How overrated are some of these players? People hail Alves as some kind of God of fullbacks, simply because he uses his exceptional fitness and confidence to neglect his defensive berth. But he seems to me to be no genius but just a good player and, frankly, a hysterical cheat.

Talented manager?! No-one seems to know what his football management talents are. His record is quite good - but most people view it without the context. But in terms of identifying genuine qualities?! All I can think of is that he keeps his players happy by letting them do what the hell they want and dictate his management choices.

That story about the League One club reminded me a little of my school days. That's NOT to say, I hasten to add, that anything actually happened and it was only horse-play and nothing quivered (as far as I know) but there were always a group of guys who found the spontaneous clothed mock gang bang an absolute hoot. I'm sure I've answered this many times before and people are very bored with me writing about Taylor but since you asked: Was the Rovers U18 captain. Became one of the most consistently impressive reserve players and becoming reserve captain. Gained England U19 recognition. Got called up by Hughes to Rovers first team squad. Played effectively at right back for a couple of friendly games under Hughes when Lucas Neill was injured. Made a decent impression in a short loan spell at Blackpool. Simon Grayson later tried to sign him to join the Champ outfit. Had an outstanding but brief loan spell at Crewe Alex in League One. Had a disappointing loan spell at Huddersfield, where he did at least make an impression with his set-pieces and assists. Joined Tranmere part of the way through the season and still won their Young Player of the Season. Is now an integral member of Tranmere's back four. Manager Ronnie Moore has likened him to former Tranmere full back, Ryan Taylor. From my very general knowledge, his strengths are his technical ability, distribution and set-pieces. His weaknesses are his pace and his physical strength. That is what I know about Andy Taylor. And that is enough to make me believe that Rovers should have persevered with him rather than signing Berner. That said, I've made this point before and only raise it again at your request. My point in the above post was that Jay McEveley is an inferior left back to Andy Taylor and I fully expect Andy Taylor to have surpassed McEveley in a couple of years time. Imo, McEveley has conned people into thinking that he is decent by his purple patch when he first played for Rovers. Since then, he has basically been awful and, imo, is a dirty player.

Where is Jay McEveley now, I hear you cry? Answer: Still being made a fool of by opposition forwards. This is from the Plymouth v Preston match report (Plymouth won 1-0). "Mackie had the beating of McEveley at will..." I say it again, McEveley was one of the more defensively hapless left backs we've had in recent years. Anyone who thinks that he is a better player than Andy Taylor or Eddie Nolan, surely, does not have a strong argument. I strongly suspect that within two years time, the latter two will be playing at a higher level than McHeavily.

If Jon Stead can have a brief flirtation with success in the Premier League, there's hope for a lot of lower league footballers. The guy has some technique but his overall game is weak, to say the least. I am surprised that Ipswich think that they can get anything out of him. I expect him to look tidy for a few games and then fall away.

The fact that Phil Neville is a effective Premier League DM, suggests that any half decent player, given time and with the right attitude and physical attributes can make it in that position. Imo, Ooijer, Reid and Emerton could all do a much better job in there than Moko. Samba played there occasionally for Hertha. Obviously, a specialist, decent player for that position would trump all the above as the best bet.

He makes me embarrassed to be from England. How long will he last at Twente? Within a few months of the season starting, the FC Twente director who appointed McClaren will have grown a thick beard and be serving behind a counter in an alternative medicine practice in Amsterdam. It was more than a crime to appoint McClaren manager.

Has anyone read the classic novel by EM Forster, "A Passage to India". I really like it but I'm not sure why. Not that I didn't want to like it - but it isn't a particularly exciting book in the orthodox sense but there's something profound about it that is hard to put my finger on.

Kolehmainen didn't make it to the reserves, I think. So, I guess the main people involved in reaching that decision were Gary Bowyer and Glyn Hodges. Perhaps, I am being unfair on Downes in that respect but being the top man at the academy, he must carry some responsibility for such decisions. However, surely it is a major embarrassment to the academy/reserve staff that a player is discarded as not good enough for the reserves and yet, he crops up at Alkmaar, having earned his previous club a decent transfer fee. Frankly, with the paucity of talent coming through, we can't afford to lose out on that sort of money.

Another success story for our unbelievable academy staff. From my research, we released Kolehmainen for NOUGHT to FC Oula. And FC Oula sold him to AZ Alkmaar for 750, 000 Euros.
