[Archived] Ps3 Laser Fault

i have had my 2nd ps3 for just under two years and the laser has packed up again,i oonly had my first ps3 for six weeks and it suffered with the same problem.Has anyone come across this problem before,i think it could be a common fault.Also i am thinking about changing the laser myself there on ebay for about 40 quid,or i could sell the console for about a ton,dont know what to do HELP!!!!!

Not to point out the obvious but have you phoned the sony helpline? I have had my PS3 from the start and have never (touch wood) had a problem with it but from what I have read on the forums the support line is very helpful.

I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it yourself as you could do even more damage that will cost more that say £100 that sony may charge to fix it.

problem is if it does require fixing it will cost upwards of a ton anyway unless you have continuous play (if you dont have it now you will have to wait for them to bevise the t's&c's).

to save you a call to them, have you tried resetting your ps3 to defaults? if that didnt work restoring it?

to reset it to defaults press and hold the power button on the console untill it beeps twice, and select reset to defaults from the list you get. for restoring it, there is a in detail guide on the offical ps forums, i would explain but id rather not risk explaining wrong and totally screwing your ps up lol.

im on a refurb, the bluetooth went on my first one (controlers or headset wouldnt connect) had the refurb about 18 month with no problems

Give the helpline a call and they'll probably just send a refurb round, regardless of how long the warranty is. Great service really.

The same thing happened to mine as it was 20 months old.

The warranty was only one year so when I called the the help line they were not help to me, saying it would cost me $200AUS to repair.

It was cheaper for me to trade it in and buy a slim PS3.

I was extremely angry about the laser going on it as it was not a fault I caused from misuse but the laser just wearing out.

The exact words the help line guy said was "there not designed to last forever, deal with it".

I did a bit of research and it has seemed to happen a bit to the older 40gb models.

A lot of people have got theirs fixed out of warranty by arguing about the Sales of Goods Act. You have to do this through the place you purchased your console from though, not Sony.

So you traded your broken one? Pretty sure they can chase you up on that when they find out it doesn't work

Where did you buy it from? As it is under two years old you should be able to argue that under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the EU directive 1999/44/EC that this sort of fault is unacceptable for this product in such a short period of time. Have to admit that it isn't certain that they will listen to that as it is all a bit unclear, but if you say it to them I would be surprised if they weren't a little bit more helpful.

That law covers things up to 6 years doesn't it Eddie?

It's really unclear as to how exactly impacts cover and warranties, but it's safe to say that most companies will comply within two years if the fault is seen to be unreasonable, as would be the case with this. It's all rather open-ended, but if ever you have a fault with something reasonably expensive that has happened within a period of time that should be considered unacceptable then it should be covered by the store that you bought it from (this is an important part as it doesn't always apply to the actual manufacturer).

I had the same problem (original 40g ps3), the blu ray lense was shot, it wouldn't blu-ray disk but reads cd's and dvd's. Anywho i phoned Sony and they said the model number on mine was over 2 years old, but i got it brought as a christmas present in 08 (it broke mid 09 btw). They said if you have a reciept to prove it they would fix it and send it back (refurb) but guess what majhor highstreet store i got my ps3 brought from... friggin woolworths which had shut down also my ex gf claimed she never kept the reciept and paid in cash. Basically got told its 120notes to get it fixed through sony, was fumming. Anyway Im looking for someone 'cheap' to fix it or gonna flog it on fleabay. (Though i suppose it did mean i got my shiney 250g slimline which is a much much nicer console tbh)

Have you tried to clean the lens? And I don't mean just using a disc cleaner thingy, I mean like opening up the console and cleaning it lol. Very simple to do and it fixed my disc reading problem. And don't worry about needing cleaning fluids, I used a lens cleaning cloth from PC World which worked just fine

Man friend worked for another store of the same franchise and said they don't check them, as they get taken too the head office and have the memory wiped.

I also tried asking the store with the sales act but they said no and that I would have to take it to court so it wasn't worth it.
