    QUOTE (NEARREY @ Jul 14 2004, 08:47 )

I feel the decision is ultimately right, people get all messed up by Cole's upturn in effort in the last half dozen games and suddenly he's a crowd favourite. Up til then he was getting (justifiably) a lot of stick from the crowd (and this messageboard).

That's about the most accurate statement I have seen on the Cole issue. It seemed like for a season and three quarters everyone wants shut of Mr Offside, hands on hips, won't chase, can't hit a barn door Cole, then he has a couple of games where he breaks a sweat and people think he's great. If he goes great, if he stays not as great.

For the Souness out bandwagon, does the report not say a decision was made at a board meeting, Cole has clearly taken the huff and his ego is bigger than the boss'. So sod off. It's a TEAM game. It's Blackburn Rovers, not Cole's Rovers. The man felt threatened by Dickov what a pussy, he was afraid of having his lack of effort shown for all the world to see.

This post was so big I had to split it

  2. Jan I think you're maybe dreaming up these race accusations. I know there have been claims that Cole, Yorke and McCarthy have been lazy at times, but I can't remember anyone ever really criticising Jason Roberts for any reason??? I think aswell a lot of people thought Nonda just wasn't good enough.

If it was a colour issue, then why is Samba fast becoming a club hero?

I think you need to provide us with some evidence before you start accusing sections of our support.

Actually I suspect that's to do with differing expectations. Defenders are expected to be rocks at the back, not scurry around after lost balls which someone useless like Dickov did (and which talented strikers are therefore supposed to do and thereby knacker themselves for the chances they do get).

And Samba has not yet done anything to provoke frustration. When people are frustrated with players, they go to stereotypes, and as they can't use the label they want, they use a euphemism. I also suspect that the same people who called the above players for being lazy conveniently ignore Samba's colour- or at least they will do until he does something to annoy him.

I'd liken it to Andy Murray (or any other Scottish sporting hero)

    British when he's doing well

    Scottish when he's not.

  3. i would put it down to a bad day at the office and give him a couple of games,if he still plays as bad then we should have concern.

However i wonder if we would have been as negative about him if all the summer speculation hadn`t have happened.

As for the moron who suggested that people didn`t like Benni because of his colour, that is the most stupidest thing i have ever heard.

Frankly it is an insult to the intelligence of Rovers fans to say such things. <_<

Not really. And I stand by it. In my defence I cite:

    Cole

    Yorke

    Roberts

    Nonda

    McCarthy

Who've all been tarred on here by the same brush.

  4. What a fantastic manager Hughes is. The thing I like best is his positivity. Under Souness we were led to believe that finishing 17th and going out of every cup at the first round was acceptable for a team like us. When Hughes said a couple of years ago that he aimed to get into Europe it sounded like he was getting carried away but we did it and a large part of that is because of the confidence he gives the team by being so positive. I think having a great manager can make a team like Rovers punch way above our weight whereas if a different choice had been made 3 years ago we could juyst as easily have been in Burnley's division now. All credit to the Board for getting the right man.

Who were the 8 people who were angry about his appointment? I think they should be named and shamed. I was in the "YES" camp I think but without a great amount of enthusiasm but he has proven to be a fantastic appointment. The best ever maybe bearing in mind what he inherited and the resources he has had................

The "Angrys" were probably Tris and the Trisettes who hadn't got over the previous "manager" leaving.

I totally agree about positivity. I always thought "this is a small town club who won the Premiership- why, suddenly, is just avoiding relegation the objective? And why the heck did we go for 6th place only to be told that the "manager" would rather spend Thursday nights having dinner with his wife?" It's amazing what a bit of ambition and someone not waiting to retire will do for you.

I wanted Strachan, Hughes in that order. When you come to think about it, I got both!!!! And both have done brilliantly at their respective challenges. And Mr Hughes wears suits almost as well as Mr Mourinho!!!!

Maybe we should get him an anniversary card? (Shopping, YAY!!!!!!)

  5. Went to Dagenham and Redbridge v Lincoln on Saturday. Away fans only had terracing so had to stand. Will now be a militant AGAINST standing because:

    It allows scummy blokes to gather round you and make lewd comments. And follow you when move to get away from them;

    It's REALLY uncomfortable;

It's not terrifically safe. Lincoln didn't even score and I had to escape people who decided to surge forward when they were cross about decisions- and this was in an end that wasn't even half full.

    First and last time standing.

  6. Think you talk a lot of sense at times but that is just a nonsense attitude. Why don't we all just pack up and start watching the big 4? If your only reason for watching football is to see a team that could win stuff then that's missing the whole point. It is the very same attitude of all the so called Man U fans in towns all over the country that don't watch a local team as they don't see the point either. Luckily there are thousands of others that enjoy seeing their local team and keep football what it is in the local leagues.

Why not sack off the bottom three leagues and just have big franchises in each city? Sadly Blackburn will have to as well but we can at least see us winning stuff if we go and watch the Manchester All Stars can't we?

As ever, a rant given without actually reading what Phillipl had to say. The point he was making was that the football played at Ewood was much more entertaining than the do or die "lump it" stuff played in the lower leagues. Having watched League 2 quite a number of times this season, Phillip is absolutely right. Lower league football is not about skill it's about 20 not very good players (with the odd two who might make it at a higher level) passing a ball neither quickly nor accurately, around a muddy field. If they had jumpers for goalposts you wouldn't be surprised.

I suspect people are (again) harking back to the old days when football was "for the masses" and you could "go to the game, stand up, have a pie and a pint and have change from sixpence". I experienced that only a couple of times at Ayr United. I have no desire to do so again (in fact after those occasions insisted we went into the stand where you could sit and enjoy the game. Oh and- being 5 foot 4- SEE!). Like it or not, football is now about entetainment, and people who go to football want to see high quality entertainment. I suspect that's why some of us were so annoyed- even given the result- at the Charlton game, as our team so obviously under-achieved given what they're capable of. Even saying that, the product at Charlton/Blackburn was 1000% better skill wise than the second division.

Enjoy lower and non-league football if you like exploring your working class roots and wwandering down memory lane, but if you enjoy skill and entertainment, it's the Premiership every time. Yes, even Bolton!

  7. To be fair, I turned to Tris after one of Dunny's runs and said "That's what I've been waiting to see out of him" and Tris agreed. Just because he put in a good game doesn't mean the other stuff said was wrong.

And Jan, you should be one to talk about agendas. You were the one admitting to me that he completely bailed on Brum and refused to play. This proves Souness right, as he said Dunn's problem was his mindset.

My point was more along the lines of Hughes worked with both Souness and Dunn and bought DUNN back for the club (while clearly not being overly respectful of Souness). That's enough for me to know who was right. And yes, I think Dunny was fitter at Brum than he played. I don't necessarily think he was wrong for doing so. One of my friends has just moved from here- in a job she enjoyed- because of a deeply unpleasant boss. Now he's leaving and she's handed her notice in (after 6 months) and is coming back. In football Dunny didn't have that option (you can't just give notice). I think if she'd been stuck there, she'd probably have done the same as Dunny did and gone through the motions with a lot of sick leave until she could go.

  8. jan, whilst i don't have a problem with you, it does seem that you are incapable of having a discussion about what tris said and debating the points that he makes no matter how outlandish. it seems that 99% of your posts are based on waiting for an opportune moment, to make an attack on somebody...because your brain and lack of cells, don't permit you to have serious discussions about football. that aint your fault, i guess because they say talent skips a generation....so i guess your kids are gonna be sharp as tacks.

tris - my goodness, are you willing to take back all of that post and give credit where credit is due, because yesterday, if ever there was proof that dunny is at peak fitness...then we all saw it before our eyes. he was marvellous!!

I'd take that better from someone who actually knew where capital letters should be used. Criticism would come better from someone who can use English (note the capital letter) correctly.

Also, admitting I was right in your second paragraph somewhat degrades the rest of your post.

I disagreed with Tris's post when it was made, but contented myself with pointing out his agenda at the time. On the rest, I bided my time because it was obvious to a blind man that Dunny was gettting better and fitter. (Obviously that is to those WITHOUT an agenda). I'm glad for the club and supporters that we've got a fit and fantastic Dunny back, and I'm glad for Dunny that his detractors have to eat the largest slice of humble pie possible. And hopefully will continue to do so. How many games in a row has been fit for now?

  9. £1.5 million for Dunn is without doubt Hughes's worst signing pound for pound. Fat boy would have been free next month - had he really wanted to move to Rovers for football reasons he could have signed a pre-contract in January and got himself into shape to be able to tackle a Hughes pre-season.

As it is he's used the Bolton situation to force Rovers to pay good money for him, signed a contract on his terms, and now he's living where he wants to live, drinking where he wants to drink, and there is no chance he will ever be match fit or match capable at the top level ever again.

I strongly suspect Hughes didn't really want this signing - he doesn't risk money on lazy idiots. It looks like a publicity stunt which has gone badly wrong - today it cost us points as well as money.

Had to bring this sheer idiocy up to the top. After yesterday I think it's safe to say that Hughesy was right, the board was right, and you were WRONG,WRONG,WRONG. As usual.

  10. I was waiting to see who'd be the first to make Dunn our latest scapegoat after his mis-placed pass today - should have guessed really. Your increasingly hysterical posts on Dunn clearly show you lost all perspective on this some time ago and are now hoping and praying he'll fail so you can stick the boot in.

That one post sums Tris up. Anyone who's been on the board for any time knows the reason for Tris's behaviour, so disregard it. Or just say "He's left you, get over it"

  11. I wouldn't have Roberts on the bench. I get the injuries, but he's been trogginly useless whenever I've seen him play this season. He was no improvement on Benni yesterday AT ALL. At least Benni, when he gets the balll CAN pass to our own team. If, by some miracle Roberts does, it goes straight to the opposition.

As a team, we have to stop the "waiting in front of the man to slip him when the ball comes" play. Good defenders can read that and simply come in front of the player to get the ball. I lost count of the number of times that happened yesterday.

I went expecting a tonking. We got less of a tonking (performance wise) than I expected.

  12. I should imagine that is right to an extent, but would you rather a man who stand up and be counted and be able to defend your honour, or be rather filing their nails and watching desperate housewives?

Or to put it another way, Martin Corry, the Burgomasco brothers, or David Beckham and Christiano Ronaldo?

    .

    Christiano Ronaldo isn't pretty

Of that lot- David Beckham, please! Or Brad Pitt, or Josef Browne (PLEASE)- use google!

    Again apologies for the digression.

I just felt so proud to see Derbs and Bentley (also pretty) there, and when they kept congratulating each other.......... (there were tears)
