I reckon the personnel for the first game will look something like this. Not sure if I have the formation correct though

I think if Mulgrew plays in a 3 then he has to be central. The wide centre halves can get exposed and left 1 on 1 a bit in that system.

He doesnt have the legs for that spot for me anymore.

I don't see how it can go from, "we'll hope to have two coming in tomorrow", to now Sharpe saying, "hopefully we'll know more next week.

Mowbray keeps saying things and promising things he shouldn't. Started at that meeting at Ewood when he said "new defenders are coming" and we've yet to sign a single one.

To be fair I think Sharpe said that before Mowbray said 2 will be coming today. But still it doesnt look like 2 will be signing today unless the fax machine is broke again and someone manages to fix it quick

  3. The word experience gets used a lot on here of late. I dont care if the CB or GK is experinced, I just want them to be good and better than what we have now.

Its that simple really. Improve the team.

Apart from Graham, all our experinced players where pretty poor last year and we spent a season crying out for youth.

Buying would make most sense. I think all things considered it would be one of the better options after Forster. A better and more direct replacement for Raya.

Im inclined to agree. Watched quite a lot of Wigan games and he always impressed.

At this stage he isnt as good as hart and forster, but his wages and the finaces involved will reflect that and be far more inline with our structure

  5. Walton makes sense and seems to represent our recent transfer plan.Young, english, played for england at all youth levels.

He is also a fair unit and a lot more commanding of his area than Raya

For whats is worth Wigan have had carson and walton and the wigan fans I speak to would all rather have Walton.

He was a lot better than Raya in League one and would surely have been in the team of the year ahead of Raya if loan players werent banned from the vote for some reason.

Not the sexy name after all the specualtion, but really taking finance, age etc in the the equation,he could be the best long term option of the lot

  6. The modern fan has a championship manager approach to everything where you just buy buy buy to improve. Improvement can often come within with good coaching and players improving. Its not the sexy approach but why employ coaches etc if thats not the aim. A few players improve a bit and a young player or 2 steps up and you can improve a hell of a lot and not spend a penny

Or it could be a 433 without a Target man so that they are interchangeable (like Liverpool). This is perfectly feasible so long as you aren’t going direct into the likes of DG which is what Mowbray spoke about.

The only question about 433 is how does it suit Dack? Other than that, I like it.

I think it suits Dack bigtime. He is good enough to play any of the 3 and chage about at will.

The question is how would it suit DG. He doesnt have the legs or pace to drift out wide and interchange much

Baffling to me that some are happy for us to essentially wait until the deadline to get players in, giving them no time to bed into the squad or have any kind of pre-season getting them used to their team mates and how we set up. Just throw them in the deep end and hope for the best.

I dont think anyone is happy with that approach, but its what happens to everyone except the super rich with transfer windows. Most of the time a ll relevant parties are holding about believing they can get better or more and so on it gos until the deadline arrives and people are forced to react and make a decision

Its not ideal, but this is modern football

Carson also got dropped he mustn’t be a steady performing keeper either.

To be fair he was Derbys player of the year the 2 years before Lampard arrived, so it depends which way you look at it.

We are not a pull for players, not even in this league, so anybody we sign is going to have some slight question marks over them

Also, back to the keeper. Surely we would have to be waiting on Carson to be replaced at Derby, they have nobody of note behind him.

He wasnt the starter at Derby last year. Lost his place under lampard as he wanted a sweeper keeper style keeper and he didnt think carson could play that role
