According to the BBC only one team have gone on to win the tournament after losing their first game (Spain in 2010), so Germany have given themselves a mountain to climb already. The Mexicans worked hard and Germany looked clueless as to how to break them down.

Italy lost their first game at USA 94 before making a run to the finals and technically not losing in the final as it was decided on penalties.

Though that 'penalty' incident just before looked more of one that the Argentina one yesterday.

Who makes the decision there to look at it? If the ref is not interested does that just mean you're screwed or can the var guys pull the ref back and say "you missed something you blind arsehole"?

So why can’t he do it for country then, if he’s so world class?

He single handedly got Argentina to this world cup and he got them to the last finals. There has been non stop crying on this site about the nasty sergio ramos messi has destroyed him. Diego someone's athletico have got to be the toughest team in the champions league.

The physicality of the premier league is overstated. Its fast of that there is no doubt but 60 to 70 percent of players in a premier league game are not even British so what does it matter where the league is.

I removed my last line as when I reread it came across as a bit nasty but you quoted me before I edited. Sorry ?

I dared to say on Twitter that Argentina looked shaky at the back and I got a load of stick saying why do you think England will be better, blah blah blah,. Almost as though an England fan can't comment on other teams now!

We're all big boys on here you didn't need to edit it. Anyome who doesnt think the Argentina def is shaky needs get glasses.

Most of the time it's only really the players that know - re diving etc. so let them request to review things. It would be interesting to see if Greizmann would have asked to review today's penalty incident.

And as you said loads of things get missed . . . including off the ball incidents . . .so, bring it on. The WC has only just started and VARCat has been very hit and miss so far.

Yeah i suspect if he only had one review he would have saved it for more of a sure thing.

What has the quality of the Premier League, with the amount of non-British players plying their trade, got to do with the quality of the English National team?  We're talking about the merits of the two leagues yet you put the England jibe in there.

Another bitter fan from a staying-at-home country.

The premier league is inextricably linked with English football. Its the most competitive league but not the best.

I think Messi feels the pressure of having a nations expectations on his shoulders and struggles with it. Ronaldo is always playing for himself so is immune to pressure which is why is is a machine and why id want him taking my penalties.

Also regardless of if we were staying at home or there at the world cup id still be bitter ?

I think this VAR thing should work in a similar way to cricket. Give each team 2 reviews. ?

That Denmark goal looked a bit touch and go . . . .Some might even say clear and obvious.?

This is not a bad idea. I think it should work as it is plus the team captain gets to question 1 decision each match because some things are missed by the ref and doesnt get looked at by the var.

The premier league defences are alot better than la liga..how many strikers have struggled to score in england, gone to spain and bagged loads of goals..la liga is obviously technically superior to the epl but defenders arent the best..anyway didnt messi struggle to scors against english clubs for a long time?

Lol the old how would he do on a rainy night at stoke. Guess thats why you've won so many of the last few world cups.

Lets be realistic most of the top 4 or 5 spanish league teams would still be challenging for the champions league positions in the prremier league as well.

Can't agree with that Messi took a poor Barca side to a league and cup double this season losing only 1 game in the league all season. Without Messi this season Barca would have been struggling to get into the top 4.

What I can't understand is why Dybala doesn't start for Argentina as he would ease the load on Messi as he can create chances from nothing whereas today you felt if it wasn't coming from Messi no one else would create something for Argentina. Dybala playing would also give Messi more space and allow him to player further forward at times he was much to deep today.

Surprised by the negativity surrounding Messi today. I thought he played well. Had 2 very close shots and supplied the ball for the missed penalty. Di Maria was an embarrassment how he has had multiple 50million pound transfers??? As our man Eamon Dunphy would say he is a spoofer and a show-pony.

Campbell has been offered several roles within academies and junior set ups but has refused them as he believes he should start at managerial level because of the level he played at, he's not been given jobs because he's an arrogant sod. It was interesting that he bemoaned Craig Bellamy on 5 live for being given an interview for the Oxford job when he was turned down, he argued it was because he was black. The interviewer challenged him on it and pointed out Bellamy had spent a number of years working FOC with Cardiff's U12's, U14's before taking a paid role on the academy, working up to reserve manager and then first team coach, whilst also undertaking his various FIFA quals, Campbell fell apart.

To play devil's advocate, why does Sol Campbell have to take academy rolls and work with children and sweep the floor at a 3rd division club when players of similar stature and career's (Lampard/Gerrard/Neville) walk into major jobs without doing the same. Stephen Gerrard has never come across to me a manager in waiting or ever remotely bright, I will hold my hands up if he turns out to be a genius.

Sol Campbel may indeed be a fruit-loop I don't know but it does not appear to me that he has received a fair shake of the stick I am not convinced its racism maybe its an agent thing????

Darren Moore came up the hard way through the lower leagues. He knows the other side of football. As far as I can see all Campbell knows about is the big boys and being on mega bucks.

And what do Gerrard lampard and Neville know about the hard side of football?

No comment on Collymore's personal life. I just don't know enough.

As a pundit, for a very long time, he was the only-and I mean only-ex footballer to talk critically about the "mismanagement" of our club. He did so on a number of occasions. The same cannot be said of any of our own ex players. I know Sutton began to speak out, but only fairly recently.

Stan  came out against the premier league and the F.A. and allowed our fans to speak-without trying to close them down, as soon as they mentioned certain agents!

Also, let's face it, he is not entirely wrong in his comments about the likes of Jenas...

    Stan's the man!

Not to mention its hardly fair to.have a go at him for tossing off at a bit of dogging when our own star player was involved in something similar? Not that i support him giving ulrika a hiding.

Good player in his prime but signing like this just make me hark back to the days of Murhpy et al. id love for us to sign an older player and it work out for us so that I can stem the dread whenever we are linked to any.

    Tugay, you got a son?

Nah he is a knob, from that horrible pink and black range rover to ending his international career over being teased about going bald and then faking his grannys death he is a laughing stock.

Not tugay obviously or his son for that matter.
