I didn't go today so I can't really comment on the atmosphere, but I've been to events that probably have had a similar atmosphere to the one Paul describes, and frankly I've been bored off my tits. The thing that makes football so great is the tension, the passion, the emotional attachment and intensity, the gut-wrenching swings of mood. Even the aggression. Take those away and yes, there may be more women and children in the ground, but football wouldn't be the same for me and thousands of others. I watched most of the match on TV and, while the crowd were clearly noisy and partisan towards England, were they really "into it"? Did they go home in a mood, almost unable to talk rationally for the next hour or so? Did the result spoil their whole weekend? I doubt it. If you don't like that sort of passion Paul then I suggest you're watching the wrong sport. There are plenty of other sports where the atmosphere is friendly, where opposition fans mix, where women and children attend in numbers. They're all boring compared to football. I'm not saying that over-aggressive fans is a good thing - of course it isn't. But without passion and aggression then football wouldn't be football and it wouldn't be the great game it is. Don't get me wrong, there's lots wrong with footy at the moment, but diluting the atmosphere into family-friendly, horn blowing love-ins isn't going to help.

I'd say Gillespie's better than McGrath these days. And neither of them are as good as Harmison.

The only player that really worries me is Warne. Take Warne out of their attack and I genuinely believe that our bowling attack is better. England's bowlers over the last two years have complimented each other brilliantly and there's no reason to think this will change against the Aussies. But we don't have a spinner anything like as good as Warne. Given a suitable pitch he can win a match on his own. It could be that each of the groundsmen are as important to England's chances as anyone. Both batting line ups are fairly equal I think, and if anything we have more depth with the likes of Petersen and Key not even in the first choice eleven. Can't wait.

[Archived] Buying A New Pc
Scotty replied to Scotty's topic in I Can't Believe It's Not Football Archive
I went for the one Biddy recommended above in the end. Got the PC and a laser printer for around £680. Thank you everyone for your advice. Oh, and I now don't want to know if I could have got a better pc cheaper somewhere else. -

I'd looked at Dell but the only problem is that I've already got a 17" TFT monitor - and I don't really want another one. They don't seem to sell just the base unit separately. Although I suppose I could sell my old monitor. I'll have a think. -
[Archived] Buying A New Pc
Scotty replied to Scotty's topic in I Can't Believe It's Not Football Archive
I generally only use my PC to browse the internet, however, I do occasionally work from home and I also play the odd game (I got particularly addicted to the Tiger Woods golf game recently). As for the o/s - my last PC came with XP installed although I think there was a setup disk as well. I'll have a look tonight. If installing XP involves me doing anything vaguely intelligent though I think it's probably worth me paying the £60!! -
I'm going to be buying a new pc in the next week or so as my old one has gone belly up. I only need the base machine, I've got a monitor and all the other stuff. I also don't need any extra software other than the operating system. My budget is up to £1000 but I'd really like to spend less. However, I would like a good one that I'll hopefully be able to use for years to come. I've had a search around and these are a few possibilities that caught my eye: The middle one here The one on the right here This one Now, I know very little about computers so there's no point telling me to build my own - I wouldn't have a clue. However, if anyone could give me advice on the respective merits of the pc's above, or point me in the direction of any better ones for less money, then I'd be eternally grateful. Cheers in advance.

[Archived] Glazer Set For Utd
Scotty replied to ainscough99's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
The other main reason United fans are against the Glazer takeover (apart from the prospect of higher ticket prices) is the level of debt that the club would find itself in. If Glazer aquires the necessary shares and turns the company private he will own a company that is hundreds of millions in debt. That's because Glazer has had to borrow most of the money needed to buy United. It would only take a year or two of losses, or even less-than-expected profits, before some of Glazer's lenders might decide to call in their debts. Then United would be in a Leeds situation. It's all hugely entertaining really. -

To be fair to Glazer, he's been very successful with American football teams (I'm sure our American chums can fill us in here). However, as I understand it, he's achieved his success at the expense of the fans by hiking up ticket prices and basically selling the soul of the club / team. As Man U doesn't have a soul anyway though I'm not sure what he'll do at United. -

The takeover doesn't have to be accepted but Glazer was legally obliged to make the offer once he bought more than 30% of the shares. According the the Shareholders United web-site, Glazer needs to secure 75% of the shares before he can turn the company private. So, if he gets another 16% of the shares it'll be fun and games down at OT this summer. -
No reply from OssyDave yet then?

Yes, it seems the mods / admin are abusing their privileges. Still, I suppose it makes a change from abusing themselves.

I'd just like to point out that I didn't write that last bit. I have no intention of doing anything other than giving them to Ste B so he can ###### it up against a wall.

Love to - shall we say a tenner? Was thinking a little more than a tenner. £50? No probs. I'd have thought £50 would be about a months wages for someone from Ossy but, if you're prepared to not eat for a month then I'll gladly take it off your hands. £50 bet - Everton to finish 6th or higher. May the best man win. I believe that Everton can't finish any lower than 6th now. I'll accept cash or cheque - but no credit cards please. and I intend to donate all my winnings to den.

Including our own manager! What a conundrum.

Very difficult to write a match report tonight because there was so little to report. It looked like two tired teams who were set up to not concede rather than score. In fact I can't be arsed. A mini-report will have to do. I'm also a tad pi55ed. City were better than us in the first half. They worked harder and closed us down all over the pitch. Our defence kept them out though because our defence is ace. City didn't have a shot of note. We didn't have an attack of note. The first half was a non-event. We were better in the second half, but not much better. We had a brief flurry at the start of the half and then the game reverted to a dull midfield battle. Stead had a couple of half-chances that James saved and, apart from that, I can't think of a decent chance for either side. The game was pants basically. Full credit to our defence. I've got blase about them now. I expect them to keep clean sheets and they didn't let me down today. Shaun Wright-Philips, Fowler et al weren't a factor today. Todd and Matteo had especially good games. Our midfield was poor at times. We lost possession too often and got out battled in the first half. Pedersen had his normal sort of game except he didn't score. And when he doesn't score Pedersen's quite ordinary. Reid was energetic yet wasteful, Emerton lively yet annoying, Mokoena was defensive but poor in attack. Thompson came on (for Savage who didn't look fit throughout) in the second half and gave the ball away lots. Up front Stead was poor in the main. He had a couple of snap-shots that tested James but he failed to hold the ball or pass the ball on many occasions. Gally came on late on (for Pedersen - meaning a switch to 4-4-2) and looked impressive - could have been interesting if he'd have been given another ten minutes. It was a poor game, but there's lots of reasons to excuse it. It was a hot, blustery day, the pitch looked hard and bobbley, both teams were tired after 3 games in a week, and both teams were safe in the league. We're on 40 points now. We'd have all given our right knacker to get that many points at Xmas!

Possibly the least intelligent fan preview ever.

He does a job and does it well for the most part. He's not brilliant but he's good enough and Hughes obviously agrees as he's played quite a few games recently. My objections to you are based on the fact that you don't judge him on his performance. You go into a game thinking he's crap and unless he scores a hat-trick, cures cancer, and cancels the third-world debt by the end of the game that's the opinion you're going to take home with you. It's just @#/? but you do the same every week. Oh and I don't think "most observers" think Flitcroft has been poor this season. Just the blinkered ones who know jack about football. Just my opinion.
-
But what's the point of making a well thought out reply? You're so blinkered in your attitude to Flitcroft it's just pathetic. If we win with him in the team it's despite him. If we win without him it's because he's not playing. If we lose with him in the team it's his fault. After every game you post a little comment that slags him off, no matter how well he's played. And, despite what you say, he's played well for most of the games he's taken part in this season. But there's no point arguing because you're too stupid to see it.
