  1. Was almost bursting with delight yesterday when I heard. Thing is it was totally unexpected, by him too. In fact he went to the admin office just to see his 2:1 confirmed and when he saw just a 1 next to his number he told the woman there had been a mistake and she had to show him all his marks to make him believe it. He was in shock all day!!!

I hope that you have referred him to:-

Real life lesson number 1 - If you get something good you weren't expecting, don't report it and say it is a mistake. Keep your mouth shut. Reporting mistakes is for negative things.

  2. Any of our posters who live in/know Leeds recommend anywhere to take our 2 youngest for a bit of a celebration meal after they graduate. Their ceremonies are in York and Stoke so Leeds is convenient for all of us. Looking for somewhere nice but not too pricy. Thanks

I don't know Leeds. Went to a place called Brio years ago that was nice.

Sam's/Tom's Chop Houses in Manchester are good and there is a Leeds version, although I've never been.

  3. I think the dated look kind of adds to the dystopia element of the whole thing now. They have cleaned up the quality in the latest release and one can ignore the hair and such if one tries hard enough. Who knows what styles would be like in the 23rd century?

ISTR that all the people in Buck Rogers (the early 80's one) had similar style...so maybe that is what the trends will be in the future!

  4. Absolutely it is one of the finest Scifi movies I have seen. It is set in future where the citizens are only allowed a certain life span. When this time is over they have to voluntarily transcend as they put it. If they run then they are hunted down by a special group that makes sure they transcend. It is an older movie but fantastic. Nice to see the late great Jordan in a great role as well.

It's a classic, but looks dated now.

If you like your sci-fi, though, I think you have to have watched this.

  5. There aren't really in pubs in China Town Per se, but what defines China Town?

My own personal favourite is Corbieres, which is 10 minutes walk from the Nicholas Street area of China Town, but as you are a bit older than me then it may not be quite what you and as importantly your fellow revelers may want . Corbieres.

I must have walked past the end of that alleya hundred times and it's only now that you've posted about it that I recall that there is a bar down there. Never thought of heading down there (maybe should have learnt my lesson re trying hidden gems after going to El Rincon De Rafa)

This place is getting great reviews on-line and is only 5 mins away from where I work. I'm angling to head there after work Thursday! :-)

Edit - Re China town - Can only recall ever having been in the Old Monkey (which is crap). Maybe try to Waterhouse, a Wetherspoons down the road?

  6. Been offered a 4 course meal for £25 each at somewhere called the Podium but we are taking a look at Cloud 23 before hand..

Podium is on the ground floor, I think. Not eaten there, though.

I was disappointed with Cloud 23. The cocktails were poor and over-priced. Just got the feeling that it thinks it's better then it is. I'm afraid I've lumped Podium in with Cloud 23, probably rather unfairly given that I've not been...

TBH I'm quite enjoying using Tesco clubcard rewards in Bella Italia on Deansgate, ATM!

  7. I saw The Road the other day. I loved the book and I was far from disappointed by the film. It's really very, very good. So much of it manages to replicate what was in the mind's eye when reading the novel. Comparing it to other 'End of the World' movies is inaccurate since nobody actually knows what has happened to the planet or why. It could be the US alone that has suffered this catastrophe or it could be the entire world. There is no way of knowing.

I've read the book, not seen the film.

I thought that the characters knew what had happened, it just wasn't mentioned by them. Maybe I missed something?

I also got the feeling that it was effectively a nuclear winter. No summer, ash everywhere from the blasts etc? Again, I could be putting 2 and 2 together!

  8. The Philharmonic in Liverpool is worth a visit.

    Not a bit stringy?

    Gives you wind?

The chairs are really comfortable, but they have a strict seating policy? One per cushion...

Don't they advertise having a world famous boiler? They let a kettle drum up business...

    Sorry!

    Thanks JC4LAB!

I'll give the Bank a try.

Long while since I've been to Grinch, too. Might be time for a return visit!

we had an excellent meal last night...yang little sing yng or something like that ...10/10.

I went to Little Yang Sing a few weeks ago. It was good.

I got a bit too merry, though. Left my laptop there and missed the last train home! Thankfully, the taxi fare wasn't too bad and I managed to retrieve the laptop the next day!

  10. Go the the Wagamama about every other month and like it.but then there are several of us and having company makes a difference possibly.Others I like in the area for pre/post concert nosh are The Bank and the Grinch basically cos of you get such good stuff for about £6-£10 and theres happy hour prices of course..

    Where's/what's the Bank?

    Thanks!

  11. .Had a wander in there last night just for a beer though

Looks ok, said we might try it in future. £3.15 for a pint of bitter :o whats the world coming to.

The corned beef hash was actually a bit crap today...

So much for my 'consistently superb' comment!

Anyone want to recommend any restaurants in New York?

Last time I was there I managed to blag my way into the Four Seasons on the same day that the UN was opening for a new term, or something.

It was superb! Pricey, but great!

Probably best to get a reservation, mind!
