Which ever way you cut it - his starting position tends to be wide left (usually on the touch line). He is asked to track back to support the left back.

I think, at the moment, part of his success holding the ball, is that he is against smaller full backs. As he continues to improve and build up his strength - I would hope he could start to play more as a traditional centre forward.

As things stand - he is becoming one of our key players - especially for our current style of play.

For me, an example of his improvement was a cross field ball in the last match that he played behind Elliott and into touch. What struck me at that point - was how rare this had become - as I had come to expect these (relatively difficult) cross field balls to find their man.

    Fair enough

  2. I have great confidence in Brereton.  He is young and we took him out of his comfort zone and then played him in a wrong position.  Absolutely appalling management.  Fortunately he is now being played in his proper position and we can see what he is about.

I think eventually we will be saying money well spent.  Oh and every credit to the lad.

Jimmy Greaves for me, if he was through on a one on one the opposition could get ready to kick off again. He had the lot, shots placed past the keeper or a dribble round him, it didn't matter to Jimmy.

Agree, Greaves had the lot and I liked his style when he used to just pass the ball into the net.

However, lest we forget, it was our very own Andy McEvoy who shared the golden boot with Jimmy Greaves.

No we weren't  - our defensive display deserved a point. People moan we don't defend well enough - then when we do they moan.

Sorry but it’s not often I disagree with you but tonight the reason we didn’t ship 3 or 4 was because of their woeful finishing.  Balls were coming through without challenge, how the lad missed that header towards the end was unbelievable.  Pears couldn’t command his 6 yard area without anyone there.  It was pathetic.

For starters he is going to have to strengthen back muscles for frequent picking ball out of net (based on Tuesday).

Possibly adapting to sweeper keeper (which is part of new approach). Understanding how poor our defenders are ie don't assume Douglas will let ball come through to you - need to consider he may back heel and adjust position accordingly ?

You have a point but he has been playing at Middlesbrough

  6. This team has potential.  If Venky’s want to go places then they need to sort out a replacement for Mowbray now!  Give whoever the appointment is time before Christmas window then back him.  There is enough talent in the squad to to get through to the window to keep us within striking distance.   It’s now or never

  7. Gallagher v Brereton.
Months ago I commented that I saw a footballer in Brereton but at that time he was being played out of position.  I took some flack for saying that on this site and bar the odd one or two, the replies where what a waste of money. This season he has been a revelation but consider that he is now being played in position and that resulted in a wonderful performance today.  I think my initial assessment is ok but time will tell?

I also commented about Gallagher in the same post saying that I wasn’t sure and I still am not but he must be played in position, no longer stuck out on the wing like a fish out of water but should be given a chance.

I wouldn’t worry, if we can play like that for the next few months and welcome those players back we’ll be in the top 6.??

Paul, I always look out for your posts as I think we are on the same wavelength but tonight although playing well going forward, I think defensively we are very poor and can be picked off far too easily. I hope you are right and we will get into the top 6 but alas I fear that until something is done about that defence albeit in terms of personnel or set up then we will really struggle to beat inferior teams on a regular basis.

Damn shame when we play reasonably well, Big Ben scores a world class goal & 17 year old Elliott stars in his first game that the defending frailties are still with us. Lots to learn from tonight. Kaminski needs to look at his game - comes out his area a long way. We need a new penalty taker.

We lost yet we could have easily won this one.

We look ok going forward but defending we look like the railway tavern on a Sunday morning.  This problem has been going on far too long.  Something needs to be done and done quickly.  People are talking about top 6, but if nothing is done about that defence in terms of personnel or set up then I am worried about bottom 3.

He delivered by getting us promoted and moving the club into mid table safety.

He did deliver but let’s be honest promotion from league 1 was the simple bit for a club of our stature.  We where up against the likes of Shrewsbury for heavens sake.  He did get us into mid table safety but some of his decisions have been abysmal when playing players out of position, how many right sided players did he play on the left?
I believe now we have a squad, at least on paper that can compete, so having got his recruitment sorted, he needs to deliver, otherwise he will be on his bike and quite rightly.

I think that is a tragedy, with the recruitment of a half decent left back who is able to defend properly and who will balance the team, I honestly believe we can make a challenge.  Sure we will need luck on the injury front but any team promoted does.

This coming year with what has happened and money being scarce for every club, then now is the time to risk a gamble and go for it.  In any walk of life, successful companies have always taken a punt at the correct time, and while others struggle then I believe now is that time.  Have our owners and management got the balls to do it?

  12. Today was good and we can only play what is in front of us.  However, anyone who has played football knows, we need a new left back for Two reasons.

1  We need better defence in that area when pressure is on, particularly when we are playing better teams than Wycombe.

    2. We also need to improve the balance of the team, without the need for central defenders being pulled out of position to cover in that area.
