Just got home after celebrating the win this afternoon to hear the news about the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton.

Sad news indeed, one of Englands greatest, a truly remarkable player .RIP

Got the news at halftime and posted on here. Such a shame. First game with my dad feeling fit enough to go for some time, and to get the news that one of his heroes had died had him quite deflated the rest of the game.

He didn’t stand up for the goal, let alone celebrate it, just a quick clap. I asked him if he was alright, he just said ‘Doing what Bobby would’ve done. Clap and get on with it.’

For all of the stick AEW gets, and I have given them a fair bit in the past year too, it's great to have another big wrestling company around for moments like Adam Copeland's debut last night:

Kind of crazy that they were able to literally copy his WWE entrance and even the "Rated R Superstar" nickname, which WWE apparently abandoned the trademark for in 2020. A different name but otherwise literally everything else the same. A really cool get for AEW, and it's great that Edge gets a final full-time run. Judging by the post-event scrum it's something he really wanted, but WWE were only willing to let him do a part-time schedule. Considering Edge has been a WWE lifer up until this point it's really weird to see him in the ring for a different promotion, but I'm looking forward to what he can do there.

Adam himself said something like ‘If you’re a fan of wrestling, rather than acronyms, this should make you happy’.

Completely on board with that view purely because more wrestling companies = more wrestlers employed.

  3. The Solheim and Ryder Cups (and both accompanying Junior iterations) won by Europe, all in a two week span!

European golf is flying! And Viktor Hovland is rapidly becoming my favourite golfer, so aggressive and adventurous, yet entirely humble and funny off course.

Absolutely a massive opportunity that someone like Waggot will never address I expect. The season tickets and marketing in particular are a joke as we all discussed earlier this summer.

I don’t think we will ever make enough from fans to break even though, not sure of the maths but £20m shortfall would be loads of tickets and merchandise.

More fans = more eyes on the ground = bigger/better sponsorship.

    Hi Mike,

I’ll try and address all your points.

Firstly, yes, John Murray has stepped down as chair of the Trust and leaves with everyone’s thanks for his work over the last 5 years. This change hadn’t been publicly announced yet and the intention was to send an appropriate email to the membership advising them of this and the necessary restructuring that goes with it.

Neither I or anyone else currently on the board were aware of your desire to remain involved. We understood you were standing down due to very understandable constraints on your time due to a growing family. For clarity, being a co-opted board member is not much different to being an elected one. There’d still be an expectation to attend meetings and the same sanctions around not doing so would apply as outlined in our rules. We currently have no need for any co-opted members as our board is not at capacity. Co-option is a way to bring expertise to the board outside an election period rather than a watered down version of a board member.

You were removed from the WhatsApp group after the AGM along with others who were standing down. It’s not really an approved comms channel for discussing important matters, it’s a WhatsApp group. This seemed logical. I’m sorry if you feel it was bitchy.

All members who stood down were thanked for their efforts at the AGM by our then chair. Any conversations you had with him regarding heritage and remaining involved were not relayed to anyone else.

You’ve highlighted one of our biggest recent issues. Evidently our internal and external communications need improving. The situation @Mattybluedescribes is obviously unacceptable and we’re investing in our infrastructure to eliminate issue like his going forward. There’s a number of issues we need to get right to ensure we continue with the progress made in the last 12 months.

Hope that clears things up a bit?

Understandable, I think it’s a case of crossed wires and misunderstanding, so thank you for the reply 🙂

I do feel that JM was keen as mustard as recently as the Girona game, so it did appear very out of the blue to hear via mutuals that he’s no longer Chair.

Hope all is well and hopefully WATR carries on its progress.

I remain an interested and opinionated member!

    #WaggottOut

re: ticketing, for my views just refer to the original of our wonderful Marketing Prospectus 😅

  6. What is going on at We Are The Rovers? At the AGM I stepped back with the intention being to become a co-opted board member (Heritage) rather than elected, but was subsequently deleted from the WhatsApp group (ooo, bitchy) so I considered myself excommunicated.

I didn’t mind this too much as stepping down a touch was precisely because I couldn’t attend many meetings, due to my boys. I was still willing to contribute, but clearly nobody on the board felt I had a voice with any value.

Now I’m being told that the Chair has similarly felt ‘encouraged’ to step down? Doesn’t sit right with me after the solid (imo) progress made in the last 6 years after inheriting a board of two fantastic people wishing to step down themselves,  so almost an empty room.

I’ve given 5 years of volunteering, pioneered the Marketing Prospectus, and been fucked off to one side without any explanation or gratitude, and now the Chair has also stepped away. Don’t get me wrong, change can be needed and be a very good thing, but the nature of these changes hasn’t sat well with me tbh.

Can any board members please shed light? I have my own opinions on what (or who) has happened, but I’m open to changing my mind and appreciate I only really know my side of the story.

Nitro from 1996 - 1998 and WWE from 1998 - 2000 are my all-time favourite years. After that it gets a bit spotty.

WWE in 2001-2002 was alright, but losing steam.

TNA from 2005 - 2008 was pretty fun.

    Smackdown's August 2016 - March 2017 run was great.

I enjoyed AEW until around autumn 2022 when the CM Punk brawl out stuff started.

Nowadays I keep up with the news via reddit, mostly, but don't watch any of the shows.

I think Smackdown from 2001 thru 2005 was first rate, especially when Paul Heyman wrote it. Lesnar, Taker, Mysterio, Angle, Benoit, Eddie, Edge, and the emergence of Cena and Batista.

We Are The Rovers met with Steve Waggott yesterday. Obviously the issue of closing the Blackburn End for the Cardiff game was high on the agenda.

Firstly we conveyed our disappointment with the decision and the strength of feeling within the fanbase.

The response was that uptake for the game was expected to be extremely low. At present it looks like a crowd of around 2,000 with less than 1,500 tickets sold. Whether this is a cause or a symptom of the closure of the Blackburn End is another question, but it’s pretty horrifying.

It’s a financial decision based on numbers. We asked if it would’ve been possible to house the visiting supporters in an area of the Jack Walker stand and open the Blackburn End instead of the Darwen End. This would’ve meant that a police presence would be required which would have had an additional cost higher than opening an extra stand.

There was an acknowledgement that the communication needed to be better around the whole decision.

Personally feel it would’ve made more sense to open the ends and close the JW.
