  1. Apparently Crawford came dribbling out of his area but hadn't seen a Bolton player who was fairly close by. Crawford ended up kicking the ball against him, it hit him and went into the net. I presume this was th replay, played in front of 65,295. The home game was the Rovers' highest attendance-62,522. Imagine that.
  2. JC Crawford played 1924-1932; outstanding in the semi against Arsenal in 1928 and played in the final of the same year. Was held responsible for the defeat against Bolton the following year.
  3. JWH Arthur-1883-1890 and 1891-1893 played 40 league games and 35 FA cup games. This probably included the 3 consequtive cup finals. He also played 7 times for England.
  4. Graham Mosseley, who we sold to Derby, goaled for Brighton in the FA cup.
  5. A bit of information about Alfred Robinson,1911-1921, during which time he made 144 appearances. He was fearless, often throwing himself at the feet of opponents in a way other more sensible keepers would not have done.Although he got injured, he always played the same way.2 championships were won at this time. Harry Leyland was not an overnight success and was not the shape of most athletes.Excellent at one-on-ones.Very popular -even away crowds liked him. Fred Else was a "B" international when we signed him in Aug 1961. Had 4 great seasons followed by 1 that was a total disaster, during which he declined. He was very reliable and rarely injured.
  6. I don't agree with the suggestions some people have made. Filan was never a great keeper for us-sometimes lucky-but never great.Given was too small.Bradshaw was very good and I am disappointed he didn't develop better.Blacklaw's eyes had gone by the time he came-let a lot of long shots in.Abbey even said Butcher had some good qualities-imo not only was he as bad as Collier,he also meant we couldn't sign a young Southall as Kendall would then have had 3 keepers.
  7. Well, Abbey,I guess you won't read this but for all the possession in the 2nd half we made very few chances.
  8. 2 pieces of skill from Kanu when he was up front-"did" Emerton and set up one of his forwards and in the 2nd half got past matteo who seemed reasonably lucky not to be sent off.
  9. What I am suggesting is that we have had few outstanding keepers.Gennoe was a good 2nd Division keeper. Arnold played well.Jones was very good but didn't prove himself at the highest level.Flowers was the best we could get at the time , was very good but was not outstanding. Oh, and if I were 12 I would not have seen Jones play.
  10. i thought it was very interesting to read the Southampton supporter.
  11. It might be an age thing.....but I'm more concerned about what we do-right or wrong- to win a game. We can control that more than the referee's decisions. In other words, let's presume the ref will make mistakes, but let's make sure we make enough chances to win the game. We didn't on Saturday.
  12. At the time Roger Jones came to us we wondered how we had got such a good keeper. He was excellent-except when he got the colliwobles over Easter during the promotion season. But he didn't make it at the highest level.Friedel not only has played at the highest level for us, he has contributed to winning a cup and keeping us in this Division. I accept his current form is not as good but I still think he's the best keeper I've seen for us.
  13. I don't know if there is a correlation between whinging and attending matches. I'm not happy because there were only 2 positives I took from the match-Short and Yorke.Souness does not seem to have learned from last season. The match was not one that could enthuse supporters to go and tell their friends about and tell them to come to the next one. It's also created quite a lot of negative reports nationally and locally-it's not just contributors to here that whinge.
  14. I think it could be Brad because it's one area we haven't really had many outstanding players.
  15. We beat Wolves 5-1. Home results and performances are important, not just because poor ones create tensions on here, but also because we have to improve the gates. We're not going to do it after saturday(OK,I'm sure the next gate will be up) and the management team have to take on board the connection between the product and cash generated through the gates. By the way, on the way out on Saturday, we were walking behind a woman and her son, who had on an England away shirt. Nothing unusual in that. However, they were talking Dutch or a Scandinavian language!!
  16. I think it's either got to be someone who played at the top level for us, or went on to play there for someone else. Harry and Fred could be counted in the first category but there have been better. I think Flowers was excellent in his prime but I also think Friedel in his prime-before last season was even better. If Bradshaw had gone on to play for England we could have considered him and even the guy who went to Derby, under Clough, before he'd played for the first team(Mosseley?). I think Roger Jones was superb but he wasn't tested at the top level for us.
  17. The draw brought about a little symetery-the last 12 matches against WBA(I presume at Ewood) reads as 4 Home wins, 4 Away wins,4 Draws. I thought Kanu was excellent- setting up one of their players with a tremendous piece of skill in the first half, really showing up Emerton at times in the first half and then really rattling Matteo. But what about Darren Purse? It's the first time I've not seen him play really dirty at Ewood and I have to believe this is down to the lack of pressure he was put under. A real reflexion on un.
  18. Last season really did result in many non-sceptics start to question Souness's tactics/transfer policy/ability to improve players etc.I'm not a fan of Souness but I hope he will be able to bring about the necessary changes in himself to answer these questions.
  19. I thought it was a very good post Revidge Blue and I agree with everything you said except about Ferguson. I can't see he's a £7,500,000 player. He just seems to pass it around like Wilkins and he certainly doesn't seem to be a box-to-box player. I really can't see the quality. If he turned his back on the ball when the free kick was taken well... A bloke on the row behind and a few seats away is Scottish and goes up to Glasgow regularly. He gets a ribbing that we paid so much for Ferguson and is often asked when are we going to sell him back for £1,000,000>
  20. I thought WBA had bought some new strikers-they certainly have brought in some new players. Will we play any better against them than last time?
  21. If Souness hadn't signed him we would have been relegated and probably would not have Won the worthington Cup and got us into Europe. And why did Souness have to sign him and put the Club into the red-because he had wasted nearly £7,000,000 on a striker who contributed nothing to the club.Cole also contributed a great deal to our staying up last season as well as to the development of young Stead-it will be interesting to see how well he does this season without Cole's contribition. For those contributors who see Souness as a strong manager and admire him greatly, you're welcome to your opinion. What I see is a man who buys poorly,is inconsistent with team selection, poor on tactics and who won't praise a player he has fallen out with even though that player has worked his socks off and deserves to be man of the match.Plus ca change.
  22. Andrew Cole was an excellent player for us for most of the time he was with us. If we are indeed paying some of his salary it shows the desperate straits we were in when we went to sign him. Unfortunately he found it impossible to work for his boss-a lot of employees of the club seemed to have found the same problem- and he's moved on. I shall be applauding him on his return.
  23. Patrick Barclay in the Sunday Telegraph argued today that Norwich and West Brom might stay up. Who are under threat if this happens? We are, along with Everton and maybe Portsmouth. If so, it might be a must win game!!
  24. The sports editor didn't say which bookies he was quoting.
