But he has to get the best 11 and some consistency.

That's were people get concerned but he deserves credit for putting it together.

Time will come he has to get a tune out of it and cut with the rambling and romancing.

Agree, but unable to pick his best 11 with injuries and Coved. Injuries go with the job but this Coved with numerous players isolating every week must be soul destroying.

  2. Don’t think Mowbray gets enough credit with the squad he has assembled, a massive IF,but just imagine if everyone was fit.

                                           Kaminsky

                        Nyambe.  Ayala.  Lenihan.  Douglas

                           Holtby.   Travis.      Dack

                     Brereton. Armstrong.  Elliott

    Subs.

    Pears

    Williams

    JRC

    Johnson

    Trybull

    Rothwell

    Gallagher.

    Squad members,Wharton,Bell,Bennett,Evans,Davenport,Buckley,Downing,
    Chapman,Dolan.

Regardless of liking or disliking TM, that is a very strong squad.

I'm not saying I don't agree that we will be better when the injured players come back. I am saying I don't agree with the narrative that we didn't have any shots because all of our players are out. Tony got it wrong last night, that's the long and short of it.

I am under no illusions that when our full-strength team is out, we will be a far sight better. However, we have a SQUAD now that has good depth. Tony even mentions it all the time that our SQUAD is good enough to be up there. So which is it? we still need to be able to perform with the team we put out last night. Yeah, not as good as what it could be but still good enough in my opinion. Sick of the excuses.

Yeah he mentions our squad is good enough but not with 10 out, he wasn’t making excuses but it’s pretty obvious with a depleted squad as ours we aren’t going to be firing on all cylinders.

It was the tv presenters who highlighted all the missing personnel and said we will be in contention when everyone back.

Saying that, Gallagher was very poor, let’s hope Armstrong is back soon.

JRC is a decent footballer but L/b he isn’t but when you’ve got both your left backs out it’s difficult. Let’s see who’s available after the international break and go from there.

I struggle to find sympathy with Mowbray and his injury excuses for the lack of shots in the second half last night. If you look at our team last night in the 2nd half it's not too far away from what we would have usually ended a game with last season. It's arguable that Armstrong and Travis are big misses but the rest is what we would have had to deal with last season when we were managing to be competitive. ie. 3-1 win against Bristol after Covid break.

    Last night:

Pears (arguably just as bad as Walton)

Nyambe (better than Bennett) Lenihan Williams JRC (better than Bell)

    Evans Holtby Rothwell

Elliot (better than what we had last season) Gallagher Brereton

    Last season:

    Walton

    Bennett Lenihan Tosin JRC

    Travis Evans Downing

    Gallagher Holtby Brereton

Basically, what I am saying is the injuries do not wash with me. On paper we still have a squad with the injuries that is better than what we had to deal with last year. I'd have last nights second-half team to beat the Bristol team.

Take 10 first teamers out of Reading Watford etc and see how they manage, not just squad members but probably 6/7 who would be in the team.

TV pundits all agree when we get players back we will be up there. Pundits like Paul Cook as well who usually doesn’t like us, Lee Johnson another one, it’s not excuses it’s fact!!!

Rubbish Mr. E, sorry but absolute crap. (Apologies again) The Dog and Bloody Duck could have set up better defensively than us, we should have got a goalless draw at least. Yes we have absentees and it's unfortunate but Swansea were nothing today and were there for the taking. Absentees are a lame excuse for me, yeh it doesn't help admittedly but Mowbray, Evans and Lenihan are directly to blame today on many counts.

No it’s not rubbish, if a team has 9 players out, normally it’s a few squad members, but you’ve got to admit probably 7 of those would actually start, ( Bennett not in squad and Bell on bench).

Kaminsky, Ayala,Johnson,Rothwell,Travis,Dack Douglas would very likely start.

Not sure there are many teams in the division could get by with all those out.

I interpreted that not as that we should specifically aim to play crap football, just that its impossible to enjoy the football very much when the results arent good enough.

. I would much prefer consistency in positive results and crap performances than decent performances lurching from one extreme to the other.

Yep defo says prefer consistency and crap performances.

I want him to make us promotion material. I couldn't care less if we are attractive to watch or as dull as dishwater. This is the Championship and we are of limited resources in it. We aren't in a position to be worried about style or entertaining people. Results are the priority.

I fully agree Nyambe should be full back. Unfortunately it seems there are issues there with Mowbray and I fully expect him to be off for nothing at the end of the season to a club where he will thrive.

I disagree that it is exciting to watch. I enjoyed the victories over Derby and Coventry as much as anyone but I get absolutely no pleasure from seeing us hammer a team one week and then follow that up with a hammering ourselves, especially when we are opened up with such ease. I would much prefer consistency in positive results and crap performances than decent performances lurching from one extreme to the other.

All successful sides are built from the back. We aren't.

The manager has already set the bar at mid table for the season with his public comments of 'challenging' for the top 6 e.g. being mid-table and in with a shout, which 6-7 other clubs will do. We 'can' be in the top six as I believe our squad is good enough to get there. I just don't think we've got the right manager, coaching or mentality to do it. You need to absolutely hate losing and develop an approach of giving nothing away. Looking at the manager and players I just don't think we have the nasty, ruthless, consistent streak to get there.

Well all to our own, I like the way he plays this season, players still getting used to it, obviously we have to tighten up, TM hasn’t set any bar for mid table mediocrity, he’s said time again he expects us to be up there and believes in the squad.

We have some very talented players and I don’t want to watch crap performances every week hoping for a 1  0 win, let’s see how it pans out this season playing a different and exciting way.

I know it’s not against the top teams but we have kept 4 clean sheets out of 8 and can score a few as well.

Been very unfortunate with injuries and coved and had to use 26 players already, let’s hope for a settled side soon and try to get the consistent streak we need, but keep playing with a high tempo.

Mowbray's methods will not be successful in terms of promotion. On occasion we will blow teams away when playing well and with a fair wind in our favour, but on at least as many occasions we will be caught out and punished for it.

As above, the proven mastermind in the Championship is doing it again at Middlesbrough. 7 unbeaten now and clear of us. Anyone expect us to go 7 unbeaten anytime soon?

How has he done that? Through making them hard to break down and hard to score against and go from there. Hanging on in there until the 70th and 80th minute at 0-0 then nicking games. It doesn't require 60-70% possession, it doesn't require 20+ attempts on goal, it doesn't require the Watford and Reading managers heaping praise on us, it doesn't even require a 20+ a season goalscorer.

It is the tried and tested method and it works time after time, because even when struggling you have the basics right and don't lose games easily or cheaply, which is what we have done at Bournemouth, Forest and last night. Even when struggling you can nick games late on or grind out bore draws which keep the points ticking over and develop good habits of not losing games.

None of that here and never will be under this manager. He can't do it but doesn't even really want to because he thinks that sort of approach is beneath him.

For someone who spent his playing days as a CB at Middlesbrough and Ipswich and has spent all but one season of his entire managerial career in the lower divisions or Scotland that is strange. It is also noticeable how everywhere he goes he always has a good relationship with fans because most people see what he is trying, and failing, to achieve.

Many people will accept and be happy with win one, lose one, draw one if we are scoring goals, creating chances and walloping a few along the way. But it is inconsistent and will not result in promotion.

The club need to decide if they are happy with that. In a normal world with supposedly owners eager to get promoted you'd expect not but I get the impression that everyone is more than happy with how things are whilst losing tens of millions of pounds for it.

Think he’s trying to make the team attractive to watch, and hopefully to win matches as well, Nyambe needs to come back in at R/b and much as I like JRC he’s not good enough at full back, right midfielder come winger is his position.
Douglas seemed a decent loan but needs to be better defensively,

It’s certainly exciting to watch and hopefully he can tighten up at the back, and still think we could have a good season.

You seem to be quick off the mark to criticise when we get beat but nothing when we give someone a hammering.

Hopefully he knows now his best players playing in the right positions, still think we can be in the top six come May, and yes tighten up but keep playing exciting stuff.

Yes in the brief period where Coventry had 11 men he was caught out a couple of time.

I think Tony may bring Nyambe in for the game vs Reading to shore up then defence. But then where does JRC go as we need his legs and passing quality? Probs midfield. Then that means Johnson is dropped....

    Tricky decisions all round.

Is Rothwell available for Reading? That further complicated matters.

Probably best shout is to just stick with a winning team. But I do think JRC at FB and Johnson in midfield could struggle when we are on the back foot.

Sure read it somewhere Rothwell isolated till Friday, not 100% sure.

  10. Excellent result, pleased for Mowbray, love the style we are playing.

Wont happen every week, struggle to break down teams who park the bus, like some top premier teams do,  glad Brereton has come good, Holtby on fire and a very astute loan with Elliot.

With Dack, Travis and Rothwell to come into the squad it could be our best chance to get in the top 6.

Here we go already, "let's give him until Christmas" etc.

Hopefully we won't have played ourselves completely out of contention barring a miraculous run by then.

Seemingly we have the players to mount a realistic challenge this season, we just need the manager.

No, I didn’t say “give him till Christmas” I said see where we are at Christmas, but you and others want him out every time we have bad result.

I personally think he’s a decent manager, bought well in this window in a difficult time, unlucky we have a few injuries and unavailability of players, the time to judge is 15 or so games, and give the new signings to bed in.

Think 90% on here were happy with his transfer dealings, and a reasonable start, just wait till we get the main players back and see where we are....

I was baffled when the commentator said that we had been much improved in the second half. I must have watched a different game because in terms of chances I felt our best chances (not many) came in the first half and in the second whilst we had loads of meaningless possession we did nothing to test their goalkeeper.

Mowbray simply doesn't have it in his locker to break teams down when they are well organised.

Very frustrating and whilst I appreciate that we've got a lot of players missing the game still happens and the points still slip by. If you want promotion or to 'challenge for the top six' you need better than we've seen the last two games.

I think there is something seriously wrong medically looking at who we have missing. Usually an international fortnight would be useful in getting people back to fitness and yet bizarrely the opposite seems to have happened with us and we end up with more missing than before despite only a couple having international duty.

5 games into the season and we've already had these players missing:

Williams, Lenihan, Nyambe, Bennett, Evans, Travis, Rankin Costello, Rothwell, Holtby, Dack, Gallagher plus not calling upon Elliott, Trysull or Douglas when eligible.

    That is outrageous.

Think only Bennett injured in international weeks, who wouldn’t have started anyway, couple with Coved, Holtby on paternity leave, Travis long term, Dack back shortly along with JRC, rest back playing, not sure it’s fair blaming medical folk, and a bit last minute to put 3 new signings in, need to get used to system etc.

This time time last season think Charlton were second in league after 5 games, let’s see where we are 10/15 games in.

By my count we had 11 unavailable today.

    Pears

    Elliott

    Williams

    Rothwell

    Bennett

    JRC

    Travis

    Dack

    Butterworth

    Vale

    Holtby

Douglas and Trybull were technically available but too recently signed to be considered so make that 13 out.

Excellent point, you would probably say 6 or 7 of those if fit would be in the match day squad and at least 5 in the starting line up,

Early doors, let’s see where we are at Christmas.

If he were in that sort of bracket he wouldn't be on loan to us.

There's going to be an awful lot of unhappy players in Mowbray's squad. As someone has pointed out, Mowbray can only pick 11.

On the other hand, the bran tub of Tony's Tombola has just got even deeper.

Stand by for more chopping and changing and different tactics every week to try and keep the camp happy.

TM has already said he has a decent squad but  light on numbers, he’s rectified that, there will be injuries, squad numbers about right, with probably a couple going out on loan, as well as Charlie going to Fleetwood.

Very decent window, with a mixture of permanent, loans, experienced and young ‘uns..

Only slight disappointment is that Josh King didn’t go anywhere..

Is a 17-year-old going to be picked over Holtby, Johnson, Rothwell, Travis (when fit), the Norwich lad, and all the other experienced midfield players on the books?

I don't think so....unless Liverpool have a clause in the deal guaranteeing him game time.

No one can guarantee game time, but some clubs want a fee if  the player doesn’t play  a set number of games, very good loan signing.

  16. 2 minutes ago, Butty said:

Looking like the best transfer window we’ve had in a while. I won’t lie I’m actually quite optimistic about the season ahead! That being said though my only worry is if Arma was to get injured we don’t have anyone to replace his goals or even a fraction of them up top, Brereton and Gallagher are poor backup options striker wise but hey ho, top six here we come lads ?

Don't forget Dack, he does score goals, not the pace of Armstrong but quality...
