  1. - Green Zone tells a decent story and has great acting, but somehow manages to not be exciting when it should be riveting. Still really enjoyed it.

This had the potential to be a GREAT war movie, but ended up being a decent action flick. Would have liked to have seen the script with a less action oriented director.

Also saw Iron Man 2 - meets expectations in that it is an entertaining action movie, but entertaining, not great.

  2. Anyone else seen Shutter Island yet?

Thought that was brilliant, don't want to go into too much detail without ruining it for others but certainly has you guessing most of the way through just to how it's all going to link together, it's fairly obvious that everything isn't quite as it seems but it's hard to piece everything together. Definitely recommended, it's not just a good film in terms of storyline but also a great piece of film in general, Scorsese really is one of, if not the best.

Watched it three times now, so many little bits I've picked up on now and noticed that I didn't see the first time.

I watched this recently and is definitely worth checking out, I'm very into prison films and documentaries etc in general so was quite looking forward to it. A very good film but something seemed to be missing for me, couldn't quite put my finger on it, perhaps it was just because of the language and subtitles. Enjoyed it but not sure if I could sit through it again, seemed to drag a little towards the end I thought and never quite got to where I hoped it would go. I think I was hoping for more violence!

Shutter Island, excellent book by one of my favorite authors. Haven't seen the film yet, but it is on my list.

Very into prison films? Something we should know? :P

  3. Is it?

Well..... One is currently necessary albeit to feed an irresponsibly growing population whilst the other is most definitely unnecessary. It is completely and totally indefensible and is a pathetic reminder of a backward and primitive religious custom, and one which even the most fervent follower of that religion could never logically justify.

I assume you refuse to eat kosher, as well?

  4. For the London based members, had some great BBQ last night. Chicago Bar and Grill in Knightsbridge. Had been there once before, had the pulled pork and was a bit disappointed. The group I play volleyball with is very international (shocking for London), so we're starting a once a month gathering to sample restaurants/food or the different countries. There were 10 of us and everyone loved it. Ended up having the brisket which was absolutely delicious and finished with a delicious Apple Pie (which led to an argument about the phrase "American as Apple Pie" with the grandchild of Canadian apple farmers...). Most people had the ribs and loved them as well. Better than Bodeans, would probably give it about 9/10, especially with the great service we had. Only ended up being 40 quid per person with drinks, which was pretty good considering all of the food and drinks we had.

  5. It's my mothers 60th in May and she would like to go to Chinatown in Manchester for a meal with friends and family (including 1 very fussy uncle who will only eat somewhere that they do a "english" meal - i.e. no rice, no noodles Steak n' chips preferable).

Anyone have suggestions of the best place to go?

I know where you should suggest that your Uncle go if he can't suck it up for her 60th.....

  6. Sky movies is launching a christmas movies channel come december, as long as National Lampoons xmas vacation features then it's all good with me

Need Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, as well. My brothers and I used to watch them Christmas day because they took place at Christmas time (our excuse).

  7. There are a couple of clubs in Spain on this case...and they are both talking about loans.

I think Benni could go on loan because nobody is going to buy him and Sam wants him off the wages.

At the moment the word is out to find two possible new strikers for January. Probably loans too. Somebody has to leave to pay for that.

PS. There is no way in the world that he is going to Portsmouth, by the way.

Not to shoot the messenger, but if Dunn has to be part of a 5 man midfield and our strikers aren't playing much as it is, why would we need 2 more?

We need to go to a diamond to better suit Dunn and give him 2 strikers to create chances for, keeping Nzonzi at the back to protect the defense.

  8. My boss is a huge fan of Wagamama, I could take it or leave it.

While up there this weekend, I had a below average meal at the Britannia - shrimp appetizer was pretty good, fish and chips was passable, but the mushy peas were cold.

Then had a really good Sunday roast at Three Fishes.

  9. Not sure if it's allowed, but reading a book by Burnley raised Stephen Booth right now. Takes place in the Peak District.

So far it's pretty good, but he's a bit too descriptive for my usual tastes (I tend to like authors like Ian Rankin who has given me a vision of what DI Rebus should look like without ever having described him). Really good story, though.

  10. You liked Die Hard 2 better? I'm amazed at that - great film but the weakest of the 4 in my opinion.

Ditto, I went out and found the "Quadrilogy" box set a while back, great purchase.

I'm very surprised at this, Die Hard 3 is my favourite. Its just an excellent twist and Irons is good as Gruber's brother. Not as good as Hans, but Samuel L Jackson makes up for that. The opening "game" he has McClane play is real jaw-dropping stuff when the camera pans out and you see what he's wearing.

    Good trivia!

Get out. Anything with Bruce Willis in is awesome. Including Hudson Hawk.

Get a life cadet boy, its Die Hard!!

For the MMA/UFC fans amongst us, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has been cast to play B.A. Very charismatic guy who could just pull it off.

I waited until the 4th movie came out to get the box set. I do like 2 better than all but the first - thought 3 and 4 both dragged on about 15-20 minutes too long.

Do agree about Hudson Hawk - thought it was a good movie with weird humor that I like. Plus, any movie with David Caruso!

  11. Think I mentioned it before, but have been getting a bunch of books through readitswapit.co.uk, where all you have to do is pay the postage to send one of your books that you don't want to read anymore to get back another.

So far have done a couple dozen and haven't had an issue.

The best of the bunch is The Wrong Kind of Blood by Declan Hughes. It's a Dublin based mystery where the protagonist is an ex-pat who goes back home from the US for his mother's funeral. One of the best mysteries I've read this side of Dennis Lehane (wrote Mystic River which Clint Eastwood made a movie of.

  12. Hans Gruber was great I just can't get over him being in the top 20 FFS. I know I sound like I am getting worked up over this a little too much but it just annoys me when fanboys flood the voting on these kinds of things.

He definitely made that movie stand out from all of the pretenders that followed.

    "I'm an EXCEPTIONAL thief."

Good luck. I really didn't get the overall interest in that film. I love Pixar but turned this one off after 20 minutes of nothing. I even got the blu-ray free with my player and it hasn't been out of the shrink wrap. Only kept it as I thought my daughter may enjoy it when shes old enough.

Can I tick it off my list as "tried to watch"?

Thought Wall-E was brilliant. One of the top movies of this decade, IMHO.

  13. American - Any reviews on this - I fancy some BBQ

Just got back from the Tower Hill branch.

Started with the Nacho platter and the cheese was underheated and the salsa was average at best (not shocking for salsa in Europe).

The Mrs had the hot dog which was good, but not hard to do. I had the burnt ends and pulled pork combo. REALLY good BBQ sauce with the burnt ends and the pulled pork was good, not too dry. Both meals came with chips (closer to fries, though) that seemed a bit cold. Going to try the Clapham North one to see if they have a better chef, but like I said, the BBQ was good.
