A player barely any of us would have suggested as a target two weeks ago and who is a definite gamble (and can’t get into Forest’s First XI) is suddenly an £8m investment to make £20m sale. Be honest that’s a bit of a stretch.

There is better value out there if you have the money to spend - which everyone believes we do...

    McGinn to Villa, £3m

    Marriott to Derby, £3m

    Waghorn to Derby, £5m

    Bamford to Leeds, £7m

    Grabban to Forest, £6m

    Baldack to Reading, £3.5m

People are getting a little carried away at the whiff of cash and want to ignore the Venkys history that the “doom mongers” (ha!) are cautious of.

So because no one on here was naming him as a target then we shouldn't looking?

Waghorn? There were many on here were horrifed we were looking at, now you are giving him as an example of someone of better value

We looked at McGinn we were blasted out of the water by Villa on wages and it is possible we looked at Bamford with the same out come. Looks like they are spending less on fees but higher on wages. At the end of the player's contract the outlay will have been the same or even higher. High earning players have cost this club dear in the past and it does appear we have a rigid wage structure in place.

Grabban could get you goals but £ 6 million for a 30 year old is a gamble. If he fires Forest up then its money well spent what happens if Forest don't go up? Will there any chance of getting back on a 31 year old?

Marriott and Baldack time will tell and do look good value compared to Bereton.

The price we are looking at does look steep and I'm very aware of recent history but if Venky's were to pull the plug again it does not matter if the money has spent on one, two, three or four players it will still be pulled and we'd still be in debt.

I'm not a huge fan of Mowbray because of his over cautious approach at times. At times during the summer it appears it has cost us in the transfer market. It seems very strange that he has gone out on a limb on this one player. Why?

Wouldn't say that Dack was a one season wonder before he came here but even if he was that is still one season more than Brereton and at less than 1/8th of the price.

When we signed Dack some Rovers fans said it. Dack had had a terrible season for Gillingham after winning the league 1 player of ther year the year previously.

The amount is irrelevant the principal was the same in that it was the majority of a budget that many said was not there.

  3. Those saying if the player is a flop then Venky's may turn the tap off well what happens if we don't spend it? Venky's may turn the tap off thinking we don't need it.

What happens if the Bereton does not move and gets in to the Forest team does well then goes for £20million. Will the doom mongers then turn and say say why did we not pay the bargain of £8 million.

All transfers are a gamble that may or may not come off.

We have to be cautious of course but it nice to see us even talking about such vaules being talked about again.

The way Dack has started the season the £750,000 we gambled on a one season wonder at Gillingham looks like it could repay 10 times over like the the money we gambled on Davies cost us £3 million.

Proven goal scorers who we could get a return on are only interested in premier league. All the multi million pound players I dare say will be a calculated gamble or are players there will be little return on.

QPR don't have quality player and McClaren hasn't had millions to spend loads either. 2 players in both on free transfers

Why Holloway was ever sacked I don't know But I don't blame McClaren but the owners and their director of football Les Ferdinand. Its been cut backs after cut backs since they got relegated and Redknapp left. What are the aims for this season?

and yet we bid 4.5 million for one on deadline day.

If Armstrong repeats his Bolton performances his value won't go up at all. Let's see what happens out on the grass, paper talk is meaningless.

Thats the gamble in the transfer market but if manager's worried about that they never sign anyone.

Lambert refused to go and speak to Venky’s for a couple of days every few months, Mowbray has (correctly) done the opposite and has managed to build up a good relationship with them, which has been good for the club.

To be fair, LAmbert never met them at all. He was hired by their British representative and was only dealing with him. He made promises that were not met.

Lambert has made a fair few quid by going to clubs mid-season and walking at the end of that season so his stock is now badly tarnished.

Less than 30 million? Wickham has a lot to prove. His goal record is bad. I think they championship he may be worth a punt , but I would also like another more prolific striker.

Genuine question - which prolific strikers are going to be available on loan? It is going to be an unproven or journey man.

Millwall are a solid tall hardworking unit and over ran Rovers midfield in the first half Smallwood was dragged all over the place leaving Evans and the defence exposed. Nonetheless Rovers had the chances to win it but were found wanting in front of goal DG should have scored at least 2 and squared for the easiest goal BD would ever score.

it was a hard won point in the end.

positives to take Rays didn’t have a save to make so hats off to the defence.

rothwell  and Palmer both impressed as did Evans once Smallwood was subbed.

Rovers desperately need width and a tall striker with pace.

negatives - Smallwood dragged all over and not compact enough.

some of the passing first half was dire.

finally all of the pitch invaders from the last match of last season where were you yesterday? 13000 not a good show of faith.

I actually think that although Smallwood did get pulled out of position easily I think Mowbray got his tactics wrong in the first half playing too wide. Once both Palmer and Bennett played a little narrower in the 2nd half we started to get a stranglehold of the game. The sacrifice in width though caused us problems as the full backs need to get forward quicker.

Rothwell looked OK for 10 minutes then disappeared and am not sure of Palmer as he looked like a player who will beat a player once then try and beat them again. He needs to concentrate on the basics first.

I can understand that as they won't have seen much of them - but having seen how decent Edwards, Nsiala, Nolan etc were last year, there are clearly several players who could easily step up a level.

Edwards and Harrison looked impressive against us I agree but Nolan had a poor game at Ewood and if Nsiala played that day then it appears he'll get mugged every game in the Championship.

I agree that some players could step up but rebuilding a championship team with only league one players could  result in problems at Ipswich .

Garner for a million pound 10 goals last year in the Championship in 32 games. That's more than our current alternatives to Graham,(Samuel and Nuttall) managed combined in league 1 last season. As for Windass he has an eye for goal and something that we desperately lack which is pace.

Hurst had a clear plan sign players that he had seen last year that could be bought for a reasonable fee and could be improved. Whereas all Mowbray appeared to have was a few lists.

Garner may of been worth a gamble but not Windass.

Hurst has already been criticised by his new fans They feel signing only league one players will put you in league one.

I still suspect Venky's still feel you can run a club on short term signings, low wages and loan signings as they did on day one. I expected for few permanent sigings but feel we will be busy in the loan market in the next few weeks.

I said a few weeks ago that Mowbray got his sums wrong at the start of the summer and had to go cap in hand for more money. By the time Venky's gave the go ahead it was too late.

Corry Evans. I think it shows you exactly what sort of character/player he is when his only good games for the club were against the likes of Walsall & Peterbrough in the third division whilst we're charging for promotion.

Awful player, and no wonder you never see him linked away. Salford City wouldn't even take him on.

Personally feel it shows that Evans plays well when we have more than one central midfielders playing. Remember he has played with Jason Lowe alongside him for the majority of the time here. Also Bowyer played him wrong as a holding midfielder when comparing his performances for Hull and his international caps

Not the best player but he is one of our better midfielders. Maybe it is a sad statement about the quality of our central midfielders we have/had.

I don't think We're after Armstrong anyway but I find it hard to think of a scenario whereby his price would go down substantially.

Hold steady if he doesn't particularly  rip up any trees maybe.

Really?....personally think he is 2 million overpriced and as Tyrone said he blew hot and cold in a lower league last season. A run of games where he doesn't play and starts sulking and wants away then his price will plummet.

If Adam Armstrong scores 10-15 goals next seasons in championship , the guys transfer value will rocket so the £3m , although quite high for us now will be a sound investment ... If only Venkys knew that

and if he doesn't his price goes down....thats the gamble

Maybe his first target for the striker position which I think is Armstrong in my opinion. Newcastle are tough to deal with Ashley there who is good business man and very good when it comes to getting what fees he wants. So lets say Mowbray is negotiating to get the fee down with some of the money based on appearances and goals. its can be a long negotiations

from the list you posted yes some names but we don't know what the wages, loans fees, agents fees involved so we cant judge or maybe doesn't want them

Why would Mowbray be negotiating with Ashley? Surely this would be Waggott?

Stll think if Armstrong and Chapman come back, it will only be on loan.

Your statement about the market is correct. Going off the interviews from Waggott and Mowbray from the India trip, it seems that they've been granted their "responsible" budget they asked for.  A major issue for us is FFP compliance. Waggott was clear that big spending will send us back to FFP penalty.

If you want the club to run responsible you have to accept that spending wise (transfers/wages) will be mid/lower championship. We have a great manager, a decent core of young players with potential to improve and great team spirit. Somebody mentioned the Burnley/Huddersfield model which seems a good fit at the moment.

For me it seems we have to gamble on lower league players making the step (Bradley Dacks of this world), rather than buying established Championship players. Will probably some duds along the way, but at least we won't go bankrupt on another Leon Best deal.

When the likes of Bournmouth get insignificent fines several years after they had premiership riches means that many championship clubs are ignoring FFP rules in the pursuit of the premiership. If FFP is to work it needs enforcing properly not just banning a couple of clubs from the transfer market.

As we blew our parachute payments we can't comment on parachute payments spiralling championship prices out of control.
