Williams, Evans & Samuel wouldn't start for me.

Then you might just have lost a bit of the team spirit.

Dropping promoted players straight away...no good reason. The squad wouldn't have that. I think TM will phase Bell in and one or two others.  It's a long season and the lads that got us up at least need to get the first game.

Think this is a little unfair on Downing. He came in to replace Ward (when he was a liability) and Lenihan was out. He was an important element in our upturn in results post Oldham away.

Fully fledged Championship defender, I’m not sure, but more experienced than Wharton? Absolutely! I trust TM’s assessment of centre halves.

It’s not unfair.  He might be able to slot in a top 2 side against very mediocre forward lines at times, but mark my words if he plays centre half in the championship he will get taken to the cleaners by the quality in this league.  He’s a plodder, a bit better than Evans, but my god Evans really was poorr.  He also happens to be the son of Tony’s mate.

We cant just make do in this league, we need some serious signings in defence or we could be in for a long season

Wharton should have been promoted ahead of Downing in the pecking order for me and retained.

Is anyone actually happy with the prospect of Downing and Greer as back up?

Totally, totally with you on this....Downing has gone under the radar a bit due to our good form in L1 and our non-reliance upon him.  My view is that he's not L1 level and any games that he plays in the championship will end in defeat.  He's not up to quick quality attackers.  Slightly better than that other dolloper who came about the same time as him.....Elliot Ward..?

To seriously stay in this league we need 2 x quality defenders extra

The team is good enough to stay ..

    It's not.

I like mowbray but the lack of activity is alarming for me. Conway I don't understand, surely a younger quicker player could have his wages.  If we lose either CM or DL we've got nothing to cover.  Graham will revert back to looking lathargic......we need an injection of 4/5 starters

I can't see Southgate changing anything. If we had the personnel in the squad to make significant changes he might do but we haven't. We haven't a player to man mark Modric. It's a specialised role and not many players have that ability. They way the refs are these days and the way clever players draw and exaggerate fouls no marker would last the whole game.

The days of Nobby Stiles giving Eusebio a good kicking and staying on the pitch are long gone.

The way Modric gets about the pitch whoever marked him would be very tired by the end of the game. He must be an Olympic class athlete as well.

I think he will drop lingard for Delph to add a bit more bite to the middle. Hemderson will get over run off modric rakitic and pereseic.

I’m not saying that Davenport is the second coming of Tugay or anything, but it really does make me smile and remind me of this footage when I see people lamenting the chances being reduced for Tomlinson et al.

Perhaps an extreme example, but if Tomlinson was better or even close then of course you would question the logic of signing Davenport - unfortunately you kind of have to just trust the manager’s judgement.

It is only time that will tell.

Unless Willem shagged Tony’s wife or something, or Davenport is Kentaro.

I for one look forward to seeing him play.

He just isn't good enough. I'd imagine non league beckons

I was under the impression that that had always been ruled out in the past on segregation and safety grounds.

I find it very disappointing ST holders can't claim their own seats. Looks like We're falling into the usual trap we do when a "big" Club comes to town of trying to make a quick buck by filling the ground with away fans as opposed to taking a long term view and getting floating home fans in who might want to see an attractive game.

Yep. I don't like these type of friendly games.  Perhaps 5k rovers and 10k Scousers taking the pee.  No ta
