  4. There are ten or so suitable candidates on this website, aren't there?
  5. Strachen, eh. You must know a lot about football then, son.
  6. Jan, Let's take you points one by one. Souness is bad for the club. Your evidence, please, given that he delivered the rovers back to the Prem. Drives good players away? Name them, and the reasons they were "driven away". (I, as a Blackburn Rovers supporter have never sneered at any player that has left the Rovers.) They either play for the Rovers or against them, they get the respect they deserve, and are the ones that left (not all, admittedly) better than the ones that replaced them? Now, GS take us down again? Just how many times has GS taken us "down"? He has taken us "UP" and has battled us out of a problem season (I am assuming that GS takes total responsibility ratherr than the players). Remember, that he turned the season around in the last few games of last season. Does that not count for anything? Given that, I am on record that GS should get , at least 10 or so games to pull the side up this season. OK Jan, I did make the assumption that you were a tyke, Sorry if that offended you. I note that you named the people you wouldn't want in the job, but who would you put there and why? edit: I realise that this post needs editing, but think that the majority would understand what I'm getting at....
  7. Jan, as someone I've met; as someone, as a person I like, I can't understand why you hate Souness so much? The only thing that I can come up with is the hatred of the Rangers versus the Celtic. Would you be happy with KD to come back again (him being "proddy" and all that) or would you want to get O'Neill as the saviour. Jan, Souness has done much for the Rovers, give him the benefit of the doubt for a few more matches, give him the credit for the things that he has done for the Rovers. For without him, we would still be in or below the "Championship"
  8. Den, by my own criteria, Newton would come second. I saw plenty of him, great player, solid as, but never made England captain. That shows the respect that Crompton had in his time.
  9. Tell me evukovic, how can we make our team stronger now that the transfer window has been closed? No amount of your cheering is going to improve the team. It will only get better from within, players that are already there, improving their skills, becoming more confident of their own abilities. Don't get me wrong, I think that we have some talented players. We have to use them in the right way. Is the team stronger than 12 months ago? Only time will tell.
  10. The number of appearances says it all, dosen't it? England captain, to boot. Got to be Crompton.
  11. Stronger or weaker? What does it matter, there's nothing that can be done now, is there?
  12. Benny Goodman, 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert featuring BG Count Basie Teddy Wilson Gene Krupa Lionel Hampton Cooti Williams Bobby Hackett "sing, sing, sing" 12 minutes of bliss and you can dance to it as well edit: just played "sing, sing sing" again........ fan-bloody-tastic
  13. The match report on the Beeb site makes the handball point very well indeed
  14. I'm sorry Tom, what did you say, I came over a little bit faint and maybe miss heard you
  15. Calm down, theno, it's not good for your alcohol intake, is it
  16. Is that Phil Spector, Hughsey? If that's the case, I reckon we'll get murdered
  17. All this means stuff all to me at the moment. Couldn't give a stuff about the Rovers........ you see, a mate of mine has just died. He, like me loved his football (he was spuds supporter) he loved to play, but five years ago he got told he had motor neurone disease. Now, for those that don't know what that is all about, your body gradually closes down, slowly. Your mind doesn't. You gradually get worse until you can't use any muscles to breath. What makes this worse is that another mate has got the same problem, but the likelyhood is that he'll go quicker. Two mates that I played footy with in recent times, we used to laugh and joke at each others teams problems.
  18. I've been thinking about replying to this thread for a while. I've seen Harry Leyland and Fred Else, I've seen Flowers and Freidel on tv. There is one thing that people have not considered, and that is the change in the laws of the game . Keepers in the 50/60's were not as agile as the modern day counterparts, their kit consisted of woollen roll neck jumpers and linen shorts, both heavy when wet When Leyland and Else were keeping, it was legitimate to tackle the keeper, it was necessary for the keeper to be of a robust stature. It was not unknown for keepers to be bundled over the line even when they had the ball in their arms. If I remember correctly Bert Trautmann had this done to him in a Cup Final in the 50/60's. The other thing that comes to mind is that keepers didn't have gloves, they also had to put up with leather balls. Now, anyone who has played with a leather ball, especially in wet weather, will understand how difficult the game can get. The ball picks up water and gets very heavy; difficult to kick and difficult to stop if hit well. (On the downside as an outfield player, if you headed the ball, you'd always want the lace and the valve to be away from your head. It would leave an imprint on your forhead.) Finally, a few years back, I went to a mates 50th birthday, to a club just south of Sydney. Pete had asked us to wear a football jersey. Of course I went in my Rovers gear. I walked through the door and this broad Lanky accent said, "I 'aven't sen one ah them fer yers" It turned out that this late70 year old was an ex Rovers player, and an ex goalie at that. His name was Wilf Billington, played in the reserves in the late 40's early 50's. A big bloke, he would have been 6 foot or so, and he still liked an ale..... So, who would I put as my preferred keeper? In the old days, it would have to be Harry, after all, any player that could get a fan club from other teams supporters had to be good. Modern times, it would have to be Brad, he's done it at all levels.
  19. vindaloo, if that happens, what's it going to be like on this board? By rights, there should be mass suicide!
