Richie Smallwood is a model professional. He did give his all (and still does, i'm sure) and the contract that he has is hardly his fault. Rovers supporters love to hate on their own players and Smallwood seems to be, unfairly, disliked now. There's a nasty, negative attitude supporting the team but, i guess, that's modern times for you. The King is, still, very much alive!

My first choice would be DG (not for his tally but the cathartic (double meaning of this word made me laugh when I was checking the spelling) effect he has on the game (either starting or when used as a sub). Downing is a good choice.

Why doesn't the club encourage the fans to go to an unused part of the stadium... something like the DARWEN END; and not vilify people who pay to come support the team. And not feel the need to employ extra security so the cost of opening that section is economically unsound. I'm not saying the DE experiment was a total success... it ebbed and flowed alongside the fortunes of the club. But at least there was a fanbase who wanted to sing /cheer the team on (and to vent their displeasure at a rotting regime) Cramming everyone into the BBE, which i'm sure looks good on an accountants balance sheet, has failed to increase the atmosphere.
