I never liked Ron Atkinson when he became famous because of that match

Well having watched Rovers since the days of Dally Duncan I have to say I would most liked to have played in a Marshall’s Misfits team. Only because, just like Jim, it would have meant playing alongside my hero’s. I think maybe the players you first regarded as the best in your youth remain the best ever, regardless as what comes after.
Howard Kendal must have been some manager though. That shines through in a documentary on Shy called “Howard’s Way” which covers his time at Everton, with interviews with many ex players including John Bailey. Well worth a watch. -
Any mention of Oxford Utd. always sends a shiver down my spine. It’s been that way since Feb. 15th 1964. They still talk about big cup shocks like Hereford v Newcastle and Wrexham v Arsenal but our defeat at the Manor Ground is up there with those and yet is never mentioned

Looking at the stats on BBC you’d thing we were the best team, the problem is they don’t matter one jot. It’s all about sticking the ball in the onion bag. The only stat that counts. That’s the bit that Mowbray doesn’t get.

Corner of Richmond Terrace and Sudell Cross. The next time I saw him was as a car salesman at Leavers Vauxhall dealers. That was in the 80’s

I’m puzzled how Milwall are allowed to play in green and WHITE halves, when you have to change the colour of your shorts if they clash.

One of the best things about old photos like that are the things you’ve forgotten about. A brand of fags advertised there that have been long gone. Regarding the fact that Ronnie was rarely seen in the shop, my cousin was a textile designer and had a lot of contact with Ronnie who was a rep for a tie company at the time.

Yeah it looked tricky underfoot. Lucky nobody got injured.
Was there not some doubt that the game wouldn’t even go ahead because of fog?

Martin Tyler is nauseating about everything. He’s past it as a commentator. He actually doesn’t commentate at all, just mumbles away about anything other than the match.

On this performance I don’t think I have ever seen a more clueless Rovers team than this in my 60 years of following them. TM seems just as clueless as the players.

What a fabulous night that was, and I can remember it like it was yesterday. Sadly realising what has happened since those heady days, in reality it’s more like a lifetime. Nothing can rob us of the memories though.

They're only dirty when they play for other teams, as soon as they pull on the blue and white shirt they're the salt of the earth.
I hated Hughes,Savage and Speedie.......until they joined us

Looks like Fred Else in goal and Mick McGrath. Maybe Mike Harrison in the distance, the photo is a bit blurred. That's the first kit I ever had.
Sorry it’s blurred. It’s March 1965, agree on Fed Else and Mick McGrath. What I couldn’t work out was which ground it is. Facia of stand is either Sunderland, Everton or Spurs. The attacking forward has red socks which would lead me to think Sunderland, but facia is the wrong colour.

Anyone remember Topical Times football book?
Absolutely the best football annual ever published.
My favourite football magazine was undoubtedly Charles Buchans Football Monthly. Maybe it’s an age thing

Here here Bazza. Too many clever dicks these days among so called commentators constantly churning out statistics rather than actually commenting on the game. Tyler being one of the worst.
Oh for the likes of Brian Moore or Kenneth Wolstenhome. -
Tommy Docherty on Lorenzo Amoruso
” Somebody compared him to Billy McNeil, but I don’t remember Billy being crap.”

Another classic from Big Ron
”Well Clive, It’s all about the two M’s. Movement and positioning.”

Love the celebration infront of the Newcastle fans when he got the hattrick goal. They werent happy.
I must be losing it because I had it in mind that Speedie climbed up the fence at the Darwen end after his hat trick goal against Newcastle, but not in the clip. What a player Speedie was.

Another example of historical manipulation. Brockhall first opened in 1907 as an institution for inebriated women, so didn’t exist when the period of the film is set.

This is soo difficult when you consider the players from the UK and Ireland who have played for the club. We were truly blessed with a very high standard over the years. I can’t argue with Shearer or Bellamy in the line up but I’ve always had a soft spot for David Speedie because of how he got us through to the play offs and how he got us that penalty. Also as far as strikers go, even Tyrone hasn’t mentioned Andy McEvoy.

I would definitely have Mike England in the team and also Keith Newton was a better full back than any that have been mentioned

While the family of Paulo Rossi were attending his funeral, some scumbags robbed the house. How low can you stoop?
