  1. That's the thing with keepers, consistency, basics, minimise mistakes and that's worth more points per season than anything. Don't get me wrong it's great when they claw one out of the top corner late in a match to hang on to a lead or draw but not so great when you can directly point the finger at them costing you 7 or 10 points per season. At the moment Raya falls into that category for me he basically balances himself out so there's a lot of room for improvement. Definitely needs a commanding presence in front of him running the defence though then some understanding can develop, that isn't Rodwell. Steele was similar although by the end he was terrible I think Raya will turn out better overall, Jake Keane had blinders & stinkers in equal measure but Robbo although he had weaknesses and was past his best was pretty good at the basics week in week out. It's back to the Mulgrew scenario really where one positive cancels out a negative but on balance which one wins in the end over a season, I feel similar about the likes of Rodwell.
  2. That's because he's been in the job a long time and by now he's cottoned on at Rovers if you tell fans what you think they want to hear they jump through hoops. If you don't carry in through whether you meant to or not it's fine because the general feeling will be blame the owners. They are thousands of miles away and won't hear it and don't give a toss anyway so you are able to just plod on.
  3. No but it will be if we start the season with no good back up to Raya, who else's fault would it be ? The fans..?
  4. Well knowing Mowbray we'll find out I wouldn't be surprised if he either tries to build the side around him or just alters the system to shoehorn him in. Did similar with Whittingham at first before the penny dropped so i'm expecting something similar given what they are likely to be paying the guy.
  5. Aye there was paper talk probably from you know who working for his buddies but 5m rated was the figure although I forget who the supposed interest was from.
  6. Oh jhc not another who's a jack of all trades master of non you could describe Jason Lowe like him and remember when they were linking him with 5 mill moves... No thanks lets just get a proper centre half in not spunk 3 mill on another just because he has NE connections.
  7. That was one of the good things about Hanley he stared people out although usually when it was HIS fault ? Always got the impression Steele was terrified of him as were one or two others so not sure how Raya would cope but the back line communication or lack of was awful under Bowyer and I don't think it's any better now. Too many nice guys not prepared to take responsibility, Lenihen aside.
  8. We keep saying that but Mulgrew, Evans, Graham, Conway (last season), more than enough experience and the likes of Williams and even Dack, masses of games under their belts at lower level. I wouldn't be averse to Morrison the player coming in as well but like Downing it ends up being about what context they are delivered in. Funds used for them instead of defenders or another striker then no, not happy. As part of a glut of signings including a good proven centre defender at this level and maybe a loan striker then yes bring it on the squad would be a lot stronger after that.
  9. Yeah a player I like i'd have taken him before Downing to be honest as the older head on big wages.
  10. Why keep trotting this line about Mulgrew ? For the umpteenth time he doesn't want to play there for a start he's said so himself and no way will Mowbray try and make him. Then factor in he's just signing Downing and the glut of defensive mids we have it really isn't happening, not that it would work anyway. As for the first bit I don't see many questioning all the old honour. integrity carbuncle that gets dragged up every time he gets a bit of flak. It's a transfer window people are discussing why it appears the needs of the team are yet AGAIN not being addressed. His record in that area is pretty average so far and he has form for dallying around almost avoiding sorting out key areas in favour of overstocking others. If supporters can't give constructive criticism of that then what are they supposed to discuss at this time of year ?
  11. The attraction of Rodwell will be the multi position thing that's why they seem to be being weak yet again and letting a player dictate. He can do two jobs average to poor with the odd blinder chucked in so he's a Mowbray man. I've no faith whatsoever we'll get any good defenders in TM will be keeping his faith in the same again so he'll see Rodwell as important in that regard then he can scrabble about for a cheapo 5th choice. If Boro/Coventry or West Brom were releasing a 35 year old lump he'd be here now and probably jump ahead of everyone else, Rodders would be history.
  12. Opinions vary on Hanley and I was never a huge fan more about how is attitude often came across but maybe he's grown up a bit now. He definitely had enough about him player wise to be a top end championship defender at least though and we can argue is he better than what we have but what he most surely brings is something a bit different, something that has been missing. As for Payne, wtf is the point in that are we back to what I've long suspected and just turning to certain people to bring players in if the managers black book runs dry or sharing out the favours ? Get a grip Rovers for gods sake give us a decent signing that doesn't have a thousand question marks around it for once. Remember Bradley Dack ???? That kind of thing........
  13. Although it would be a classic Mowbray signing i'm not sure Hanley will end up back here it's probably just a good name to link to Rovers at this moment. Wasn't it started by Patrick Thistle in his red top rag ? It'll just mean one of his pals wants to get Hanley on the move somewhere.
  14. Which he's perfectly entitled to do as a player like him is probably worth between 1 and 2 million min in todays daft market so our lot knew he was going to be free hence why they were interested but wouldn't pay for him in the first place. They also know very well how it works and that in all likelihood his agent would want similar to his value in wages spread over his contract it is the norm.
  15. Too much sense in this post and well put across.
  16. He would've sparked a big debate had he signed but I think most would have thought him a decent edition to the squad and plenty expected him to be first through the door and seemed happy about that including the managers main tub thumpers. End of the day though it comes down to Tony Mowbrays judgement and he's judged a player to be good enough to bid for twice and retain a serious interest in for over 12 months then let it go. He's also judged to chase another from his hometown club and put the funds and effort into signing him ( instead ? ) so it's his call just like the Brereton one was last summer and all that has cost/is going to cost. I'd say it's his head on the block except I doubt it is. He seems to have carte blanche, not with the cheque book but in terms of what he does at the club and who comes and goes and where we are going i'e somewhere between 15th and 12th by next May but a team worth more than it is now, that's the plan in my mind. We know what'll then start following that.......... 3 hefty good pedigree signings would prove me wrong even if they were on loan although 3 million quid in wages will easily be recouped from sales anyway but it would show some real bloody ambition and give us a real shout at the top 6 on top of what we have.
  17. Like one or two others he disappeared or stood hands on hips when things weren't going well but looked a cut above occasionally when they were. There's about 3 who do that regularly it's up to the rest of the team to carry them week in week out rather than them leading by example and we can't carry many luxury players. What would the wages of him, Mulgrew, Evans and now Downing add up to each week over a season ?
  18. Some appear to be the gaffers personal spokesperson and even they were expecting Bauer through the door but have now changed tack, y'know them types who only pop up at transfer time.....
  19. Spot on the main thing you gather from it all is that as far as the beginning of the season goes he's keeping faith again and keeping his pecking order again. We had a good start to last season when they were all fresh after summer and had the promotion bounce but the glaring porus defence was well in evidence right from the off because basically some of them struggle with Championship level football week in week out. Changing the defence about wily nily regularly looking for a formula never has the desired effect you don't need to have been a manager 20 years to realise that but being a professional centre half you should actually know how to put solid foundations in place and spot a mile off those who flatter to deceive.
  20. Some good might come out of missing Bauer as with the egg it should have left on his chin Mowbray might now be double determined to get someone decent in and prove it ok to let that one slide.
  21. Funnily enough the Warhorse on Buckshaw, The Ley Inn in C-L-W, Dantes on Preston Road and several Preston nightclubs have all been reported as getting similar banners ready...
  22. I'm still believing what I heard that they put in the graft to get him whilst Rovers just remained 'interested'. Not sure i'd have been impressed if we had to offer about ten grand per week more just to lure him here instead of Preston that doesn't bode well. However neither does TMs pork pies about 50k pwk !!! Most worrying thing is it sounding like he was told he'd be coming in as back up not to earn a place in the team from the off like he'll get the chance to do at PNE. Verdict - They've tried to do it cheaply a few times because they are only interested yet again in back ups and back ups for back ups because he has his favs already to keep faith in again. Somewhere along the line they've lost interest because he's got side tracked with chasing/funding the Downing 'capture'. Worry not though defenders are coming.....
  23. He was to any young player who thought he could make a career on the ability to run around a lot. If Rodwell had Jlowes engine or Jlowe had Rodwells touch....they still wouldn't be much good. Let's just have a proper midfielder instead.
  24. How many twenty grand per week player coaches do we need for these kids ? They'll all have one each at this rate although i'm not sure what a half arsed attitude actually contributes in terms of influence or role model ! Lets just get the best first 11 we can possibly get, cut away chaff and put the money to better use and go from there instead of telling players they can stay if they want or go if they want we aren't really arsed but we'll pay you all the same.
