I thought he was good, but it feels like his attitude is the problem wherever he goes.
Definitely not a Mowbray type player - not hungry enough and has had enough chances to take his career seriously.

Brian Clough was about as good as you could ever get.
True - couple of caps again though. Another from way back when as well.
Was thinking more recently really.

Bobby Robson was great manager. His achievements with England, Ipswich and Newcastle was excellent.
Yes Stuart I agree with your embarrased comment when they sacked him
I said Bryan Robson
Bobby Robson is about the only one. Terry Venables as well perhaps but he was only capped twice by England.
Edit - wrong quote - meant for Stuart.

They’re all foreign though. 2 of those were given teams which even Owen Coyle could succeed at.
It’d be nice to see a recently retired England international do well, but it just doesn’t happen. The last one which managed in this division was Stuart Pearce, and he was bloody awful.
Away from Championship, Neville, Barnes and others have failed. Even Gareth Southgate’s a failure in my eyes for his relegation at Boro.
The only ex-England international I can think of as doing well in my life time is Steve Coppell.
Keegan "i Would bloody love it", was almost successful and probably should have been with that Newcastle side.
Bryan Robson another failure.
It really is difficult to think of any ex-England international to become a successful manager.

Am I only one who would be underwhelmed by Pilkington? Seems like a sideways steps and I can't see him bring much more than Conway. Will be 30 shortly and we need wingers with pace desperatly.
Kind of agree...good player I suppose, and a winger which we need but this rumor has hardly got me all giddy with excitement. Close to 30, no sell-on value and not exactly pacey. To me he would be a slightly younger and better upgrade on Conway.

There was nothing to suggest during King's time here he'd be significantly better up front. When he played wide for us he couldn't hit the proverbial cow's backside with a banjo. The FA Cup games were right towards the end of his time here and he'd obviously made up his mind to move by then.
Maybe Howe shouldn't have moved him from up top but many players would get their heads down and do a job wherever they were asked to play. King obviously isn't one of those type of players
Would Gestede or Rhodes have done any better on the wing?
There was something to suggest he was better up front as when he did play there during the cup games, he got the goals and looked the part. You say its because he wanted a move - I say its because iits his natural position and was finally played in his best position. Players with a bit of pace often get shunted out wide but pace alone does not make a winger.
Yes he was unfortunate to have Rhodes and Gestede banging them in and was obviously shoehorned into another position but it is plain to see that Howe saw something that Bowyer didnt - hence snapping him up and immediately putting him into a starting PL 11.

I think having the pick of city and Chelsea's kids will help. He's a very intelligent likeable person. He has an IQ of 157 so he's a smart lad. He has a wealth of football experience and will be respected from the off. I know he has no managerial experience and until he starts managing no one really knows how well he is going to do I just believe he will do well and has all the qualities to succeed.
Never knew that - doesnt sound smart though but that might just be that awful cockney accent.

There's a lot of sentimental revisionist rubbish being spoken about King now he unexpectedly had one outstanding season in the Premier League.
He didn't get in our side up front because we had two guys in there who scored 41 goals in a Season. When he had the chance to impress from a wider position he invariably stank the place out and only decided to put a bit of a shift in when he was looking to put himself in the shop window during the FA Cup games.
Seems history is now repeating itself at Bournemouth, he's been asked to play in a slightly different position, his form has tailed off and the dummy has come out of the pram.
He has a 1 in 3 record across three seasons now in the PLfor a bottom of the table team - bit different to one outstanding season? Might suggest why others are willing to throw 20 mil at him.
During those FA cup games he invariably showed what he could do in a forward role and was never given a chance in the league - shunted out wide. Its quite obvious he plays better up front so why the hate because he aint much cop as a winger? Stick Rhodes on the wing and see what he can do.

King was pretty mediocre or injured when he played for us. He probably responded to Eddie Howe and his coaches better than ours, just like Mark Hughes could get Craig Bellamy to perform.
I dont think he ever had a consistent run of games - not up top at least. When he did play he played well i thought. He had the pace and ability to cause problems. I just think he did not suit GBs style and was therefore forfeited more often than not. Still to this day I would have liked to have seen a Gestede/King partnership persevered with.

Lampard will aim high and try to get promotion this season despited the cutbacks..
Surely Shearer had footballing experience and 'worldwide contacts' - so are you basically saying Lampard will do well because of his uncle?
In that case - Jamie Redknapp should have gone into management - imagine how his dad could have helped him. Darren Ferguson has shown just how much a good manager as a father can help.

Looks like failing to go up this year is going to be pretty brutal for Villa. Apparently they need to raise £45m through sales just to avoid sanctions. They've spent £150m in the last three seasons. Wage bill is horrific.
They could be in pretty bad shape next season.
No wonder all the 'Grealish is worth at least 30 mil' news articles floating around - they are hawking him off to at least cover half that.
They have hit the ceiling after years of gambling on promotion. They have no choice now and it could damage them in the same way it has us - they will have to run as a normal championship club now.

King wasn't good enough for Rovers at the time. The potential was there, obviously, but he was raw and inconsistent and didn't warrant being picked ahead of those two. His skills and his game needed time to mature at another club and Bournemouth was the perfect place for him.
They plucked him from us after getting promoted and he has pretty much been a regular since then. So not good enough for us in the Championship but good enough to be a regular starter just a few months later int he PL?

Here's an article about it.
Josh King takes aim at Eddie Howe to throw Bournemouth future into doubt (Lawrence Ostlere, The Independent)
Scored 16 goals the previous season in a striker's role, and then gets moved into attacking midfield. That's just bizarre. If there's a disagreement between him and Howe, which sounds like there is if he's gone public, then he'll be off. You don't speak out publicly against your boss unless the relationship has broken down.
I also reckon King might have been frustrated with the World Cup coming up. If he'd kept up his form of the previous season, he may well have been going to Russia.
Ah Josh King, the striker playing in the PL but couldnt get into a team ahead of Rhodes and Gestede in the Championship...funny how things work out. Now he could be going for 20+.
Lets also hope Cairney does well up there and secures a big move.

Yup - sounds like Villas decision - they simply cannot afford this spending anymore with FFP.
Seems they missed the boat like we did and will now have no choice but to tone it all done and possibly even face sanctions.

I understand why you would say that but he's at that point in his career now with the experience he has where he simply has to play. It's sink or swim time for David . It's going to be a defining season for him with rovers next year. He's either got it or he ain't. After an early wobble he certainly deserves to be our number 1 come August with some of the performances he put in. That save at Peterborough was friedelesque ( that is a word. It's in the dictionary)
Still so very young though, not sure its sink or swim. Keepers do not mature until much older and I can understand upping the level of competition he has right now, he needs to be challenged to perform. He has come on leaps and bounds this season but still has his weaknesses and will be coming up against MUCH better players and teams this time around.
The Canadian was nothing but league manipulation

Leutwiler was obviously only brought in to ensure we didn’t play on international weekends.
Fielding is an established Championship keeper and it keeps a talented, yet still a little raw keeper on his toes - a Blackburner too!
Would be a canny signing.
This - said all along this was so we did not have to play without Mulgrew..and in a small part...Evans.
Quite smart in the end from TM, why should we without a key member of our squad, especially in a position so important?

A bit too much bigging up other clubs here for my liking.
I accept it is a formidable looking league for all concerned given the amount of 'big names' in there and a lack of 'small clubs'.
I'm not really comfortable with Mowbray referring to the likes of Middlesbrough as a huge club or Sheffield United with huge expectations. Neither of those are huge clubs compared to Rovers, in any measure. Middlesbrough have been throwing the cash around and that's about it.
Agreed, some would think that we have been in L1 for 10 years and have just made the step up or something. We were ably competing with these clubs and beating alot of them for years before last season.

Bruce is just a poor mans Mick Mcarthy ?
On Villa though, it just doesn't seem fair that they can splash such cash and get away with it
That is what Shrewsbury fans said about us this season.
All the relegated clubs do it to some extent as an immediate return is paramount. We did it and failed, Villa did it on an even bigger scale and have failed and there will be others that fail in the future.
What irks me more is clubs like Wednesday and Derby that have been spending millions for years in the hope of getting up and are somehow not being asked questions by FFP.

Ya, they will destroy a club if under performing. Vila in big trouble. Very difficult to bounce back after losing a play-off final. Unless you are WBA under Mowbray
Will Bruce stay I wonder?
Will they want him to stay? He has failed this season especially after what has been spent.
Cannot see Terry staying now either - he might have considered it in the PL for a year but not now i doubt. Plus there is the fact of his massive wages.
Their style of play hardly looked too attractive against Fulham either, so not sure fans will be content with Bruce. Fulham on the other hand looked excellent and they have built a team up over many seasons rather than splashed loads of cash.

You would imagine so ya. Their wages must be astronomical, mostly Premier league players on the books. Then there are the fees. 12 million for Scott Hogan, Kodija 15 million was it? i would say they have spent as much as Wolves or Newcastle when they went up
30 million? Lucky for them he declared for England.
Massive gamble that hasnt paid off - their parachutes will run out soon in the next year or two as well I imagine.
So glad we have finally got rid of most of our high earners and wastes of space and have a more structured wage at the club.

6 caps i think.
This is where some are going a little off with this - we are talking established England players that have gone on to be top managers. People have mentioned Clough - which..hello of course he was one of the very best but had 2 caps for England. Venables similar.
Look at the likes of Pep, Ziidane, Frank Rijkard, Luis Enrique, Cruyff, Simeone and the like that have gone on to become successful managers.
i just wonder if foreign players are just mentally smarter than our players and know the game. In the modern era we have not really had any former 'top' England international to go into management and do well.
