Just about everyone who knows about football (oh and me too! ) realised the Aussies had a good chance against Japan - truly appalling in every world cup outside Japan - and an overrated and past-it Croatia. Sorry I know you are desperate to grasp onto this 'underdog' tag and sticking one up to the arrogant, big-guns but tough. Well done for such a good show in your first world cup though! To be truthful, Australia have been underachieving on the world stage a wee bit. With moving into the Asia confederation it should see them at more world cups and with much more interest in the country. Asian Cup next up is it?

Australia making it out of the group stage was no real surprise, Croatia and Japan were there for the taking. The surprise was looking like being on the verge of knocking out the eventual World Cup winners in extra time...until they cheated their way through. So fair dinkum to the footballroos...'bout time you changed that socceroos thing! Mind you...we were rubbish and still got further than you! So there! The worst world cup of the lot I have seen has to be USA 94...albeit slightly biased due to England's absence and interviews with some friendly locals with puffed-out chests a couple of weeks before the tournament happily telling the camera "Do y' know...I reckon youse boys have gotta chance! Why not? England have as much of a chance as anybody! Yes Sir!". The main gripe however is that it was more about selling the sport to the USA than the football itself on FIFA's part. Still remember Diana Ross kicking off the tournament with the worst shot in history. Still gives me nightmares now!

I've been sick of the damn thing ever since the second England got knocked out and I had to jealously watch all those rubbishy countries gain glory. All because they are better at football than us...I ask you...how is that fair?
-
Sorry Philip but I think the main point is why take somebody if you are not prepared to play him? It doesn't really matter that he took Walcott if he was prepared to give him a chance. However to take him and not to be prepared to play him at all is just bonkers.

[Archived] Roberts Signs
FourLaneBlue replied to The1mattjansen's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
He came on a free when the transfer window was shut so Hughes couldn't really sign anyone, besides he had a couple of decent games and scored against, IIRC, Villa. Not really a donkey, just a short-term thing. -
Only just read the preview - very interesting philip and the most original one for quite some time.

[Archived] Roberts Signs
FourLaneBlue replied to The1mattjansen's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
It seems that the transer fee remains undisclosed, although Roberts sale good business insists Jewell, reckon it is likely to have been 3 million. It is surely more likely to be around that region than the 1million that hughesy mentions above is being reported. Jewell quote - "'However, I felt the time was right for a move for both parties and Blackburn's offer represents a good deal for Wigan in my mind." A rather paltry 1million for a 28 year-old Prem striker who has scored 43 goals in 103 appearances for the club wouldn't represent a "good deal" IMO. -
Is that the same David James who saved bugger all penalties against the Portugese in the 2004 quarter final penalty shoot-out defeat? Yep...it certainly could have "completely thrown" the Portugese...into fits of laughter. Two games going to penalties against the Portugese...no penalties saved whatsoever by the England keepers.

The Worst England World Cup Performance Ever.
FourLaneBlue replied to Mr Maureen's topic in World Cup 2006
Think only Jim remembers that one doc... -
True enough...and, for me, Lampard has proved he isn't in the same class as Gerrard and should therefore be dropped. Lampard has effectively played in Gerrard's position while Stevie has had to adujust his game accordingly. We shouldn't be doing that as Gerrard is the best player we have (certainly when ignoring the defending and looking at attacking and inspiring the team) yet has had to play second fiddle to a woefully out-of-form Lamps. Glad Sven has gone as, although his reign was nowhere near as bad as suggested (comparing him unfavourably to Graham Taylor is just silly), he had run out of steam and ended up being the main problem of the side. They can get it Neekoy and many have done way before you mentioned it. Maybe it's because I'm abroad but even speaking to friends back home I have encountered less hurt at going out of a tournamant than ever before. People just didn't think we could do it with Sven or the way the team was. In the run-up to the tournament the excitement took over as it always does yet when we played we struggled so much we hoped for England to raise their game rather than expected it. Regardless...being so close to the last four despite being crap shows that next time, despite having Stevie Mac as manager, we will all hope for a bit. Just like every other damn team in the competition, even the likes of Trinidad & Tobago, Greece or Slovenia*. * Of course, one of those teams somehow managed to win the whole thing! Which means of course that if England had won the penalty shoot-out then according to you they deserved to be there.

Oh cheer up Rev. Go on, just for once.
-
Fair enough by me...we get a player on a free with plenty to prove. It may not work out but then again...there's a possibility it might. So for now... In Hughes We Trust!
-
Maybe it's because (at least on paper) England are underachievers and Rovers are often overachievers? Or maybe it's just that most Blackburn fans are only happy when they have something to moan about and so are quite happy just missing out on the prize? Certainly I know I like a good whinge from time to time!
-
Spain...and we needed penalties to do that! There is always a chance though, however small or unrealistic, which isn't shared when looking at Rovers winning the league.
-
Regardless of the hype...there is still always a chance that England can actually win the whole thing. Look at this tournament...we've been pretty damn poor yet were only a penalty shootout away from the semis! Alas...Rovers don't have a chance to win the league.
-
Am I in the minority to think this is all a bit over the top? We lost again on penalties. In time we'll all get over it. This is reminiscent of the other scapegoats we have had, back to burning an effigy of Beckham at Upton Park. Being a good sport isn't just about behaving well during the game but also about facing defeat with grace and dignity. If, after thinking about that, you still want to rip off his gonads then go ahead.

The Worst England World Cup Performance Ever.
FourLaneBlue replied to Mr Maureen's topic in World Cup 2006
At least we got there unlike in 94. Worst ever world cup performance...losing 2-0 to Norway in the qualifiers while having Lee Sharpe at left back! We were really shocking back then! -
Sorry Neekoy - I overreacted at what I thought was your...er...overreaction

Drivel. If you really are stupid enough to believe a couple of posters on here winding you up constitutes a whole nation of people that view you as "anti-establishment no gooders" then I guess there's no use hoping for a more reasoned or perceptive reply from you. All the English are loosely to be bracketed as "these people" are they? You seem to be confusing banter (and a few may take it a little too far but haven't some always) for some deep-rooted dislike. Have you even been to England? If you did you'd meet plenty of "these people" who are perfectly normal and without a view of Aussies as "anti-establishment no gooders deserving a good thrashing" but are very like most Aussies.

I'd take Rooney as Torres is shockingly inconsistent and a lot of Spaniards don't rate him that much. Another example of a writer on La Liga who doesn't think much of 'the kid' is the excellent Phil Ball, who regularly and eloquently writes for espnsoccernet.com and When Saturday Comes about the Spanish game. Ball also wrote a readable history of the game there, Morbo, which I'd recommend if I could be bothered resurrecting the Holiday Reads thread. So in my opinion... Torres - even more overrated than Wayne "Greatest thing since slice breadTM" Rooney. Now, if we were talking about Villa that would be a more interesting debate. Much more clinical than Torres, especially so at domestic level.

The 'dark Horses' For This Tournament
FourLaneBlue replied to FourLaneBlue's topic in World Cup 2006
Hmmm...my tip of Tunisia as dark horses didn't really work did it?!? -
I'm quite pleased with how my fantasy team has got on as I can now say, and this is now backed up, that I am offically rubbish at predicting. I've suspected it for quite a while but until now have never quite had the proof.
-
That's a good comeback James. Touche!

Regardless, Argentina know they'd face a good chance of going out if they faced England. The opposite applies as well of course. England would hardly be shaking in their boots either. In fact, it could be a classic world cup match.
