[Archived] Tugay - Who Next?
rog of the rovers replied to RovertheHill's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Watched Tugay play for the reserves tonight against Manchester United. The team played very well against last year's reserve team Champions who included Alan Smith in their team. Rovers lost 1-0 but were much the better side. Man Utd's goal came in the 14th minute via a dubious penalty decision (no change there then eh?). Frank Fielding saved the penalty but the Manchester United striker bundled in the rebound. Tony Kane and Keith Treacy both came close in the first half for Rovers and Andy Taylor had a rasping drive a minute into the second half. Francis Jeffers had a header well saved by Tomasz Kuszcak before being sent off for absolutely nothing at all. Handbags at ten paces would be glorifying it. Frank Fielding then made a terrific save low to his left, but the contest was effectively over after Jeffers' red card. Tugay the main man, was his typical self, cocky, arrogant and brilliant. Yet still sloppy on occassions but this is probably due to lack of match fitness. Overall a good watch and a good performance by a young inexperienced Rovers side. -

Easy. March 12th 2000 Kenny Lunt's goal for Crewe against Rovers at the Blackburn End. The lowest point I've had supporting Rovers for the last 19 years!!! -
[Archived] Ben Thatcher
rog of the rovers replied to marvbfc's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
Disgusting challenge. Didn't Roy Keane get a 5 game ban for intentionally hurting a player? Thatcher should get at least the same. The FA with this yellow card is final rubbish are almost promoting the action by not taking any further action! -
Great Read as ever Bob

I'm not 100% sure but the away shirts I saw with names on at the game vs. NZ were all in white letters, so I assume its white. -

Going back to Pirates of the Caribbean. I thought it was a really good film. A sort of Empire Strikes Back kinda film in the sense that it doesn't really end but still worth watching. Especially if you're gonna go see POTC 3. I thought the problem with the 1st film was a weak story, but Johnny Depp stole the show. In the 2nd film, the story is a lot better, but Johnny Depp goes missing at times, and is no longer a loveable rogue figure, in fact you start to dislike him. Overall though 8 1/2 out of 10

Mexico vs. Angola, something to watch down the pub on Friday night. Mexico Last time out: Beat Iran 3-1, although the result doesn't tell the whole story. The Fourth best team in the world according to FIFA, struggled for 80 mins against the Iranians before two pieces of sloppy defending from Iran allowed the Mexicans to in the match. Positives in World Cup: Omar Bravo (above) scorer of two goals, also an impressive display from Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez Negatives in World Cup: Jared Borghetti, the Bolton striker will miss the rest of the group stage. Star Man: Look out for Brazilian born Zinha, also known as Naelson. Better Behave: Carlos Salcido and Gerardo Torrado, both booked in the opening match in Group D Odds: Pre Tournament 50/1. Now 40/1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angola Last time out: Conceded an early goal to the Portugese, but valliantly held on for the remaining 88 minutes and were unfortunate to not get an equaliser through Akwa Positives in World Cup: Akwa, currently unattached, watch out for his drammatic over head kicks. Negatives in World Cup: Defence is just too weak. One to Watch: Akwa, a chance to do a bit of scouting, is he good enough for Rovers? Better Behave: Jamba, Loco and Macanga, all booked in the first game Odds: Pre Tournament 750/1 Now 1500/1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Prediction: 3-0 to Mexico

[Archived] Souey Sets Sights On Palace
rog of the rovers replied to FourLaneBlue's topic in Football Messageboard Archive
I dont have anything against Souness, I think a lot of people forget what good he actually did for the club, taking an absolutely shocking group of players left by Brian Kidd and moulding them into a team that got promotion automatically, the 2000/2001 season was one of the best seasons in recent years. Souness' problem came when we sold Duff, his master plan was broken up and his big money gamble (aka Barry Ferguson) back fired big time. As the money dried up so did Souey's hunger to do well at Rovers. If he goes to Crystal Palace it would not suprise me to see them gain automatic promotion to the Premiership as in Simon Jordan they have a chairman who can back his manager financially. Therefore I think Souey will succeed, however you cant help but feel that if Palace were broke Souey wouldn't be interested in the slightest. Good luck to Souey and remember the good parts of Souey's reign 2000-2003 (10th, 6th and the Worthington Cup, that aint too bad in my book!) -
Pauleta a good shout, as said in my preview, recently beat Eusebio's Portugese goalscoring record. And as pleasure said vs. Angola and Iran, at 25/1 could be a good bet. In World Cup 2002 he scored a Hat-trick vs. Poland in Portugal's only win. In Euro 2004 he failed to score however so maybe a point to prove?

Yeah Claire. Played a t Sheffield Wednesday on loan this season. I was thinking that there must be a better English Goalkeeper but the only other "good" one I could think of were: Nigel Martyn, Everton, but hes injured! Richard Wright, Everton, Dodgy at times. Mike Pollitt, Wigan, Too Old? Ben Foster, Watford, Untried. English keepers a bit thin on the ground at the moment!
