  1. Why didnt mr armchair let us know his true opinions on jeffers, found on the official board. :D

"Jeffers is small and crap in the air too.

Jeffers is small... erm, hardly the biggest of crimes. I didn't know their was a height quota when it came to rating strikers.

I can't say much about the air, because I haven't followed his career closely, but he scored a brilliant header in his England debut, if I can remember correctly.

  2. What?? Who posted first in this thread Abs? Australia crying was a high for you mate?

[Amongst other England excuses] ...the referee's were @#/?...

Sounds a lot like the excuse the Australian media have been cooking up, nevermind the English. ;)

Anyway, I thought it was a good World Cup. I suppose it helps a bit that there was a buzz in this country about it for once, [insert many curse words here]. I was also very impressed by Germany and Italy and I got to watch most of their matches. I hand-picked the matches rather than try to watch as many as I could, so I probably missed out on the dire affairs. Good thing. Plus I enjoyed learning a bit about Germany and its culture, especially since I do German history at uni.

  3. Adieu Zizou.

It would have been truly awful if the cheating french (dive vs portugal although I'm not complaining and clear dive in the final) won the cup.

Alan Shearer is one of these truly naive "life is full of roses" sort of person when he said he thought it was clearly a penalty. You blind al?

Aye. My initial reaction (before seeing the television replay of the incident) was that it was a dive and a straight yellow card for simulation.

There was a clear call in the second half, though, so fortunately things evened themselves out in the end.

Good on Italy for winning, I suppose. They were the best team of the tournament, although not by a mile. It was a shame about Germany and Argentina. I always thought a European team would win it, but Italy wasn't one of them. And neither were France or Portugal.

Zidane tickled my Real Madrid/Francoist hating funny bone with that headbutt of his.

  4. I am very happy we've gone through... but admit totally that we've been very lucky with the refereeing. I questioned having an English referee refereeing that match... and we did seem to get the better of the 50/50's.

Yeah, I didn't think Craig Foster's analysis after the game was fair. He said Poll was a total disgrace, which really wasn't the case, although he was fairly poor.

And for those who watched the SBS broadcast:

What was Les Murray doing letting a drunk Foster on TV? :o He was all over the place. :D

  5. Hee hee. What a referee. I wonder if there would have been a re-match if Croatia won after that D'Urso piece of refereeing.

And what about Emerton? His performance just makes me think it would be stupid to get rid of him on the cheap. Someone just needs to pull his head him; tell him to swallow his pride and admit that he isn't a right rightmielder, but rather a versatile player who can play right wing back. He would look good at right back, one because of his work rate (which would help defensively), and two because he has space for attacking, which he doesn't get playing further up the ground, where he obviously looks cramped. He could be the one to contest Lucas Neill's spot. I wouldn't mind seeing him tried in the centre of midfield either, either defensively or attacking - for a tryout, that is.

  6. can't believe people are defending australia who are one of the dirtiest teams in this world cup.

Yeah, they should be hounded to the ground like that dirty Blackburn Rovers team. Who the hell gave this small time team the right to be competitive against the big boys? It's downright scandalous!

  7. Going to be a long night. Might hit the sack now, and get some sleep before the game

    I had the same idea.

Have to say that Australia is making a good account of itself. Granted, Brazil did cock up two chances, the first by Ronaldinho tripping over his own feet, and the second by Ronaldo missing the ball when shooting. But they are defending well and Emerton has contributed a lot both defensively and in attack. Viduka's holding the ball up well. The referee is very technical with his foul calls at times. Australia has barely had a set piece that hasn't ended in a foul for shirt pulling or a bit of pushing.

Dave, totally agree - theres alot to be done. I think the starting formation will need to be 'tinkered' with. Start with Cahill (for wilkshire) and put Kalac in goal (as he works with Dida).

Also, I think we can safely say Ronaldo (on tonights pedestrian-like performance) wont be starting next game.

Why? I think his superstar status is serving him well and he won't be dropped for this tournament, unless he has a very disastrous performance. He probably deserves to be dropped, but he won't because he's living on past glory. Not that he is a terrible player. He has been very smart and skillful this first half, even if lacking in movement at times.

  8. Dodgy goal...Neill is doing ok, while Bert continues to do his headless chicken impression!!

    Game on.....

Thought Schwarzer was a bit weak about it to be honest. He really needs to be turned on 100% of the time because he's prone to letting easy goals in.

I'm pleased that "my man" Aloisi scored the sealer. :)

  9. I missed the whole Sensible Soccer craze. As I probably haven't mentioned before, I'm still a big Super Nintendo fan and I've gone and paid $10 for Sensible Soccer for the SNES. Will try it out and see how it goes.

I can't believe that anyone isn't raving about how good International Superstar Soccer Deluxe was on the SNES (not sure if it was on other consoles). It might have been because there was a fierce rivalry between my brother, uncle, and his brother-in-law, though. I still play it on occasion. Never get bored of it, but I'm firmly a PES fan now.

  10. I was telling someone today that they shouldn't say Poland will roll over Eduador. They qualified from an extremely tough group and so you would think it would put them in good stead to at the very least be a competitive force.

Poland are hardly a force to be reckoned with.
