On that basis, I am not surprised transferring footballers can prove to be extremely difficult and lengthy when there are agents and perhaps other clubs trying to hijack deals. To be honest I don't particularly want Rovers signing players other clubs aren't coveting.

But we have the added headache of owners on the other side of the world who are not easy to contact and probably are not that bothered if deals get done quickly or not.

It's a definite disadvantage that may result in us missing out on certain targets.

In this instance it wouldn't surprise me if, for once, the owners are not the problem. Mowbray assumedly knows his budget and was able to get SG's £5m transfer over the line without any obvious problems. We don't know if he has restrictions on how he can use his budget (eg. more available for young attacking players) but you have to assume he knows what he has to work with. More than likely we've dawdled too long on targets, other clubs have registered an interest and the process has slowed down as a result - especially if other clubs can offer better wages than us. It's ideally why you have a replacement pretty much lined up before letting a first teamer with no obvious replacement in the squad go.

I think that's exactly it. SG's transfer means Mowbray has less leeway in other negotiations. GK's agent increases demands due to interest from other clubs which means Mowbray has to go cap in hand to Venky's.

We don't have the infrastructure to sort things out quickly so everything gets delayed and put in jeopardy.

Can’t believe the gk situation is dragging into next week, I know mowbray is tearing his hair out at the length is taking to get deals done, not been an easy window by any stretch. Can’t give the keeper name but it was my understanding it was all but tied up Wednesday. Haven’t been given a reason for delay

It's been 'all but tied up' for weeks. There's a stumbling block that needs to be ironed out or approved in Pune .

Il put my neck on the line and say we will play hard and get a keeper by tomorrow night...

Assuming you are referring to our top target, it seems like negotiations have been ongoing for weeks. Must be something that can't be easily agreed upon so if we start driving a hard bargain at this point it is more likely to go on until the end of the window.

More likely we will eventually agree to their terms which will mean getting the nod from Pune but can't see that happening on a Saturday.

I think it will drag on.

  5. Didn't we try 'no one down the middle' at Preston last season?

Usual back 4 + Bennett, Reed, Smallwood, Dack, Palmer, Armstrong.

Maybe Armstrong was nominally down the middle but he drifted wide and Palmer ended up being the furthest forward. Totally toothless in first half

Graham came on at half time and scored with first touch.

Maybe Mowbray saw something I didn't.

Gk deal being kept very underground, won’t be a link to this one, first we will know about it is when pictures are put up by the club. Even my source isn’t being told a definite name.

I don't think it will be any of the names mentioned so far.

Probably be announced once Venky's have sanctioned or refused the Gallagher deal.

sky reporting we have agreed a fee for Gallagher

I suspect a fee has been agreed for a while. No secret that Rovers is his preferred destination and Mowbray is very keen.

I think the hold up may well be Venky's balking at his wage demands. He's on prem wages with 2 years of a contract remaining. Won't come cheap.

I guess until this is sorted one way or the other, all other meaningful business will be on hold.

I suspect he’s been to Pune and come back with a smaller budget to work with and any signings over a million have to go back to the owners. Suspect there faith in his judgement has been ruined by the money wasted on Brereton

I'm sure both Mowbray and Waggottt stated, after the India trip, that the budget was similar to last year.

There will be all 3 though, it’s just at varying qualities. Gallagher is one mowbray likes and sees resale value on so is happy to spend as he is available

But if all 3 means blowing the money on SG and then looking for loans/frees in the other positions then, to me, it's the wrong policy.

If we have to pay out to get a decent defender and GK and we then can't afford Gallagher, so be it. Gallagher is a luxury compared to the other positions

The cost of the deal is unknown as is the depth of the V’s pockets. It’s not worth worrying about imo. Based on last years budget I think we could spend seven figures again. Especially with the Raya money.

They sometimes pay a player like for example Ruddy, Hart or Forster a large signing on fee to keep wages down.

I hope I am wrong but I honestly don't think we are going to be spending too much this summer.

If we spend 4/5 million on Gallagher all of those 3 keepers will be out of our reach.

I think we may end up with SG + various loan options in defence and a cheap keeper.

Tbf I said that Gally would happen as long as he still wanted it. Wigan have ‘backed away’ because he’s made a decision on where he wants to go. The ‘too expensive’ bit is just spin.

i fully expect him to sign and as this would represent a reversal of the Bauer deal in terms of kudos on our side for getting over the line it will also be interesting to see the reaction.

He's still very expensive and wages will be high.

If we go for SG I don't think there will be many (or any ) more permanent  paid for signings this summer.  Maybe some frees and loans.

  12. Feels to me like the budget is much lower this year compared to last summer.

I think a deal for Gallagher would eat up virtually all the cash.

    So the choices are

    1) Gallagher + cheap goalie + loan defender(s)

    2) Decent goalie + money spent on defender(s) ( No Gallagher )

    3) Sell someone (Travis ?) allowing us to afford Gallagher + decent goalie and maybe a defender.

Loan market not really active yet so it may all happen approaching deadline day.

Just me thinking aloud. I'd go for option 2.

Gallagher will be off to Wigan I suspect don’t think we have the cash for him. Heard from various people the deals proving hard to do

You may be right. If we really wanted Gallagher and he wanted to come to Rovers ( as reported ) then surely it would have been easy to finalise a deal by now if we had the cash ready.

The fact that it hasn't happened means that Mowbray isn't entirely convinced he's the right choice or there are problems with Rovers offer to the player / Southampton.

Alternatively Mowbray is waiting for the nod from Pune.

Now that Wigan have made a firm offer we will have to enter a bidding war which can only be bad news.

    Snooze and you lose.

Club is a joke under these lot, always will be. Why do people think this will change? Not bought a ST or any club merchandise since 2012 and will continue that stance, these lot are criminal. Get optimistic for a day and then remember we have venkys.

Exactly. Anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves. Slow build or slow death ?

Newcastle were interested, and they are a pretty atrocious outfit so hed get in their side. Only stayed up due to having one of the best managers in europe.

Selling him would be madness, but as you say its been said mowbray likes him. So if it happened, are we saying venkys have told tm and sw to sell?

Been there before - remember Tom Cairney?

Johnson interest could suggest Brandon O’Neill is a no go if we were ANY other club. But because we’re us, and he’s a midfielder, you just never know.

Setting up to play 3-6-1 with a midfield six of Travis, Evans, Smallwood, O’Neill, Johnson and Davenport ?

or 4-6 as we did in the first half at Preston last season !

Anyone seen the photos from the final austria training session? Theres a couple of photos of Chapman sat on the sidelines looking sad and no other pics of him joinign in the rest of the squad. Theres a pic at the end of him doing some boxing on his own with a coach.

Wonder if his hamstring is still made of string.

Just looked at the photos - everyone looks pretty miserable, including Mowbray.

  18. I'm sure both Mowbray and Waggott have stated that our budget in this window is similar to last summer.

Surely buying Assombalonga would blow the lot so there are 3 possibilities

    1) the rumour is wrong

    2) we have a bigger budget than last year and can afford him and some defenders

    3) Mowbray has no intention of buying defenders

As for Venkys advocating spending money quickly on players who are not necessarily Mowbray's main targets then they have learned absolutely nothing and are still meddling. They need to leave the football decisions to people who know football. In actual fact I'm sure they would love it if Mowbray spent nothing as long as we manage to avoid relegation.
