  1. I feel like I'm not speaking for the whole of the Rovers fanbase when I say that, to me, Preston are just another run-of-the-mill championship team and it isn't even a derby. Being from Accrington I've barely met any Preston fans in my life time. Burnley fans however... (it has been tough living in Accrington over the last few weeks). Obviously I still want a win and a good performance like any game Blackburn play but a loss won't hurt more than a loss against Reading or Middlesbrough for example. Any one agree with that or am I the only one?

  2. I feel like we had a good start against USA. If we got a goal in that first 20 mins where we had control of the game, the game would have been very different. But once USA was allowed to be comfortable with the game and had more of the ball, it was always difficult to get in front. Call it the hindsight bias if you want but I even mentioned this as a possibility to my mates at the time during the game.

No one "buys" the league though it's virtually impossible to win the league without money. The barbs thrown at Rovers were mainly lazy journalists who didn't like having to write about what they perceived as a "small" club, and it stuck. It was nonsense then and it's nonsense now and we were never given the credit we deserved.

The 'bought the league label' is just a metaphor these days. Not to be taken literally.

While I kind of agree with your sentiment, they still spent a shit load of money, by anybody's standards. Proportionately a lot more than Jack Walker did, and yet we got the 'bought the league' accusations (and still do).

Tbh I've never looked at the money spent on that squad. Probably should have done more research but on face value, no one expected that squad to be challenging for the title. Much less Champions League. I think the 'bought the league' label is just a metaphor these days for just saying they won the league after spending a lot on money. Not to be taken literally.

As an aside the "Leicester" miracle was also well funded by a billionaire owner.

I do think Leicester was the first team in a long time to not buy the league. They just survived the season before, and I think they were expecting more of the same, but all the stars aligned. A manger that knew how to get the most out of his players and had an overachieving season while the big clubs all flopped simultaneously. I remember watching Leicester that season. There were a lot of wins that were by the skin of their teeth but they all count.

Ah so if you win the Premier League Trophy you become champions of the world - or maybe the universe?

Nonesense. And for the record when the PL was created, it was simply the old Division 1 rebadged. It has become harder in the intervening years but hadn't changed much by 94/5 - indeed many blame/credit Walker with distorting the competition and starting the financial arms race it has become.

I agree with a lot of what you said there. As a whole I respect your opinions on here as your evidently a fan of football as a whole and not just Burnley. The thing is though, the year we won the PL, we weren't the only team spending money. Man U fans still say we bought the league, but they spent a lot of money at the time too. So, if they beat West Ham on the final day, they would be saying they bought the league instead perhaps?

  7. It was about 30 mins into the game, and I tuned to my mate and said, "This reminds me too much of the Reading away game where we lost 3-0 and I'd say that's the worst performance of the season so far". Well looking at the game as a whole days later I'd got as far to say that the performance at Burnley eclipsed the Reading performance it for how bad it was.

  8. It was interesting what the pundits said after the game. They said the teams who were more direct like Birmingham and Cardiff were the ones that have caused Burnley the most trouble. Just makes you think that if the team was set up to be more direct, we may have actually stood a chance. Thing is, we defend for 90 mins and lose 3-0. Would have been better to lose 3-0 after giving it a go. At least if we did that, they wouldn't have got in their stride as much and may have even had some chances ourselves.

You know what as time has gone on I’m thinking more and more like that first poster.

I’m a born and bred Blackburner but by luck or chance I’ve never really encountered Dingles at school, work, local neighbours etc. Work wise I’ve always come across far more Nob Enders who are a right bitter bunch towards all things Rovers. So I don’t have that fear that many others have re running into them at work, the pub etc.

Of course I’ve always seen Burnley as our arch rivals, of course I desperately want us to win, but maybe it’s an age thing, maybe it’s because we are no longer the undisputed top dogs with a fear of losing The Record, but I can honestly say I’m far more sanguine going into this game than the previous ones.

Yeah, I'd say that's a fair point. I have met people from Blackburn and lower Darwen say similar things in the past. Me personally, being born and bred in Accrington, I have had the misfortune to be around Burnley fans in every job or education I've been in. With Accrington being right in the middle of the two towns, that's to be expected. I find it interesting when some Rovers fans say they hate Preston as much or more than Burnley. Especially when I could count the number of Preston fans I've encountered with my fingers.

It’s not ideal, but a few groans or frustrated comments about getting him off are part and parcel of being in a crowd.

My bet would be that BBD never heard any of them….

Yeah I agree that it’s part and parcel of being in a crowd. He was rock bottom in terms of confidence though and those groans would have affected him more than most. He definitely didn’t hear the groans during lockdown anyway.
I work with your mate Elliot and he agreed with what I said.

I’m convinced there’s no club like ours where fans are determined to blame others, even at the expense of reality.

The overwhelming majority of fans in the ground went over the top with their support of BBD as they could see he needed encouragement. A few grumbles at mistakes don’t equate to ‘putting pressure on him at home’.

If that's what you saw from the fans then fair enough. my own personal experiance was that of many fans shouting "He's $h!t, get him off!" Which I thought was out of order. I agree that he definitely needed encouragement. Someone else also responded that he gained strength in that the time that coincided with lockdown which could very well have been what helped him improve tbf. That and playing international football. Just going off what I saw for myself. That's all.

    Haha. Me too..

But...Let's have it straight...He did look clueless and shit. Lol

There were times where I was wondering if he was even a professional football player. Tripping over the ball etc. Personally, I saw the improvement during lockdown when he was playing in empty stadiums. Didn't have the Rovers fans putting the pressure on him at home and he gained his confidence back.

I've just dusted off and brought up to date from a few years ago a very rough estimate of both clubs' catchment areas. These are the places that locals could naturally gravitate to each club, not that they do.

The LCC population estimate for 2021 has Burnley at 94,000 and Pendle at 96,000. I've then added a third of Hyndburn*, 28,000 and one third of Ribble Valley* 20,000. Total 238,000 before Rossendale.

Blackburn has 150,000, plus one third of Hyndburn 28,000 and one third of Ribble Valley 20,000. Then another third of Chorley* 34,000 and a quarter of South Ribble* 28,000. Total 260,000 before Rossendale.

I haven't included Rossendale's 71,000 as I don't know the area well enough to have a proper opinion, but my gut feeling, backed up by posts above, is there would naturally be more Burnley than Blackburn fans. My guess is therefore that the catchments are pretty much equal.

    * I split Hyndburn 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and Stanley.

Ribble Valley 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and PNE

Chorley 3 ways - Rovers, Burnley and Notlob.

South Ribble 75% PNE and 25% Rovers.

Personally, as someone from Accrington, I wouldn't even give a third of Hyndburn to Accrington. Although the crowds have improved, most people see Stanley as a 2nd team. Look at the friendly we had with them this pre-season. It was practically a home match. I bet a lot of Rovers fans there lived in Accy. From my experience, the main clubs supported are Rovers, Burnley, Man United, Liverpool and there's even been some more Citeh fan around lately. Unfortunately for them, they are most people's 2nd club in Hyndburn.

Mowbray isn't a terrible manager by any stretch, but he's also one that has repeatedly shown not to learn from his mistakes. He's carried the same positives and the same negatives to essentially every club he's been at. Sunderland can expect some good runs, some horrific runs, some baffling tactical selections, bizarre soundbytes and periods of satisfaction followed by equally long periods of immense frustration.

Hopefully when we play them it'll be during a death spiral.

Not checked the fixtures since reading this post but if we want to catch them in a death spiral we need to play them after the new year. February would be optimal.
