I caught the Charlton v Pompey game on Sky yesterday evening.

Patrick Bauer, Charltons captain at centre back who we were heavily linked with in summer was excellent. Won EVERYTHING in the air, blocked everything, dragged the rest of the Charlton side in to position at set pieces and looked very confident in possession. They don’t call him Big Effin German for nothing - the bloke is exactly the type we need.

I’d also want to bring in another centre back with lots of experience at this level or above as well as him, but Bauer alone would surely be a huge upgrade on each of Rodwell and Mulgrew.

Bauer probably wouldnt come if Charlton are promoted and anyway we might be swapping leagues the way things are going right now.

    Wholesale changes needed.

Brereton, Magloire, Rothwell and Travis in

    Chapman on the bench

Brereton in for who? Graham? Nothing to suggest that would be anything other than a massive step backwards. Magloire is untried and gave away a goal on his last U23 appearance. The other two changes are obvious so don't expect Mowbray to make them.

  3. Time to resurrect the relegation thread after (another) disastrous weekend. Currently Rovers have the worst results over the last 6 matches of any team in the 4 divisions. Reading and Rotherham - between them - have lost only once. Apart from the New Year blip of 4 wins this losing habit stretches back for 3 months now. On current form and with non-league standard defending there are probably just 3 matches that offer a realistic prospect of picking up any further points - the home fixtures v Wigan, Bolton and Swansea (and last match nerves might screw that up too). If both Reading or Rotherham win 3 (out of 11) and draw 3 each then more points will be required - where from - and recent form suggests they may well do just that. Mowbray needs to stop chuntering on about next season and do the job he's paid to for this season.

The problem, as has always been the case under Venky's, is that the manager has too much responsibility. He has to not only select and manage the team, but also the scouting, the youth system, the transfer activity, the club christmas do... it's too much. I'm not entirely sure what Waggott does in his role, but somebody should have been questioning TM about his apparent lack of interest in recruiting in the January window whilst allowing Downing to head out on loan. Surely somebody in a position above Mowbray should have said "look, it's nice that you're trying to run a tight ship here - but we've only conceded less than Ipswich and Rotherham, and we've just let a centre back go out on loan despite our other options being injury prone and questionable in terms of their abilities. Why are we not looking to strengthen what is clearly a weak defence? What are your plans to shore the back line up if not through bringing in better players?"

Instead the manager seemingly answers to nobody, until Venky's randomly decide they don't like the way the wind is blowing this month or the meet a new "adviser" and suddenly the manager is out on his arse and the club is thrown into chaos again. The club isn't right at the very top and that's where our problems stem from.

Mowbray is allowed to mark his own work . Not good or right.

Can someone explain why Graham looks knackered, has he some serious long-term physical condition?

Players who can only perform half a season are NO good to us.

I suspect, admittedly without any evidence, that like a lot of older, high-mileage and heavily-built strikers he has a chronic back or hip condition

The win against Leeds was the high point of our season, since then our form has been that of a side battling relegation. 22 points from our last 20 games is no way near good enough. Start of the season we had the confidence from last season and sides hadn't had chance to work us out. More recently though the momentum from last season has gone and sides have worked out our strengths and the manager has been unable to find another way for us to play. We are becoming a very easy and predictable side to play against.

That sums it pretty well. Very ominous for next season as teams on the slide in the second half of the previous season are prime candidates for relegation.

Of course we need to stick with TM, as despite his flailings, you have to say we have progressed season on season with him in charge. Relegated on a record points haul by GD with his points per game average putting us midtable, so that relegation was not down to him. We then bounced straight back up and are now consolodating with a probably midtable finish.

Progress each season. That said, I can see why some might not see him as being able to take us to the next level which is to challenge in the top half and potentially break into the top six. He deserves the chance though and unless we really start going backwards he should be in charge.

Mowbrays managerial record shows that his teams results go into freefall after a couple og seasons and he doesnt know how to stop it.

I dont think I have ever witnessed a Rovers manager make 3 subs at once in my life (granted the 3 subs rule has not been in long)

To me it proved the manager select the wrong tea m, again !!!

Now , I think he is ' losing the plot ' danger is when will our owners realize ? and who will be his replacement ??

The defence is a complete joke , it is non existent , call me old fashioned but defenders are there to stop the  opponents scoring ,,

    Brannagan , Keeley , Fazackerley , Rathbone

AS hard as nails all of them !!

Bennett, Rodwell,Mulgrew, Bell/Williams all as soft as putty

I would disagree about Rodwell.  I thought he was equally as inept as Mulgrew.  Not only that, it was a petulant foul that got him booked.  He looked very frustrated and could easily have got himself sent off.  History tells us he's not a man to have in the trenches.

He's gradually writing himself out of a new contract here. If as he's proving he can't be trusted at CB then there's no point wasting high wages on a half-hearted injury waiting to happen in Cm.

  10. Can anyone explain what qualities Brereton has got . As I've seen it

    No pace

    Weak and timid

Poor first touch (And usually second too)

    Very average work rate

    Wins little in the air

Can't hold the ball up front

Lacks awareness of play around him

Lacks composure in front of goal

Apart from the above all good?
