Its maybe a bit of a patronising cliché but every time I watch womens football (just the major international tournaments) Im blown away by how much it has improved. Goals today have been sublime. Loved the little reverse pass for our third.

Technically they are very good. Well coached as well. Becoming professional has improved the women’s game no end. It used to be awful.

@Tyrone Shoelaces has talked a couple of times about Bryan Douglas hurting Spurs in spectacular fashion about sixty years ago. I always enjoy that tale. Jimmy Greaves played in that game I believe. He raved about Duggie in his autobiography.

Perhaps @only2garners  @Rover Boy and one or two others of our distinguished long time supporters were also at the game?

I was at that game as well. I still believe that was the best rovers side I saw.

    Amazingly, some pics.

Firstly Farington is much much nearer the centre of Lancashire than Old Trafford, especially if you’re considering the old county boundaries that the county game is based on. In fact for quite a bit of old Lancashire Sedbergh is closer than Old Trafford.

Secondly Farington won’t be much less convenient than Old Trafford for many in Lancashire to get to by public transport. The 111 bus runs from Preston to Leyland every 12 minutes passing Preston, Lostock and Leyland stations. I’m off to Old Trafford tomorrow for the Hampshire game and I will need a bus to Preston, train to Manchester and tram to Old Trafford to get there.

I’m also about 2 miles from the new ground, on the 111 bus route!

    Might see you there then👍🙂

Always used to think of Manchester as the capitol of Lancashire but Preston seems to be taking over now after local government organisation. Maybe this is part of it?

The new ground will only be about two miles from me 47er, so personally that’s great. It’s a few miles outside Preston.

For people not living in the area it’s not easily accessible though. Lostock hall station is fairly close but it’s on the east Lancs line, not the main line. There’s Leyland station which is a fair walk especially for the elderly who make up the majority of county championship fans. There are buses but not an ideal way to get from Leyland station to Farington for a cricket match.

On the plus side there is motorway access. There will need to be enough on site parking Though.

At Blackpool today to watch our fine county!  Looks like I’ve been fairly lucky with the weather….

Some good performances by a few of Lancs promising youngsters KH.

Balderson, Bell, Hurst in particular. Blatherwick did well yesterday also.

A good day out. Blackpool Lovely ground.

If you're going down that road, you wouldn't pick any batsman from the modern era in an all-time XI because very few of them would have the skill to survive on uncovered pitches. Crawley's method of plonking his left foot down the pitch and swinging a 3lb bat through the line wouldn't survive one over from Trueman.

Like in football,  picking an all-time XI is an academic exercise and doesn't stand up to scrutiny

No Jim. All I’m pointing out is that Underwood and his style of bowling medium pace spinners was helped massively because of the wet pitches. Spinners don’t bowl at that pace any more because that pace on dry wickets would completely nullify any spin. Other batsmen/bowlers weren’t helped so much.

    In my opinion.

Yeah went to the far east. Sounds like a bit of a shambles to be honest with the groundsmen not putting down the covers properly.

In true Yorkshire fashion no refunds for game. Not surprised it is yorkshite after all. Lancs have decided to take the moral high ground (which I like) by offering free entry to a game at ot to both sets of fans. All well and good but it’s free for members anyway and no self respecting Yorkshireman will watch Lancs.

The Yorkshire weather has fucked Lancs over twice in 3 days. It’s bad enough our own weather doing it

Yes, I know about them not refunding ticket money. It’s despicable of Yorkshire to go down that route.
They put it on their match ticket that play isn’t guaranteed and doing that cleared them to keep every penny of admission money without providing anything in return. The ECB should be looking at that.

  8. Just a comment about Underwood. He was a left arm spin bowler who bowled very quickly and very flat. A medium pacer really. The thing is, he played when wickets weren’t covered. On a wet or drying pitch he was unplayable. Spin bnowlers don’t get that kind of help anymore. Fair to say he wouldn’t be as effective now as he was then.

  9. Brilliant series. Enjoyed every minute of it and didn’t want it to end.

I still think England bossed the Aussies throughout. Australia spent most of the series hanging on to Englands coat tails. Why? Two reasons. Firstly this isn’t an Australia team to compare to previous Australia teams, although it’s still a bloody good one. Secondly, Englands positive approach throughout left them hanging on.

All in all, watching the top players going head to head in any sport is just riveting.

Was it Jim that asked why is Broad retiring? A lot of people will be asking that this morning, although to be fair he’d be nearly 40 by the time the Ashes come around again. What am I going to watch now?

  10. The term “Bazball” is a bit poisonous when it comes to messageboard discussions. Bazball isn’t a thing, it doesn’t exist.

McCullum and Stokes approach to test cricket is, if I understand it correctly allowing players the freedom to go out and express themselves freely and positively, to take the game to the opposition at all times, with no reproach for failure. They’re all professionals and will have to, Will want to, tailor their game to a winning approach.

So forget the term Bazball and tell me why anybody would oppose that.

  11. No I don’t count a game against Ireland.

I keep saying it, barring the weather England would have been going to the oval 2-2 with a great chance of winning the ashes. Plus, on top of that having played the kind of attractive winning cricket that Boycott could only dream of.

Why anyone would criticise the players, captain, coach or anyone else for the kind of approach and record under Stokes and McCallum totally beats me.

I’ve been to a lot of test matches in my life. I’ve seen many of the greats. Enjoyed almost every minute of it. The cricket we’re seeing now is great to watch. Don’t take it for granted and don’t talk it down so much would be my view.

  12. 11 wins from 13 tests before the Ashes was very enjoyable. 2-1 down in the Ashes - which would have been 2-2 apart from the weather. I’m not sure where the idea that England aren’t winning test matches under McCullam and Stokes comes from.

At Lords we were aiming pelters at the head of a one legged tailender. Why is it all of a sudden dangerous to play in, for example, light rain to top order batsmen?

They often will play in light rain, but umpires have to take into consideration the ability of bowling with a wet ball ( have you tried it) and also the pitch getting too wet.
