  1. Trying the Black Bull in Rimington tomorrow night.
  2. he isn't scared to speak his mind either by the looks of the telling off he gave Dunn when he left him exposed just before the end of normal time. I'd said to my son who was attending his first match in a while that I thought Kane was improving match on match and I thought he was very good again tonight. Williamson and Jones probably had MOTM between them but Kane must have run them close. He just has bags of energy too and isn't afraid to get forward because he has the pace and determination to get back too.
  3. Went to the Horse and Jockey in Chorlton yesterday. Table for 7 booked at 4.30. food served till 6 supposedly. They had already run out of one of only 4 starters. We ordered the roast beef - none left. OK we'll have roast chicken No problem. 5 mins later there's none left - would we change our order again. We do. It comes. It's wrong. My husband has to wait while the rest of us start to see if they have enough roast lamb for him - they scrape up just enough. then the waiter appears with the dessert menus, gives them out to all 7 of us, then says "Sorry but we only have baked bananas, cheese or icecream. would you like coffees? We decline and ask for the bill. They've added 10% service to the bill - not mentioned anywhere in the pub, although we do know it's often standard for groups of over 6 (why, since those groups are usually spending fairly highly anyway and if in celebratory mood will willingly leave a tip) Daughter pays and simply says We're not paying that. Went to Tesco and bought desserts for a fraction of the price to eat at home. Needless to say - won't be going back
  4. Had a very good meal in pleasant surroundings at the Pendle Inn Barley last night. Journey home not so pleasant and probably shouldn't have gone with hindsight, but there has been almost no snow here in Clitheroe and whilst we envisaged it being tricky, little did we realise it would actually start snowing in Barley as we arrived and not let up.
  5. First thing she said when she told us about him was "There are 2 drawbacks, mum. One he's an only child and two he's a Burnley fan" Nearly 4 years now so I don't think she's going to ditch him. Meal was decent as usual
  6. We're off to the Calf's Head later with the Burnley supporting soon to be in-laws. Should be fun
  7. Could never visit a restaurant that doesn't let you take photos of the food! My daughter always wants to see what we've had to eat and so we take photos everywhere.
  8. i saw Accrington Pals too. It's meant to be dreary but I find it forgets the fact that even in the worst of circumstances you can still have a laugh. Wasn't the best show this season at the Exchange. Orpheus descending was the outstanding production of this season's 4. Do we have a theatre review thread?
  9. Speak for yourself Gordon - I've been to more places since i turned 50 than I had in the decade before, largely since I had no money because of the 4 kids. A health scare made me realise that, what the heck, I'd better get on with things. I've run 5k, further than ever in my life before, visited cities I'd wanted to see for a long time, I was in London at the weekend for a West End show, am off to France tomorrow for a bit of chateau style pampering and am having fun. Life may not begin at 50 but it certainly isn't even beginning to end.
  10. Funnily enough unless we eat at the station or Maxwell's we usually go out of clitheroe. Think edisford bridge is ok nowadays. They have a. 2 course early bird offer atm Mon to Thurs but haven't tried it. It's odd that a nice place like clitheroe no longer has the restaurants it had in the days of the auctioneer and browns bistro.
  11. Live in Clitheroe and it's one place I'd never dream of eating. Overpriced for what it is.
  12. Yes, we tried booking and couldn't get a restaurant table but got one in the bar area straight away despite it being packed. think if you're booking you need to think well ahead. we've thought about the 2 starters too Gordon but then I look at the main courses and fancy lots of them too.
  13. Went to the Tempest arms at Elslack again at the weekend. Place was heaving despite it being just after Christmas a time when most pubs and restaurants are feeling the pinch. Food very good again. Learnt from last time to avoid starters and just go for mains with the option of a dessert if you're really hungry.
  14. did you really mean that or was it a typo?
  15. Depends on who you are Gordon and whether you let it be like that. We start by going to church, then sing carols at the hospital, open presents then cook and eat dinner - rarely more than we would eat on a big Sunday dinner. After that we go for a walk if it's not pouring down then either watch something we all agree on or play charades and a board game. We probably don't eat again unless you can be bothered to get yourself bread and cheese or a sandwich. We indulge in a bit more alcohol than usual as we don't usually have to drive but not to excess. Lovely day for all the family
  16. here is Clitheroe Sue's (run by bruce the chinese guy) serves v good fish and chips and is open evenings till late. Most other chippys open evenings at least some nights.
  17. To bring it back on topic. Just had a very good meal at the Pendle Inn, Barley. Went on a groupon offer but the prices were reasonable anyway and again the portions were very good. We don't normally eat out this often but at the moment I have no kitchen and microwave meals plus washing up in the bathroom is a hassle I can do without.
  18. Used to be half price! check out their Christmas menu and also the food at the Inn at the Station, where we've just eaten Sunday lunch 2 for £10. They have a nice looking christmas menu too
  19. Went to the Tempest Arms on Friday - don't go unless you are very hungry. Huge portions and very good too. Lived up to its reputation and the service was good too - not rushed but not slow either.
  20. Was at Feilden Arms on Monday. Excellent deal - starters and desserts really good, mains ok if a little disappointing, although my son did say the duck salad was excellent. At 9.95 for 3 courses and a bottle of drinkable housewine for 12 you couldn't really complain.
  21. Lucky you can see your garden. Ours is under water. Clay soil and a high water table means it floods every time we get heavy rain.
  22. Phone playing up.was about to say whalley to mitton road was flooded at several points at teatime. Whalley has flood warnings out. Our nice new school has been leaking like a sieve all day.
  23. Not as atmospheric as the stage production I saw at the Lowry a year or so ago. After a while in the film you knew when they were going to try to make you jump and I sort of got immune to it. Enjoyed it but wasn't really disturbed by it afterwards whereas in the theatre much was suggested but very little shown so the creeping horror of it was more subtle but longer lasting.
  24. I went to see it and found it really well done but so cold and miserable. I know it was meant to be an externalisation of the guy's depression but most depressives I've come across have good days and bad days - here there were no good bits even. Enjoyed it all the same but found it weird that i enjoyed it.
