The usual suspects anonymous. Defensively a shambles as soon as a decent team tries to have a go at us, to the surprise of no one. Special mention to Trippier, Bellingham, Foden and Kane who have all been particularly useless. 5th best team in the world? Don't make me laugh. Couldn't beat Denmark. Couldn't beat Slovenia. Narrowly scraped past Serbia. Now being embarrassed by Slovakia. Lose this one and Gareth needs to do the honourable thing, much like the manager he replaced, and resign immediately afterwards. Best England manager since Sir Alf my foot. He isn't a patch on Robson, Venables or Hoddle for a start. Getting a bunch of easy tournament draws and achieving the bare minimum of squeezing past mostly lesser opposition, before inevitably losing to the first good team we come up against, don't impress me much, to paraphrase Shania Twain. Russia 2018 and Euro 2020 were huge chances for us to finally win an international tournament. I genuinely think with a progressive, modern manager at the helm we'd have done it. Such a shame. We can still win this one, but even if we do scrape through the Swiss will teach us a lesson. Might be for the best if we crash out now.

It's simply because he has no imagination. He can't see any other way of winning.

You have to make some allowance for it being accidental, but I don't think it's as simple as saying "don't penalise any accidental handballs". If you've got some clumsy oaf jumping and running around with their arms swinging everywhere, then that obviously needs to be addressed if said clumsiness affects the natural flight of the ball, whether they intended to handball or not. What I found strange was the suggestion that proximity from ball-to-hand has now been removed from the interpretations of the rule. Can't see any logic behind that decision. That's where they've gone wrong imo. You have to take that into account alongside what would be considered a 'natural' body position to make a fair call. At the moment you've got half the defenders running around with their arms crossed behind their backs, which is ridiculous and clearly gives the attacker an advantage as running around with your arms behind your back is going to limit your maneuverability.

Hungary's last gasp goal against Scotland now counts for nothing.

Shame for Ukraine, undone by a poor first game in the end. Played better and were more up for it than Belgium, but just didn't quite have the quality to get over the line in the end. No shame in going out like that, they gave it a right good go, as our Gary used to say. Would happily face Belgium, as they look rancid, but think they're on the other side of the draw now?

I don't think better teams facing us are going to be naive enough to play gung ho attacking football, leaving plenty of space for Saka, Bellingham, Foden etc to exploit. They'll have been watching our matches and know that it'll simply be a case of allowing us to piss around with the ball for a while before one of our players inevitably misplaces a pass, at which point we can be picked off without too much trouble on the break. Better teams will totally tear us apart on the counter unless we step up our performances massively.

Has to be one of the worst groups in tournament history. 7 goals in the entire group, I think? Final matches and not a single one of the teams could score a goal ffs. You'd expect us, Denmark and Slovenia to all get knocked out in the last 16, and I don't think any neutrals would be too concerned. So many good games and good performances across the tournament, but Group C has been the big let down for anyone watching

Got to feel sorry for the travelling fans short-changed by these diabolical England performances. I feel robbed and it's only my time and TV license.

Foden the pick of the bunch so far. Kane once again not at the races. A bit more energy about us in the last 15 minutes but it's pretty sad that this is even worth mentioning.

Come to think of it Scotland did have one shot on target, the Hanley effort at the end, but the BBC stats don't recognise it for whatever reason. Oh well. Either way, it was baffling to play this way in a must win game against Hungary. Waited until the last 10 mins to try and then massively overloaded the attack and could have let in two or three if Hungary had more quality. Granted they probably should have had a pen but sometimes it's about making your own luck. Scotland seemed to have taken notes from England with that slow, ponderous style of play. But at least we normally go a goal up before turning to shit.

Weird seeing a couple of comments elsewhere calling this a smash and grab by Hungary. Scotland had 4 shots and none on target. Hungary had 14 with 5 on target. Wouldn't call that a smash and grab result. Edit: one on target for the Scots
