MCMC1875 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Anyone with an interest in the Hammond Organ - type 'Jon Lord' into Youtube, there are some great thoughts from Jon Lord on the Hammond and recordings of Deep Purple's excellent Child In Time, which I was fortunate enough to hear Jon Lord perform at KGH Blackburn, whilst touring with The Ian Gillan Band. There were also some good clips on BBC 4's rock special last Sunday.

Friarsnig Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Jon Lord wasn't in the Ian Gillan Band, it was Colin Towns that you saw at the KGH. He did have a stint in Whitesnake though. Nevertheless, I agree that Lord is one of the finest players of the Hammond in rock music. I saw him with Deep Purple a couple of times, I love the sound he got from his instrument.
Simon Says Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 You can also add Ray Manzarek of The Doors and Dave Greenfield from The Stranglers as other masters of the Hammond Organ.
Friarsnig Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I suppose this should be in that 'let's freshen it up' music thread. Deep Purple with Jon Lord, 40 years ago.
ABBEY Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Don't remember gillan @ kgh but saw them at guildhall in Preston
Friarsnig Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Is that when they had the naked female backing singers Abbey? I was there too.
Paul Mellelieu Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Don't think the Doors used a hammond. Gillan played at KGH supported by Budgie.
ABBEY Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Budgie ...saw them at the new inns or whatever it was then...Its now the spice lounge...must of been to gillan at kgh just don't recall lol
Paul Mellelieu Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Maybe Budgie wee supporting Ozzy Osbourne.... Gillan played one very cold snow-bound winter's night. Some lads from St Wilfred's printed forged tickets and were selling them half price. Saw Atomic Rooster at the the New Inns, with about 50 others.

Memory's letting me down Friarsnig. Twas indeed with David Coverdale's Whitesnake at Preston Guildhall when I was privileged to see Jon Lord. I also saw The Ian Gillan band at KGH Blackburn.
LDRover Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Clint Boon of the Inspiral Carpets plays a mean Hammond.
Paul Mellelieu Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 King of the hammond is Keith Emerson. By a big margin.
SouthAussieRover Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 John Paul Jones was preety good at playing it.
Paul Mellelieu Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 John Paul Jones was preety good at playing it. His bass playing was better.
