  1. I might be completely wrong here but I don't think away goals have ever counted in the play offs. Anyone?

Just been looking for that this is from Wikipedia

Before the 1999–2000 season away goals were used as a tie-breaker after extra time had been played, however, this was abolished following a club initiative launched by then-Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks, after his club had twice lost on away goals in 1997 and 1999.[2] Since then away goals have played no part in the play-off system.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_play-offs

Don't remember this proposal which was rejected, this is similar to the system that they use in Aus for the A league

A change to the format of the play-offs was proposed by Crystal Palace chief executive Phil Alexander in 2003. Alexander recommended expanding the number of teams in each play-off series from four to six, providing more clubs with a chance at promotion. Additionally, the two-legged semi-finals would have been replaced by one-off quarter-final and semi-final games, both of which would give home advantage to the team that finished higher during the league season. The two highest placed clubs in the play-off series would advance directly to the semi-final, while the other four clubs would contest the quarter-final

  2. I noticed there was a player for Newcastle last night called Vurnon ? We used to have a player in the 50's early 60's Roy Vernon, A half back if I remember? Welsh international perhaps? I think we sold him to Everton, where most of our best players went in those days! I wonder what happened to him ?

Died in the early 90's. After Everton he went to Stoke , also played in the US, South Africa and Halifax before finishing his playing career at Gt Harwood and another short spell in South Africa?

Might be getting him mixed up with another ex Rovers player but think he had a Pie shop at the bottom of Griffin St ( Griffin pub end) early - mid seventies, used to go there a lot as a kid they did apple pie and custard as a special on Friday tea times and Saturday dinner

  3. That's a pretty impressive CV! I wonder how he got from Blackburn to the Waltons

Remember reading something a while ago (and if I remember rightly) that his brother or sister was quite ill and the family decided to move to California for the sunshine , think he was about 5 when they moved.

Maybe oldjamfan can shed some light on the above

  4. He was, but I'm sure he grew up in Blackburn didn't he? Sure someone once told me he initially had that shop opposite Barzooka years back?!

He did have a Red or Dead shop at one stage (early eighties) across from where the Library /North Bar was and a small unit where they manufactured somewhere else in Blackburn

Edit: Moved to Blackburn when he was 7 according to thishttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/my-perfect-weekend/10577161/My-perfect-weekend-Wayne-Hemingway-designer-and-youth-ambassador.html

  5. I find that very difficult to believe by the way, but there you go!

I'm going to miss Motorhead massively. Lemmy was a one off. An intelligent punk hippy hooligan - a down right good bloke who played fantastic rock n roll. Cause it was. Just heavier.

Most of all I'm going to miss the shear volume and majesty of the gigs. Nothing has ever come close. There's a massive hole there now unfortunately.

Although I do of course appreciate other music I should add, but alongside the Charlatans and New Order they were the band that has sound tracked my life the longest - or in Motorhead's case - the longest.

Saw Charlatans on Wednesday night, in good form, new album is growing on me. Ash tonight and Buzzcocks Wednesday , quite a busy schedule in Perth for a change

  6. The only places that I can remember making John Bulls when I was still in the Uk was Bryan St (as above) , William St Chippy and the one on Shorrock Lane. The best ones I remember where from Bolton Road (before it became a Chinese).

Tried making them myself but turned it a floating mass of batter mince and potato all avoiding each other

As for size believe the ideal should be when inserted into a barm cake there should be at least a two inch gap between the top and bottom of the barm cake when squashed down :) with no over hang at the sides until first bite

  7. Not liking the new player for live commentary, before you could click a button to listen to opposition commentary, now you have to log into oppositions site to listen to it then log out when game as finished and in to Rovers player to hear the humourous after dinner speech

  8. I must be the only person that feels that Peter Hook and the Cash-In Karaoke (we're not Monaco, honestly) is little more that a second rate tribute act of bands he played bass in.

I like hooky a lot and I really want to like this latest incarnation, but having seen them live twice and both times I couldn't help thinking it felt a lot like a half hearted cash-in. I'm seeing them again at Bingley Music Live in a few weeks (a 90s-tastic line-up with James, Cast, Ash, Super Furry Animals ... oh and Labrinth, Ella Eyre and some radio one DJs for the young 'uns, plus I get to sleep in my own bed, not a tent) so I genuinely hope it's third time lucky.

Saw hook and the light early this year doing the Brotherhood and low life albums with a short JD set as an opener and was a great night , Quite a few of the songs were a lot better than I've heard them played live before and good to hear some ones rarely played live, did not get the impression of somebody going through the motions, which is exactly what I felt when watching the new New Order a couple of years ago.

Only criticism is that Hooky is not doing any new stuff, but might happen now Monaco is basically back together . Was lucky to be around for both JD an NO first time round and don't blame hook one bit doing what he his doing imo better than before, surprised at the mix of the audience over here would say about 50/50 under 25's and older end (a large percent ex pats and few familiar faces that I didn't know were over here)

  9. If you havent watched it alteady you should watch 'the bridge' its the show that the tunnel tried to copy.

Agree the original Danish/ Swedish the bridge is excellent , the American one called the same, drawn out to hell and weak despite being promising in the early episodes

  10. Has anybody watched Tusk (2014) directed by Kevin Smith .

Quite a shallow but strange plot based on a gumtree ad mentioned in one of Smith's podcasts. Knew nothing of the film previously and it came on one of the movie channels, quite dark humour and at the end left me thinking WTF ,it was either quietly brilliant or downright crap.

Michael Parks plays his part well and there is a cameo from Johnny Depp which personally thought didn't work

Would advise not to read about the film before watching as it will spoil the strangeness

  11. Maybe someone here will know, I think I once read in a magazine that a skyscraper in Toronto actually has a "glass floor", I know the picture in the magazine looked down on a baseball diamond, I thought it was right over it.

It mentions the glass floor in I presume the tower you are talking about here , http://www.cntower.ca/en-ca/plan-your-visit/attractions/glass-floor.html

Here you can see the views from the Auckland one. https://www.skycityauckland.co.nz/attractions/sky-tower/explore-the-sky-tower/views-from-the-tower/ which has a couple of glass panels in the floor, the angle of the windows was enough to put me off going anywhere near them, needless to say doing the walk around outside didn't appeal to me in the slightest:)

  12. Some hiking trail Abbey, makes me think of those pictures of builders building a skyscraper decades ago.

I've looked at this and maybe they have something underneath them a few dozen feet away.

    builders.jpg

They probably had a situation like this, not as bad as it first looks but don't fall backwards.

    rockefeller-beam-workers-lunch-construct

Incredible when you think about it the early construction of high rises, takes a certain kind of person I suppose, I was frightened to death when went up to the top of the sky tower in Auckland (inside) and couldn;t move from the inner walls to look out the glass that surrounds it , sent the Mrs to the edge with the video camera so I could look at it later :)
