It certainly is a golden oldie, Mike. I have the record (vinyl) of Gerard Hoffnung addressing the Oxford Union sometime in the 1950s where his version of "The Bricklayer" was hilarious. He also tells an equally hilarious story about written replies to queries about holiday accommodation from Tyrolean landlords. e.g. "There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects".

There was an episode of Mythbusters where they tested the veracity of the tale (first fourteen minutes or so)

I assume DeeCee was talking about how we had two captains for a while under TM, with I think it was called a Team Captain, and a Club Captain. Think it was pretty much brought in just for the sake of Bennett or Mulgrew to feel important when they weren't getting in the team, I forget which of them it was.

I have a recollection of it being used in Hughes’ time with Nelson/Samba (possibly to encourage Samba to sign a new contract?). I assumed it wasn’t a regular thing.

  3. Add me to the 'cautiously optimistic' group. Has said all the right things in his (short) time with us, but the real proof comes with the signings, the lineups, the performances and the results. He's got responsibility for three of those things, but the other lies with Broughton, and ultimately, their paymasters.

A little surpised JDT mentioned Waggott selling the club to him. I wouldn't trust Waggott with a school tuckshop.

  4. Realise I'm in a minority here, but lovely to see Sam Ryder top the jury scorecard. Obviously we weren't going to top the public vote for Ukraine (and I should know, the wife and I both voted for them), but it shows what we can do when we put a bit of effort in.

Regal himself is refuting this. Says he's healthier than he has been in years:

I could listen to him talk for hours. Certainly belongs in the conversation of 'best wrestler never to win the world title in a major promotion'

After listening to him talk on Jericho's podcast, I hope my above comment is true and he is healed up now. Certainly deserves it.

Didn’t know about the health issues, though I’ve heard him comment several times how he considers himself very fortunate to still be alive.
