[Archived] Soton Winning, Oh Dear!
rover6 replied to krislu's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Balderdash. We're a bit lacking in creativity and none of our strikers are too hot at the moment but no way are we the worst in the league. When Hughes plays two strikers and one of Stead, Gallagher or Bothroyd start fulfilling their potential, we'll be fine. -
Wiltord and Jeffers both cost approx 10 million. Arsenal haven't spent as much as Man U or Chelsea but Arsene Wenger does like to play the poor hard-up manager who has to compete on a shoe-string budget. And they might not have spent a fee on him, but by all accounts Sol Campbell is on a massive wage in the 80/90K pw region.

The fact is that in football the qualities of being successful and universally popular are mutually exclusive.

[Archived] Homegrown Player Plans Revealed

Clubs ready to resist new rule... I would love to see this new rule take effect. Whilst there is no doubt there are foreign players that are lighting up the Premiership, at the same time there are those mediocre individuals who managers sign because they don't want to take the risk of fielding a youngster who may be prone to mistakes as he settles into the team (McEveley!). Rangers recently signed that Dutch goalkeeper, Watereus (or something) because McLeish was too scared to give their young Scottish goalie a chance. A classic case of a mediocre foreigner holding back the progress of a homegrown player. -
Classic! Loved that one - cheers! The Scottish Stig Inge Bjornebye...?

It'll be interesting to see who Hughes opts for in centre midfield against Boro. Savage likes getting forward, so I wonder if playing him alongside Tommo would be too attack minded. BTW: The commentators on the radio were saying that Tommo stormed down the tunnel on being subbed - did that really happen?

How would you know? At half time you didn't even realise what formation Rovers were playing Against Colchester there seemed to be conflicting reports on where Pedersen was playing. However, people who were at this match suggest that MGP was playing as a left winger and that is how I know, Mr Confrontational.
-
BTW: It wasn't all barrages and negativity from Mourinho. He did say that if we played like that every home game we could be competing for a UEFA cup place.
-
My only complaint would be precisely that. Was Hughes happy with a respectable 0-1 defeat to the mighty Chelsea? Having been managed by Alex Ferguson, I would have thought he would have picked up some of the Scot's desperation to win/draw. Jemal Johnson was on the bench - heck, Amoruso was on the bench - he could have come on and tried to win some headers up front. But Hughes left things as they were and things sort of petered out. Unfortunately, one of Hughes traits is his conservative nature in team selection and substitutions which is why Welsh fans were endlessly querying why Robbie Earnshaw was used so sparingly when Hughes was Wales boss. On a positive note, I think Hughes got the 4-5-1 formation right, I wasn't keen, but it did seem to stifle Chelsea.
-
Football myopia. If Chelsea had come to Ewood and Gudjohnson had niggled away like Dickov did, Emerton injured by a tackle early on and Tiago committed innumerable fouls without getting a card like Savage did - we'd all be complaining about dirty Chelsea. Frankly, I prefer hearing Mourinho criticise us than the patronizing and meaningless praise that you sometimes hear him spewing after they've just won with ease.
-
Really surprised that Jemal Johnson hasn't been thrown. We may as well go for it.
-
I think it's time we went 4-4-2 with Jemal on. Too niggly from Dickov and Savage. I'm all for competitive but those two seem to go too far and it doesn't help.
-
Are we playing with five in midfield or is Pedersen playing as a striker?
-
Two Rovers reject notch numbers 2 and 3 for Bolton as Spurs face the prospect of a third consecutive league defeat.
-
And shove it soft lad wee Savage. Is the poor chap close enough to his family now?... Hypocrite.
-
Brentford.
-
How has he treated the club and the fans? Is he going on strike? Is he feigning injury? Is he making up lies about wanting to move closer to his family when he really wants more money? The answer to all those questions is no. I just can't comprehend how anyone can say Ferguson is treating the club badly. He's homesick and wants to go back to Glasgow - as does his family. If he doesn't go back, I can envisage him being a professional and trying his utmost for Rovers for the rest of the season. I think us Rovers fans have been spoilt. If you'd been a Birmingham fan and felt that side of the Savage saga, or been a Wolves fan and had Henri Camara acting like a prrick to leave, or a Charlton fan who suffered the Scott Parker fiasco - then you'd know what a selfish player is. Ferguson is not.
-
ME! Thank ferk I married a woman that supports me for the good of the family rather than undermines me. Rover 6 have you been paying attention? Whether Savage is also a puff or not is irrelevant cos we behaved with dignity in a proper fashion and paid full price for him. If Rangers can or would do the same or similar he can go with pleasure. But they are trying to shaft us nothing more, nothing less. They even want us to take more of the 2nd rate never- has-beens that have only signed for em cos no one else wants them.... I mean who with any talent and ambition would want to play in modern Scottish football ffs? (btw Larssen was a complete one off). The shyster Murray tries to convince us that footballers values have dropped in the last two years just days after selling free transfer Boumsong for 8million! Well ###### to you matey! For placing some half arsed johnny foreigner defender at double the value of the national captain the man should be reviled up there. Our bid was backed by hard finance. Sky has transformed the once scottish giants into modern day pygmies but the sad sweaties have not the intellect to accept that. Sooner or later they will have to. Thenodrog, take a few deep breaths...it might help. I was suggesting that if you condemn Ferguson, then you have to condemn Savage who did something similar to Birmingham. David Murray is being an annoying, sanctimonious prat - but since when has acting genuinely got anyone anywhere in the murky world of football transfers? He's trying to get the best for Rangers and I'm afraid he thinks he can do that by spewing crap. But after selling Boumsong for 8 million, Amoruso for 1.7 million and Barry Ferguson for nearly 7 million - the man knows what he's doing - give him that.
-
Ferguson is NOT doing a Savage and looking to leave through greed. He's doing it for the benefit of his family and his own well-being. I think Rovers fans are being fickle if they expect Barry to put his Rovers career over his own well-being. And all you Rovers fans accusing Ferguson of being a puff or whatever - I expect you to show consistency and condemn Savage for being a devious, greedy, loyalty-deficient, uber-puff.
-
I can only agree with Mr Dado_Prso_9 that the who people are turning on Ferguson because he wants to return to Glasgow are being mindlessly hypocritical. As I said before, he's putting his family ahead of his career - and who wouldn't? BTW - If Barry is a 'puff' for being homesick and caring about his family who also want to go back, Robbie Savage is a greedy, devious, Afghan hound, uber-puff. But I don't see any Rovers fans accusing him of being that.

[Archived] Rovers 3 - 0 Colchester Utd
rover6 replied to Paul's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Sadly, I can envisage another draw. We're not exactly playing brilliantly at the moment and Colchester are on a high after a recent 5-0 win. I wonder if Jemal Johnson might get a start. -
Very surprised with the decision. Nisse has been superb alongside Todd. Hughes must be looking to add some pace to the defence with Mokoena but Nisse hasn't merited being dropped.
-
We need Dickov because he occasionally scores goals - unlike the rest of our strikers who have a penchant for not doing so.
