In fairness, and whilst I don't think players should be ruled out when they hit 30, the problem is you don't know when someone is going to be finished once they're in their 30s. There is a fairly rapid loss of pace that everyone gets at some point in their 30s. Sometimes it seems to happen at as low as 31, sometimes it's mid or even late 30s. In a similar way, at some point players will also lose their recovery abilities in this age bracket. So they might start only being good for about half or so of the games in a season. And injury proneness is another factor that worsens. It can be none of these really kick in for years, and some players do manage to work their game around a loss of pace, but it's fairly rare it doesn't become some sort of liability. Some players can also still be very useful squad players even if they're only fit half the time, but that doesn't warrant paying them top earner wages, which is likely what we're talking here. It's fear of the unknown, the unknown being when this player will start to break down. And that's precisely why players usually start getting shorter contract offers in their 30s. Again, it can absolutely work out for years, or it can fail (like yes, any signing), but the degree of risk undoubtedly increases in the 30s. To be clear, I do want to keep Tronstad and would happily offer him a 3 year deal on decent wages.

Difference is we don't have Prem club resources. It also doesn't make it right either way, the system is broken. Someone said we paid a 6 figure fee for Eze if I recall, so I'm not sure we did abuse the system. I can't imagine it entitles a League Two club to that level of compo for a 15 or 16 yr old whatever he was. Sounds more like a fee we agreed. Regardless, we wouldn't have been paying much more than that for him realistically, whereas a Prem club can fart out a fair fee for these players. But they don't have to, so they don't.

Oh that's surprising tbf. When he wasn't announced with the intake I thought that was done. Probably hasn't been able to secure the deal elsewhere he thought he could. Certainly a positive but given how he clearly wasn't all that keen to sign up, seems very likely he will be off at some point if he impresses the bigger fish enough. Perhaps more of an Ash Phillips than a Finneran.

We've had a bit of a rough time with promising youngsters being ruined by injuries. Whitehall, Gilsenan, I'd say JRC despite him being in the first team squad (had bad injuries at youth level and senior level, I think we've never seen the player he would have been without them), Butterworth had some bad ones whilst developing I recall. Can anyone think of any more?

The accounts (if they weren't doctored, which would be a bit surprising given how long has passed and how many fans on here have scrutinised them, but not entirely surprising given how dodgy these cunts are) demonstrate that for a long time we didn't have a lot of leeway on the spend most seasons, within the rules. If those accounts are true, then you were wrong (aside from ways we could have been creative whilst that was allowed, of course) at the time. Now, we have definitely pulled the purse strings shut relative to what has been coming in and what they could do with funding. We had a season where we showed a profit, and there has been minimal spend, so they're definitely holding the money back now. That's not the same as you being proven right on your previous posts about what was happening then, just saying.

I think a more honest couple of interviews would have had quotes like 'Blackburn was a shitshow behind the scenes, Eustace was the only competent person in the management team and he has moved here and wanted us...plus Blackburn offered shitter wages so we were off.' Chaddy won't be able to claim we only lost Batth because he's been offered a longer deal now, both players signed one year deals at Derby.

The losses have never been more than 20 mill in a season before, so that only makes sense if the owners haven't sent us any money at all in the past 2 seasons, which is demonstrably false. In fact there was also at least one recent season where we made a profit in the accounts. In which case, what losses?
