donis had bags of skill, he just didn't know how to use it and was a little too good at running into dead ends before being pushed off the ball. Simon Barker also had great technique but left just as he was developing into a quality midfielder.
  9. Having a browse on the BBC website due to being unable to get to sleep I noticed that Football Focus will be running a new feature in the coming season about cult heroes of each club. They are looking for three players from each club who "had that something special - whether it was cheeky charisma, a player who made the crowd buzz or just his sartorial style! These players won't necessarily be your all-time greats but the ones you remember with a smile." It seems they are looking for players no longer at the club but for whom fans still hold fond memories. After receiving the nominations they'll feature them on a show and have a website vote to decide on the favourite. To send in your choices follow the link at the bottom of this post which has their email address and more details. Before then, my three choices. While even knows how great Shearer was I can't really see him as being a cult figure. Every single Rovers fan (or even any non-Rovers fan) knew he was awesome when at Rovers so I've chosen three popular players albeit not quite in the Shearer league. Mind you, Shearer's performances for put him in a one-man league so there's no disgrace about that. 1. Scott Sellars Scott was the type of winger who seemed to slink through defences like a ballet dancer rather than ever relying on brute force. At times he seemed to glide down the left wing yet despite seeming an almost fragile creature he could take what was dished out to him if need be. While not always the most consistent of players, when on form he could rule games. Certainly during the late eighties/early nineties he often provided the inspiration for the team and (in my opinion) was easily the most skilfull player we had. One of Kenny's worst decisions was to let him go in 92 when promoted as Scott proved when he later excelled for Newcastle in the top flight. Sellars was actually called up to an England squad (shades of Jansen) was forced to pull out due to injury and never quite managed to get as close again. Scott still apparently holds a soft spot Rovers and was seen at the Millenium Stadium for our League Cup win. 2. Mark Atkins Super Atko would never win any prizes for natural talent but was always near the head of the queue when it came to effort and desire. Signed by Don Mackay from Scunthorpe for a mere £40,000 in 1988, he remained at the club for seven years and left with a Premiership Medal. A versatile player, he played as right back and centre back before moving into midfield. Committed, energetic and faithful, he is the type of player who fans could never suggest they don't earn their money or show any fight. The best and worst moments of his Rovers career both came against Liverpool. An excellent goal from the edge of the area thundered in against them at Ewood in the title season and, less happily, that own goal in the last minute against a Dalglish-managed 'pool in the FA Cup. In 1994/94 he got his medal by starting 30 league games before moving to Wolves for £1million, so even made the club a profit. Last I heard he was at a non-league club. 3. Chris Price The best right back I've seen for Rovers, dashing baldy Price had two stints at Ewood although the second didn't last long. Price was another in the line of committed energetic players and was signed from Hereford but he also had a speciality, the pitch-long dribbles down the right hand side. Price was at his best in 1987/88 when we went on a 23-match unbeaten run in the league, a record that still stands. Despite all those games unbeaten I actually remember the game which ended the run, away to Stoke at their then home the Victoria Ground. Despite going behind Price never gave up and scored a typical speculative goal after a trademark surging run forward. Despite the loss, Price was awesome. The end of the season saw him move to promoted Villa where he certainly had his moments although a return to Rovers in the first season back in the top flight ended early and he moved on to Portsmouth. This did not detract from the happy memories of his first spell. Anyway...that's my choice. No doubt others will have their own thoughts regarding cult heroes. 10. There's an interesting article on Soccernet commentating on what looks to be the slow death (or at least fall in popularity) of transfer fees in football. While transfer fees seem to be in decline though, wages at the highest level remain sky-high. Counting the cost
  11. Some Liverpool fans still can't seem to forgive him for having sold the rights to his story of his recuperation from heart surgery to The Sun, which is a bit unfair as he did apologise for it afterwards and wasn't exactly in tip-top shape at the time. It certainly soured relations between Souey and a section of the crowd during his last few months in charge. As Rooney found out this summer, the feelings regarding Hillsbrough still run high for some on Merseyside.
  12. Fair enough, I probably got the wrong end of the stick there regarding Babbel. So sorry about that. USA - Yes I was pro Cole like many Rovers fans, including those on here who voted him into second place in the Player of the Year poll. There can't be many on here who can't have seen that with Stead we appeared to have a front pairing slowly turning into an excellent twosome upfront. Quality player and certainly can't fault him for lack of effort, when we needed him in two relegation battles we got the performances we needed. While he may not have chased lost clauses like a headless chicken I don't recall him shirking tackles or hiding in matches. Babbel did shirk tackles and hide. Souness seemed to become wise to it and cast him aside which was why we saw little of him in the run-in. The loss of Babbel won't cost us much but if we don't bring in a replacement for Cole up front we will will be the poorer for it. As for "You will read into Babbels comment what you wish FLB, that much we know." You mean just like you and everyone else does? Besides if Babbel really wanted to thank Souness why wasn't he more commited on the pitch last season? While I'm not anti-Souness like some on here (in fact I want him to show he has learnt from our abysmal last season and can turn things around) I'm not going to be blind to his mistakes if they cost Rovers. As he himself has admitted, he has made mistakes.
  13. For those who saw him - will De Pedro add much to the side this coming season? Is he as good as we crack him up to be?
  14. Well said Rev. Babbel did not give his all when at Rovers and admitted as much in th press. Why bother about mistakes when you are only playing for Rovers as he once suggested? Tris and USABlue can join the Babbel fan club if they wish but I'll stick to revering those players who actually try their best for Rovers and don't look down on it with a cynical smirk a la Markus.
  15. Apparently they went on a tour of Australia in the 1920s leading to them being referred to as 'the kangeroos' and the nickname has stuck ever since. So there's your link anyway. EDIT - From The Rough guide to European Football : A Fans' Handbook - "Colloquially known as bohemka and also nicknamed the Kangeroos after a tour of Australia in 1926"
  16. So you think it's a load of bull then?
  17. What an udderly stupid thread this has turned into.
  18. When I first heard Cole was leaving on a free I felt sick to the bottom of my three stomachs. We said that Nixon fella was talking bullocks...we were wrong.
  19. There are some seriously offal puns flying about on this thread.
  20. Isn't it about time all this Cole business was put out to grass?
  21. I know...from now on we should put 'WE'RE ONLY JOKING' before we all get involved in these VolpatoGate revelations.
  22. So we're all agreed it's Jordan's fault then?
  23. It is Volpato Page 19 of the LET in the 'Andy Neild's German Diary' column on the right hand side. There is two small pieces; one about how he saw lots of naked people in a German sauna (er...thanks for that Andy) and the other entitled 'Souey anger at Rovers fan'. Souness - "I believe one of our supporters kindly phoned up a radio station back in Blackburn so the name is out, which is very disappointing." About the only thing I can find of him on the net (in English anyway) is that he was in the 22-man squad selected for the Italy under-19 squad for the U19 European Championship this year. Unfortunately for him he missed out as when the squad was trimmed down to the final 18 players, he was one of four to be discarded. So it certainly seems he is an Italian U19 international, even if he didn't make it to Euro U19s. Italy U19s Message Board If anyone on here speaks Italian they'd be able to find out much more as there is (unsurprisingly) plenty more hits received from his name on Italian language websites.
  24. Hmmmm...so Souness surrounds himself with lots of young, athletic lads and even goes as far as to actually pay them for their "services". Even more damning still is that he used to have a moutasche. How gay is that? I'm sure Andy Neild could spill the beans if he wanted but he'd not be let into Ewood again.
  25. Not to mention sexist. While he's signed some black players how many women has he signed? None at all. There'll be some bras being burnt outside Ewood soon and it'll all be down to Souness' anti-female bias. Best not get that Ross lass on penalties mind. Anyone else remember her woeful last effort in 94?
